The Effect of Trade Integration on Business Cycle Synchronization in East Asia

NGUYEN, Vinh Thi Hong,HOANG, Thuy Thi Thanh,NGUYEN, Sang Minh Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.8

The paper aims to investigate the impact of trade integration on business cycle synchronization for the East Asian countries during 2005- 2017 based on the endogeneity hypothesis of Optimum Currency Area criteria. We test the determinants of business cycles by calculating bilateral trade, financial integration, and business cycle synchronization. Applying the system Generalized Method of Moments for dynamic panel data models, the results show that business cycle synchronization is highly associated with trade and financial integration. These findings confirm the endogeneity hypothesis that more trade integration will mitigate asymmetric shocks, and have a positive impact on the business cycle synchronization. The increased trade intensity and financial linkage lead to more correlated business cycles in East Asia. Apart from trade and financial integration, the trade structure differential, monetary policy similarity also influence the business cycle comovement. The significantly negative impact of trade structure differential on business cycle synchronization suggests that countries with less similar structures are more likely to undergo asymmetric shocks. The results also indicate that monetary policy matters for output comovement. This study recommends that the East Asian countries should focus on bilateral trade as well as financial integration with each other to reap benefits from the integration process.

Carbon coated MFe2O4 (M=Fe, Co, Ni) magnetite nanoparticles: A smart adsorbent for direct yellow and moderacid red dyes

Hoang Vinh Tran,Hai Van Nguyen,Doanh Viet Vu,Thu Dieu Le,Binh Thanh Nguyen,Dang Hai Le 한국화학공학회 2022 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.39 No.2

We report here a simple approach for synthesis of carbon coated magnetite (C@MFe2O4, M=Co, Ni, Fe) with shell@core nanostructured composites that we used as magnetic-nanosorbents for direct yellow (DYG) and moderacid red (RS) as pollutant textile dyes removal via an adsorption process. The synthesized C@MFe2O4 was characterized by TEM, SEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR and VSM techniques. TEM results indicated that C@MFe2O4 nanocomposites have 20-30 nm of MFe2O4 nanoparticle core and 2-3 nm in thickness of the amorphous carbon shell. The synthesized C@MFe2O4 nanocomposites have the zero point charge (pHZPC) at 5.5, which suggests that DYG and RS, anionic dyes can be adsorbed onto the C@MFe2O4 nanosorbents in the acidic medium. Adsorption of DYG and RS onto magnetic nanosorbents was optimized and adsorption thermodynamic parameters were evaluated, clearly indicating that the adsorption of RS onto synthesized magnetic-nanosorbents was facile more than that DYG. The adsorption isotherm data showed that the adsorption processes of DYG and RS onto Fe3O4 or C@MFe2O4 nanosorbents are more suitable for the Langmuir model than Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of DYG dye onto Fe3O4, C@Fe3O4 and C@CoFe2O4 adsorbents was 14.641, 36.232 and 7.85mg g1, respectively; meanwhile, these values were 41.152, 61.728 and 39.683mg g1 for RS dye. These obtained data indicate that the developed Fe3O4, C@Fe3O4 and C@CoFe2O4 nanoparticles can be used as recoverable and recyclable adsorbents for not only organic pigments adsorption but also for heavy metal ion removal or protein extraction as well.

Effects of Foreign Direct Investment and Human Capital on Labour Productivity: Evidence from Vietnam

Nguyen Hoang LE,Luong Vinh Quoc DUY,Bui Hoang NGOC 한국유통과학회 2019 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.6 No.3

The paper aims to investigate whether foreign direct investment (FDI) has positive effect on the labour productivity in Vietnam. Labour productivity is the elemental determinant of a country’s development level in long-term. In recent years, although increasing consistently, labour productivity of Vietnam remains low in comparison to other South East Asian countries. To identify the direction of effect and the level of effect of FDI and human capital on the labour productivity of Vietnam, Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model was used to examine the effect of FDI and human capital on labour productivity in Vietnam from 1986 to 2014. The results of bounds test confirm the existence of cointegration among the variables. Further, the Toda and Yamamoto Granger causality test affirms that there is unidirectional causality running from foreign direct investment and human capital index to labour productivity. The empirical results provide strong statistical evidence that foreign direct investment and human capital has a positive impact on labour productivity in Vietnam in long-term. These findings imply that workers are expected to further improve their knowledge, skills and that policy-maker should establish concrete plans to increase human capital. Results from this study provide suggestion necessary for Vietnam to achieve sustainable development.

      • A study on forecasting model of container cargo throughput of Vietnam's seaport

Tan Vinh Nguyen,Hoang Phuong Nguyen 국제이네비해양경제학회 2020 International Journal of e-Navigation and Maritime Vol.14 No.1

Seaports play a huge role in Vietnam's economy, being a border gate for economic and cultural exchanges with outsiders, especially the role of goods circulation. Container cargoes are one of the types of goods with large and increasing volume through Vietnam seaports. However, the heterogeneity between the seaport and the connected infrastructure greatly affects the capacity and efficiency of port investment. This is also one of the main causes leading to a shortage of goods, excess ports in some port areas. The root cause is that the planning has not kept up with the growth of the amount of goods arriving at the port, because the issue of forecasting the volume of goods through the port is not accurate. Therefore, it is necessary to develop models of forecasting container cargo through the ports with general, scientific, and high accuracy to serve the strategy, planning and development of seaport system; the work of planning and investment in the development of seaports, shipping fleets and other auxiliary transport infrastructure works. The purpose of this study is to build suitable forecasting models with high accuracy and reliability on the total volume of container cargo throughput of the Vietnamese seaport system. Based on the methods of a statistical survey, synthesis, regression analysis, and correlation to evaluate the influence of factors on container cargo volume through Vietnam's seaports in the period of 2004-2019. By incorporating more economic factors into the regression model, the paper focuses on forecasting container cargo through the Vietnamese seaport systems, going into cargo-based forecasting in tons and TEUs. The results of this study contribute to complete the rationale for forecasting, especially forecasts related to the shipping industry and the forecast for container cargo throughput of the seaport. Finally, selecting models for forecasting container cargo volume throughput of seaports by Vietnamese conditions.

The Impact of Global Uncertainty Shocks on Macroeconomics: The Case of Vietnam

Ha Hong TRAN(Ha Hong TRAN ),Vinh Thi Hong NGUYEN(Vinh Thi Hong NGUYEN ),Nam Hoang TRINH(Nam Hoang TRINH ) 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.9

The global financial crisis of 2008–2009 and the COVID-19 pandemic that started in 2019 along with the slow and unstable recovery of the global economy have raised concerns about the impact of global uncertainty on the macroeconomics of the countries. The paper used the Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) model to examine the impact of global uncertainty shocks on Vietnam’s economy from the period 2008–2022. We found that Vietnam’s output dropped following the shock of global uncertainty, the peak was in the third month, and lasted for one year. Inflation in Vietnam had a rapid downturn in the first month, peaked in the seventh month, and took a long time to cease. When the economy experienced the shock of increased global uncertainty, Vietnam’s policy interest rate was adjusted downward. Additionally, we included a long-term interest rate to consider the overall impact of monetary policy into account. A decreasing trend was also found with this rate. The global uncertainty shock effects acted as the aggregate demand shocks, reducing output and inflation as the uncertainty increases and vice versa, thus monetary policy can be used to regulate Vietnam’s economy to deal with negative shocks without the trade-offs between output and inflation as aggregate supply shocks.

Impact of long COVID-19 on posttraumatic stress disorder as modified by health literacy: an observational study in Vietnam

        Han Thi Vo,Tien Duc Dao,Tuyen Van Duong,Tan Thanh Nguyen,Binh Nhu Do,Tinh Xuan Do,Khue Minh Pham,Vinh Hai Vu,Linh Van Pham,Lien Thi Hong Nguyen,Lan Thi Huong Le,Hoang Cong Nguyen,Nga Hoang Dang,Trung 질병관리청 2024 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.15 No.1

Objectives: The incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has increased, particularly among individuals who have recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Health literacy is considered a “social vaccine” that helps people respond effectively to the pandemic. We aimed to investigate the association between long COVID-19 and PTSD, and to examine the modifying role of health literacy in this association. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at 18 hospitals and health centers in Vietnam from December 2021 to October 2022. We recruited 4,463 individuals who had recovered from COVID-19 infection for at least 4 weeks. Participants provided information about their sociodemographics, clinical parameters, health-related behaviors, health literacy (using the 12-item short-form health literacy scale), long COVID-19 symptoms and PTSD (Impact Event Scale-Revised score of 33 or higher). Logistic regression models were used to examine associations and interactions. Results: Out of the study sample, 55.9% had long COVID-19 symptoms, and 49.6% had PTSD. Individuals with long COVID-19 symptoms had a higher likelihood of PTSD (odds ratio [OR], 1.68; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.63–2.12; p<0.001). Higher health literacy was associated with a lower likelihood of PTSD (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.97–0.99; p=0.001). Compared to those with long COVID-19 symptoms and the lowest health literacy score, those with long COVID-19 symptoms and a 1-point health literacy increment had a 3% lower likelihood of PTSD (OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.96–0.99; p=0.001).Conclusion: Health literacy was found to be a protective factor against PTSD and modified the negative impact of long COVID-19 symptoms on PTSD.

An improvement of real-time polymerase chain reaction system based on probe modification is required for accurate detection of African swine fever virus in clinical samples in Vietnam

        Tran Ha Thi Thanh,Dang Anh Kieu,Ly Duc Viet,Vu Hao Thi,Hoang Tuan Van,Nguyen Chinh Thi,Chu Nhu Thi,Nguyen Vinh The,Nguyen Huyen Thi,Truong Anh Duc,Pham Ngoc Thi,Dang Hoang Vu 아세아·태평양축산학회 2020 Animal Bioscience Vol.33 No.10

Objective: The rapid and reliable detection of the African swine fever virus (ASFV) plays an important role in emergency control and preventive measures of ASF. Some methods have been recommended by FAO/OIE to detect ASFV in clinical samples, including real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). However, mismatches in primer and probe binding regions may cause a false-negative result. Here, a slight modification in probe sequence has been conducted to improve the qualification of real-time PCR based on World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) protocol for accurate detection of ASFV in field samples in Vietnam. Methods: Seven positive confirmed samples (four samples have no mismatch, and three samples contained one mutation in probe binding sites) were used to establish novel real-time PCR with slightly modified probe (Y = C or T) in comparison with original probe recommended by OIE. Results: Both real-time PCRs using the OIE-recommended probe and novel modified probe can detect ASFV in clinical samples without mismatch in probe binding site. A high correlation of cycle quantification (Cq) values was observed in which Cq values obtained from both probes arranged from 22 to 25, suggesting that modified probe sequence does not impede the qualification of real-time PCR to detect ASFV in clinical samples. However, the samples with one mutation in probe binding sites were ASFV negative with OIE recommended probe but positive with our modified probe (Cq value ranked between 33.12-35.78). Conclusion: We demonstrated for the first time that a mismatch in probe binding regions caused a false negative result by OIE recommended real-time PCR, and a slightly modified probe is required to enhance the sensitivity and obtain an ASF accurate diagnosis in field samples in Vietnam.

The potential efficacy of the E2-subunit vaccine to protect pigs against different genotypes of classical swine fever virus circulating in Vietnam

        Ha Thi Thanh Tran,Duc Anh Truong,Viet Duc Ly,Hao Thi Vu,Tuan Van Hoang,Chinh Thi Nguyen,Nhu Thi Chu,Vinh The Nguyen,Duyen Thuy Nguyen,Kohtaroh Miyazawa,Takehiro Kokuho,Hoang Vu Dang 대한백신학회 2020 Clinical and Experimental Vaccine Research Vol.9 No.1

Purpose: To date, many kinds of classical swine fever (CSF) vaccines have been developed to protect against this disease. However, the efficacy of these vaccines to protect the pig against field CSF strains needs to be considered, based on circulating strains of classical swine fever virus (CSFV). Materials and Methods: Recombinant E2-CSFV protein produced by baculovirus/insect cell system was analyzed by western blots and immunoperoxidase monolayer assay. The effect of CSFV-E2 subunit vaccines was evaluated in experimental pigs with three genotypes of CSFV challenge. Anti-E2 specific and neutralizing antibodies in experimental pigs were analyzed by blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and neutralization peroxidize-linked assay. Results: The data showed that CSFV VN91-E2 subunit vaccine provided clinical protection in pigs against three different genotypes of CSFV without noticeable clinical signs, symptoms, and mortality. In addition, no CSFV was isolated from the spleen of the vaccinated pigs. However, the unvaccinated pigs exhibited high clinical scores and the successful virus isolation from spleen. These results showed that the E2-specific and neutralizing antibodies induced by VN91-E2 antigen appeared at day 24 after first boost and a significant increase was observed at day 28 (p<0.01). This response reached a peak at day 35 and continued until day 63 when compared to controls. Importantly, VN91-E2 induced E2-specific and neutralizing antibodies protected experimental pigs against high virulence of CSFVs circulating in Vietnam, including genotype 1.1, 2.1, and 2.2. Conclusion: These findings also suggested that CSFV VN91-E2 subunit vaccine could be a promising vaccine candidate for the control and prevention of CSFV in Vietnam.

      • Spinning Dust Emission from Circumstellar Disks and Its Role In Excess Microwave Emission

        Hoang, Thiem,Lan, Nguyen-Quynh,Vinh, Nguyen-Anh,Kim, Yun-Jeong American Astronomical Society 2018 The Astrophysical journal Vol.862 No.2

Electric dipole emission from rapidly spinning polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is widely believed to be an origin of anomalous microwave emission (AME), but recently it has encountered a setback owing to the noncorrelation of AME with PAH abundance seen in a full-sky analysis. Microwave observations for specific regions with well-constrained PAH features would be crucial to test the spinning dust hypothesis. In this paper, we present physical modeling of microwave emission from spinning PAHs from protoplanetary disks (PPDs) around Herbig Ae/Be stars and T Tauri stars where PAH features are well observed. Guided by the presence of 10 mu m silicate features in some PPDs, we also model microwave emission from spinning nanosilicates. Thermal emission from big dust grains is computed using the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code (RADMC-3D). Our numerical results demonstrate that microwave emission from either spinning PAHs or spinning nanosilicates dominates over thermal dust at frequencies nu < 60 GHz, even in the presence of significant grain growth. Finally, we attempt to fit millimeter-centimeter observational data with both thermal dust and spinning dust for several disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars that exhibit PAH features and find that spinning dust can successfully reproduce the observed excess microwave emission (EME). Future radio observations with ngVLA, SKA, and ALMA Band 1 would be valuable for elucidating the origin of EME and potentially open a new window for probing nanoparticles in circumstellar disks.
