Modification of Ergun equation for application in trickle bed reactors randomly packed with trilobe particles using computational fluid dynamics technique

Mahmood Bazmi,Seyed Hassan Hashemabadi,Mahmood Bayat 한국화학공학회 2011 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.28 No.6

Based on a slit model, a pellet scale model has been developed for calculation of drag force imposed on trilobe catalyst particles in a packed bed reactor. The drag coefficient for single gas phase flow in a porous media has been calculated by CFD simulation and the results compared to the Ergun equation. The results show that the drag coefficient predicted by Ergun equation should be modified for various bed porosities, particle aspect ratio and gas densities. Therefore, a correction factor has been proposed to correct the Ergun equation constants in various conditions for trilobe particles. Comparison between the proposed corrected Ergun equation results and experimental data indicates considerable agreement.

The study of electronic, elastic, magnetic and optical response of Zn1-xTixY (Y=S, Se) through mBJ potential

        Q. Mahmood,M. Hassan,M.A. Faridi,B. Sabir,G. Murtaza,Asif Mahmood 한국물리학회 2016 Current Applied Physics Vol.16 No.5

To explore the structural, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of Zn1-xTixY (Y=S, Se) alloys, in the composition range 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, we have applied full-potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital (FP-LAPW + lo) scheme, which is based on the density functional theory (DFT). Structural optimizations have been done in ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase by using Wu eCohen generalized gradient approximation (WC-GGA), whereas recently developed modified Becke and Johnson (mBJ) potential was employed to study electronic and optical properties. The lower value of ground state energy and negative enthalpy of formation confirm stability in the FM phase. Due to the spin polarization of electrons in the Ti-d orbital, origin of half-metallic ferromagnetism has been expressed by the calculated band structures, electronic density of states (DOS) and magnetic moments. We also have calculated the exchange splitting energy Dx (d), crystal field energy (DEcrystal = Et2g Eeg) and exchange constants (N0a and N0b). The negative value of exchange constant (N0b) and large splitting of 3d-states of Ti show that the down spin potential is more effective than up spin. Finally, the results of optical parameters such as complex dielectric constant ε (u), refractive index n (u), normal incident reflectivity R (u), absorption coefficient ɑ (u), optical conductivity s (u) and optical loss factor L (u) are discussed in the energy range 0e14 eV. Moreover, we have verified the Penn's model by showing the inverse relation between the static dielectric constant and the optical band gap. The direct relation between static dielectric constant and static refractive index has been observed by increasing the composition of Ti. The calculated parameters provide valuable theoretical information for optical and spintronics device applications.

DNA Binding Studies and Cytotoxicity of the Novel 1,10-phenanthroline Palladium(II) Complexes of Dithiocarbamate Derivatives

        Hassan Mansouri-Torshizi,Maryam Saeidifar,Zahra Yekke Ghasemi,Mahmood Khastan,Adeleh Divsalar,Ali Akbar Saboury 대한화학회 2011 대한화학회지 Vol.55 No.1

Two new palladium (II) complexes, [Pd (phen)(pip-dtc)]NO_3 and [Pd(phen)(mor-dtc)]NO_3, (where phen is 1,10-Phenantroline, pip-dtc is piperidinedithiocarbamate anion and mor-dtc is morpholinedithiocarbamate anion) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic studies (FT-IR, ^1 H NMR, UV-Vis) and conductance measurement. In these complexes, the dithiocarbamate ligands coordinate with Pd (II) center as bidentate with two sulfur atoms. These two complexes have been tested against chronic myelogenous leukemia cell line, K562. They show IC_(50) values less than cisplatin and thus the mode of binding of the complexes to calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were investigated by ultraviolet difference and fluorescence spectroscopy. They can denature DNA, exhibit cooperative binding and intercalate into DNA. Several binding and thermodynamic parameters are also described.

        Investigation of ferromagnetic semiconducting and opto-electronic properties of Zn1-xMnxS (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) alloys: A DFT-mBJ approach

        M. Hassan,N.A. Noor,Q. Mahmood,B. Amin 한국물리학회 2016 Current Applied Physics Vol.16 No.11

In this study, we report the mechanical, structural, electronic, magnetic and optical behaviors in Zn1-xMnxS (0 ≤ x ≤ 1), which are determined by employing Wein2K code. The ferromagnetic (FM) state stability of the Zn1-xMnxS alloys has been elucidated from the calculated values of enthalpy of formation. The elastic constant (C11, C12, C14) are calculated to find various useful mechanical parameters, which depend upon Mn concentrations. The calculated electronic band structure and density of states (DOS) have demonstrated that exchange splitting through p-d hybridization, arising due to Mn impurities, stabilize a ferromagnetic state. The exchange splitting of the bands is further elucidated from the sharing of magnetic moment, charge and spin, between the impurity cations and the host lattice anions. Various parameters like direct spin-exchange splitting Dx(d), exchange constants N0a and N0b have also confirmed a stable ferromagnetic state. Various calculated optical parameters have indicated that the studied compounds respond to visible and ultraviolet energies. Moreover, the calculated optical band gap and static dielectric constant 31 (0) verify Penn's model. The studied compounds of Zn1-xMnxS have been shown theoretically that they find potential spintronic and optical device applications.

Improved Efficacy of a Dendritic Cell-Based Vaccine against a Murine Model of Colon Cancer: The Helper Protein Effect

        Amir-Hassan Zarnani,Monireh Torabi-Rahvar,Mahmood Bozorgmehr,Mehri Zareie,Nazanin Mojtabavi 대한암학회 2015 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.47 No.3

Purpose Targeted immunotherapy using dendritic cells (DCs) has been employed in numerous investigations aiming at combating neoplasms. We previously showed that copulsing of an antigen with a helper protein could considerably enhance antigen presenting capacity of ex vivo–generated DCs. In this study, we attempted to administer an effective treatment in a murine model of colon cancer with DCs pulsed with the mixture of a tumor-specific gp70-derived peptide (AH1) and a helper protein, ovalbumin (OVA). Materials and Methods First, the presence of gp70 in CT26 tumor cells and tumor tissues was verified using immunofluorescence and Western blot analyses. Next, DCs were purified from normal mice, loaded ex vivowith AH1 and OVA (DC-Pep-OVA), and injected into tumor-bearing mice. Tumor volume, in vitro antigen (Ag)-specific proliferation of splenic cells, and survival rate were measured to determine the efficacy of DC-Pep-OVA. As the control groups, tumor-bearing mice were vaccinated with DC-Pep, unpulsed DC, and DCs loaded with a mixture of OVA and an irrelevant peptide (P15), or were not vaccinated at all. Results DC-Pep-OVA showed superior efficacy over other groups, as indicated by smaller tumor volume, higher Ag-specific proliferation rate of splenic cells, and prolonged survival. Conclusion Overall, in the present study we showed for the first time that DCs copulsed with AH1 (tumor Ag) and OVA (helper molecule) could be considered as potentially robust weapons for use in future antitumor immunotherapies.

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Persian Version of the 24-Item Early-Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire

        Esfandiari Mahmood,Babaee Taher,Kamyab Mojtaba,Kamali Mohammad,Matsumoto Hiroko,Ghandhari Hassan,Vitale Michael G. 대한척추외과학회 2022 Asian Spine Journal Vol.16 No.1

Study Design: Cross-sectional study.Purpose: To translate and culturally adapt the original English version of the 24-item Early-Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) to the Persian language as well as assess its reliability and validity.Overview of Literature: Early-onset scoliosis (EOS) patients with progressive curves require active treatments, such as serial elongation– derotation–flexion casting, bracing, and surgery, which are stressful and expensive. In order to evaluate the impact of EOS and its treatment strategies, it is important to consider the patients and their parents’ quality of life as the clinical and radiological parameters. The EOSQ-24 is a parent-based measure that evaluates the health-related quality of life of patients with EOS and their caregivers/parents. Similar to other widely used questionnaires, EOSQ-24 needs to be translated into other languages to make it usable in populations from different cultures and societies. Methods: We evaluated the translation and back translation of the EOSQ-24 and made the required revisions as per the analysis performed by the expert committee and an international guideline to adapt it for use in this study. Thereafter, we recruited 100 EOS patients in order to evaluate its reliability and validity. The reliability was assessed with internal consistency. Convergent validity was assessed by comparing the scores of the EOSQ-24 and the 22-item Scoliosis Research Society Questionnaire (SRS-22r). Finally, the known groups validity was assessed as per patient’s sex, curve magnitude, and treatment type. Results: The Persian EOSQ-24 demonstrated very good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α=0.88). All the items had an acceptable corrected item-total correlation (>0.3). Further, the EOSQ-24 and the SRS-22r scores (p <0.001) were significantly correlated. The EOSQ-24 could discriminate patients with different curve magnitudes. Conclusions: The Persian EOSQ-24 can serve as a disease-specific instrument with strong validity and reliability in the evaluation of EOS patients. Its applicability in other Persian-speaking countries and regions of the world needs to be investigated further.

The Probabilistic Stability Analysis of Saturated-Unsaturated MH and CL Soil Slope with Rainfall Infiltration

        Khalid Mahmood,Jin Man Kim,Hassan Khan,Muhammad Safdar,Usman Khan 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.22 No.5

It is well known that the slope failure in unsaturated soil is the decrease in the matric suction, when the rain water infiltrates. However, the seepage mechanism and the stability of unsaturated soil slope have not been well established in geotechnicalengineering. In this study, the suction profile and reliability index of saturated-unsaturated slope is studied at different rainfallcondition with intensity in the range of saturated hydraulic conductivity of MH and CL soil. The finite element seepage model isuncoupled with slope stability model to calculate the reliability index at different time of long duration uniform rainfall. For CL soilslope, the reliability index is slightly changed during and after rain fall infiltration. For the MH soil slope the wetting front remainsunsaturated up to a certain time of rainfall infiltration. After this time, the infiltrated rainfall reaches the ground water table andelevates it. The reliability index of the soil slope is thus reduced.

Income-related inequality in completed suicide across the provinces of Iran

        Mohammad Hassan Kazemi-Galougahi,Asieh Mansouri,Samaneh Akbarpour,Mahmood Bakhtiyari,Majid Sartipi,Rahmatollah Moradzadeh 한국역학회 2018 Epidemiology and Health Vol.40 No.-

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to measure income-related inequality in completed suicide across the provinces of Iran. METHODS: This ecological study was performed using data from the Urban and Rural Household Income and Expenditure Survey-2010 conducted by the Iranian Center of Statistics, along with data on completed suicide from the Iranian Legal Medicine Organization in 2012. We calculated the Gini coefficient of per capita income and the completed suicide rate, as well as the concentration index for per capita income inequality in completed suicide, across the provinces of Iran. RESULTS: The Gini coefficients of per capita income and the completed suicide rate in the provinces of Iran were 0.10 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.06 to 0.13) and 0.34 (95% CI, 0.21 to 0.46), respectively. We found a trivial decreasing trend in the completed suicide incidence rate according to income quintile. The poorest-to-richest ratio in the completed suicide rate was 2.01 (95% CI, 1.26 to 3.22). The concentration index of completed suicide in the provinces of Iran was -0.12 (95% CI, -0.30 to 0.06). CONCLUSIONS: This study found that lower income might be considered as a risk factor for completed suicide. Nonetheless, further individual studies incorporating multivariable analysis and repeated cross-sectional data would allow a more fine-grained analysis of this phenomenon.
