To improve the luminescence characteristics of high-efficiency alternating-current plasma display panels (AC-PDPs), we developed a new hoof-type electrode structure, and we studied the spatiotemporal behavior of the density of the excited Xenon atom in the 1s5 metastable state via laser absorption spectroscopy. Using this structure, the maximum density of the excited Xenon atom per cell was improved by 2.4 times that when the conventional electrode structure was used.

<P>An electrooptic (EO) temperature sensor based on a Fabry-Pe/spl acute/rot (FP) resonator with a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) film is proposed. A novel compensation scheme of the EO effect allows for precise determination of temperature by monitoring the resonant wavelength of the NLC FP sensor. The proposed EO temperature sensor provides good stability, high resolution, self-calibration capability, and low driving voltage.</P>

<P>We proposed and analyzed an optically isotropic nano-droplet liquid crystal (LC) doped with high k nanoparticles (NPs), exhibiting enhanced Kerr effects, which could be operated with reduced driving voltages. For enhancing the contrast ratio together with the light efficiencies, the LC droplet sizes were adjusted to be shorter than the wavelength of visible light to reduce depolarization effects by optical scattering of the LC droplets. Based on the optical analysis of the depolarization effects, the influence of the relationship between the LC droplet size and the NP doping ratio on the Kerr effect change was investigated. We demonstrated the capillary force lithography (CFL) method for controlling the azimuthal anchoring energy of a liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. When a thermoplastic polymer film is heated to over the glass transition temperature, the melted polymer is filled into the mold structure by the capillary action and the aspect ratio of the pattern is determined by the dewetting time of the CFL process. Here, the proposed method showed that the azimuthal anchoring energy of the LC alignment layer could be simply controlled by the surface relief patterns which were determined by the dewetting times during the CFL patterning.

<P>We present a dynamic polarization grating based on a dye-doped liquid crystal cell that is controllable by a single pump beam in a binary homeotropic-planar configuration produced through selective rubbing. Upon single pump beam irradiation, the azo dyes in the liquid-crystal (LC) layer diffuse and adsorb onto the planar LC-anchoring surface due to trans-cis photo-isomerization. It is found that the dynamic polarization grating effect results mainly from the photo-induced easy axis reorientation by the amount of dye molecules adsorbed on the planar LC-alignment surface in a single-beam control scheme. The initial LC-anchoring conditions and the dynamic behavior of the dye adsorption strongly influence the repetitive writing-erasing processes by the single pump beam.</P>

We propose new fabrication methods of a pixel-isolated liquid crystal (LC) structure for flexible display applications. In the LC structure fabricated through the proposed method, the patterned interpixel walls for sustaining the cell thickness are supported by the solidified polymer layer through anisotropic phase separation of LC/polymer composite, causing the alignment of the LC molecules to have very good mechanical stability against external pressure. In addition, we show that such pixel-isolating walls can be made by the stamping method which can be applied to fabricate large size plastic LCDs by roll-to-roll processing.
