Background: Elevated blood pressure is a major preventable cause of cardiovascular diseases. Alcohol consumption is a well-known risk factor of elevated blood pressure. The aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) polymorphism is common in Eastern Asians, and inactive ALDH2 genotypes are associated with both avoiding alcohol consumption and aldehyde accumulation. Therefore, this study assessed the associations between alcohol consumption and hypertension and blood pressure according to the ALDH2 genotypes. Methods: This study consists of 8,526 participants in the Dong-gu Study. Multivariate logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) according to alcohol consumption after stratifying by gender and ALDH2 genotypes. Multivariate linear regression was performed to estimate the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) according to the amount of alcohol consumed. Results: In men, alcohol consumption was positively associated with both SBP and DBP in active ALDH2 carriers, but not in inactive ALDH2 carriers. In active ALDH2 carriers, compared to non-drinkers, the OR of hypertension was 1.16 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.91–1.49) for < 1 drink/day, and 1.44 (95% CI, 1.15–1.80) for ≥ 1 drink/day in men. With each 1 drink/day increase, SBP and DBP increased by 3 and 1 mmHg in men, respectively. There was no significant association between ALDH2 genotypes and hypertension and blood pressure in women. Conclusion: ALDH2 genotype modified the association between alcohol consumption and blood pressure in men. There was a positive relationship between alcohol consumption and blood pressure in active ALDH2 carriers, but no significant relationship in inactive ALDH2 carriers.

<P>Purpose To overcome the therapeutic restrictions offered by hydrophobic quercetin (Qu), this study aims to synthesize MPEG-PLA encapsulated Qu nanoparticle and to evaluate their anticancer efficacy. Materials and Methods In vitro anticancer potential and apoptotic studies were done by cell cytotoxicity assay and flow cytometry, respectively. MPEG-PLA-Qu nanoparticles were evaluated for anticancer efficacy in vivo using xenograft mice model. TUNEL assay was performed to observe the frequency of apoptotic cells in vivo. Results The hydrodynamic particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential and drug loading % of MPEG-PLA-Qu nanoparticle was 155.3 +/- 3.2 nm, 0.2 +/- 0.05, -3.14 mV and 5.3 +/- 1.1%, respectively. Also, MPEG-PLA-Qu showed sustained drug release for 10 days. In vitro results showed that MPEG-PLA-Qu could efficiently induce apoptosis in triple negative breast cancer cell line (MDA-MB-231) with higher amount of quercetin in cell lysate treated with MPEG-PLA-Qu in comparison to free quercetin. In xenograft model for breast cancer, peritumorally injected MPEG-PLA-Qu significantly inhibited the tumor growth. Moreover, TUNEL assay showed more occurrence of apoptotic cells in MPEG-PLA-Qu treated tumors compared to free quercetin at similar dose. Conclusion Our data suggest that MPEG-PLA-Qu nanoparticle can have a promising clinical potential for the treatment of breast cancer.</P>

Objectives: This study developed an information and communication technology (ICT)-based comprehensive health and social-needs assessment (CHSNA) system based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) with the aim of enhancing person-centered community care for community residents and supporting healthcare professionals and social workers who provide healthcare and social services in the community. Methods: Items related to a CHSNA tool were developed and mapped with ICF codes. Experts validated the CHSNA system design and process using the Delphi method, and a pilot test of the initial version of the system was conducted. Results: The following three steps of CHSNA were embedded in the system, which had a user-friendly screen and images: basic health assessment, life and activity assessment, and in-depth health assessment. The assessment results for the community residents were presented with visualized health profiles, including images, graphs, and an ICF model. Conclusions: The developed CHSNA system can be used by healthcare professionals, social workers, and community residents to evaluate the reasoning underlying health and social needs, to facilitate the identification of more appropriate healthcare plans, and to guide community residents to receive the best healthcare services. A CHSNA system can improve the implementation of standardized terminology utilizing the ICF and the accuracy of needs assessments of community residents.
