Bacillus thuringiensis NTB-1 isolated from soil samples in Korea produces ovoidal parasporal inclusions with proteins of approximately 24-40kDa in size. Although serological study indicated that the isolate has a flagella (H) antigen identical with subsp. israelensis, it seemed to be non-insecticidal against Lepidoptera and Coleoptera as well as Diptera. To investigate the activity of non-insecticidal B.thuringiensis transformed with insecticidal crystal protein genes, cryIVD and cytA genes of B. thuringiensis subsp. morrisoni PG-14, highly toxic to mosquito larvae, were introduced into the isolate NTB-1. The expression of mosquitocidal crystal protein genes in NTB-1 was characterized by SDS-PAGE analysis and electron microscopy. The results showed that crystalline inclusions of host, CryIVD and CytA were stably expressed in the transformant. However, the mosquitocidal activity of transformant was similar to that of B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki Cry-B harbouring cryIVD and cytA genes, demonstrating that a synergistic effect by an interaction of both introduced insecticidal and resident non-insecticidal crystal proteins was not observed.

White rot or stem rot caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is one of the most destructive fungal diseases that have become a serious threat to the successful cultivation of oilseed Brassicas. The study was designed with an aim to investigate the association between the pathogenic aggressiveness and pathogenicity determinants of this pathogen specifically in Brassica for the first time. For this, a total of 58 isolates of S. sclerotiorum from differ- ent geographical regions were collected and purified. These isolates were inoculated on a Brassica juncea cv. RL-1359 and they exhibited high level of variation in their disease progression. The isolates were grouped and then 24 isolates were selected for the biochemical analysis of pathogenicity determinants. The isolates varied significantly with respect to their total organic acids, oxalic acid production and pectin methyl esterase and polygalacturonase activity. The oxalic acid production corresponded to the disease progression of the isolates; the isolates with higher oxalic acid production were the more aggressive ones and vice-versa. This is, in our knowledge, the first study to establish a correlation between oxalic acid production and pathogenic aggressiveness of S. sclerotiorum on B. juncea. However, the pectinases’ enzyme activity did not follow the trend as of disease progression. These suggest an indispensable role of oxalic acid in pathogenicity of the fungus and the potential to be used as biochemical marker for preliminary assessment of pathogenic aggressiveness of various isolates before incorporating them in a breed- ing program.

European elderberry (Sambucus nigra), recognized in Europe for its health-promoting properties for many gen-erations, is known to contain a range of anthocyanins, flavonoids, and other polyphenolics that contribute to the high antiox-idant capacity of its berries. American elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), on the other hand, has not been cultivated, bred,and promoted as a medicinal plant like its better-characterized European counterpart. In this study, aqueous acetone extractsof the berries from these two species were fractionated and tested in a range of assays that gauge anticarcinogenic potential.Both cultivated S. nigraand wild S. canadensisfruits demonstrated significant chemopreventive potential through strong in-duction of quinone reductase and inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2, which is indicative of anti-initiation and antipromotion prop-erties, respectively. In addition, fractions of S. canadensisextract showed inhibition of ornithine decarboxylase, an enzymemarker related to the promotion stage of carcinogenesis. Analysis of active fractions using mass spectrometry and liquid chro-matography-mass spectrometry revealed, in addition to flavonoids, the presence of more lipophilic compounds such assesquiterpenes, iridoid monoterpene glycosides, and phytosterols.
EMISSION AND EXCITATION SPECTRA FROM DIVALENT Ge IONS IN KCI SINGLE CRYSTALS

The emission from KCl:Ge^2+ excited in the A-absorption band was studied as a function of temperature. The A-band excitation produces complex emission from KCl:Ge^2+, compared with ones from Tl^+-like ions with the s^2 electronic configuration. The A-band emissions from KCl:Ge^0 and KCl:Ge^4+ were also measured at low temperature. The analysis of these spectra indicates that the two low-energy emission bands of KCl:Ge^2+ which peaked at 515 and 675㎚, respectively, are to be attributed to divalent Ge ions. The definitive assignment of the two bands is presented in terms of the adiabatic potential energy surface (APES).
SOUTH KOREA AND GLOBALIZATION : THE RISE TO GLOBALISM?

This article examines South Korean interpretations and practices of globalization that have conditioned economic restructuring, industrial relations, and foreign policy formation in two administrations in the 1990s. Significant continuities are apparent in terms of the fundamental quest for economic liberalization. However, the article emphasizes crucial differences in their approach to corporate deconcentration, the interventionary role of the state, the inclusion of organized labor, and North Korea policy. It raises questions about the impact of globalization of the balance of forces in Korea's domestic political economy, specifically between the state, capital, and labor. The issue of corporate deconcentration is at the center of this contest. President Kim Dae Jung seized the opportunity of the financial crisis to redeploy state power toward the goals of corporate deconcentration, financial reform, and economic restructuring. However, while these policies have been fairly successful to date in economic terms, they are not fully supported by either big business or organized labor. National consensus was short-lived during the height of the financial crisis and entrenched conflicts of interest between business, labor, and government soon reasserted themselves. The pursuit of neoliberal globalization may be in fundamental conflict with the simultaneous pursuit of democratic consolidation and social inclusion.
