Effect of Ionizing Radiation on Rat Tissue: Proteomic and Biochemical Analysis

<P>Reactive oxygen species (ROS), generated by ionizing radiation, has been implicated in its effect on living tissues. We confirmed the changes in the oxidative stress markers upon irradiation. We characterized the changes in the proteome profile in rat liver after administering irradiation, and the affected proteins were identified by MALDI-TOF-MS and ESI-MS/MS. The identified proteins represent diverse sets of proteins participating in the cellular metabolism. Our results demonstrated that proteomics analysis is a useful method for characterization of a global proteome change caused by ionizing radiation to unravel the molecular mechanisms involved in the cellular responses to ionizing radiation.</P>
Primary intraosseous carcinoma of the mandible

A very uncommon tumor, primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC), is a carcinoma arising within the jaw. The definite diagnosis of PIOC is often difficult as the lesion must be distinguished from alveolar carcinoma that may invade the bone from the overlying soft tissues or from the tumors that have metastasized to the jaw from a distant site. A case of PIOC arising in the mandible is presented. The clinical, radiologic, and histologic features are described. This rare lesion should be considered in any differential diagnosis of a jaw radiolucency.
강원,경북지역 낙엽송 지위지수 적합성 평가에 관한 연구

본 연구는 강원 및 경북지역의 낙엽송 지위지수의 적합도를 평가하기 위해 실시되었다. 연구자료는 강원 및 경북지역의 45개 낙엽송 인공림 표준지 조사로부터 우세목 1본을 선발하여 수간석 해를 통해 분석되었다. 산림청에서 개발된 지위지수표에 의거하여 본 연구대상지의 지위지수를 산정한 결과, 지위지수가 18 이하로 낮은 지역은 8곳(18%)이었으며, 지위지수가 20 이상으로 우수한 지역이 37곳(82%)으로서 대부분 지역에서 지위지수가 우세하였다. 지위지수곡선의 적합도를 평가하기위해 수간석해목의 과거에서 현재까지의 수고생장에 따른 지위지수의 변화를 도시한 결과, 초기 임령 때 지위지수와 차이가 없는 곳은 단지 8지역(18%)이었으며, 지위지수가 2∼4 m 차이가 발생한 지역이 19곳(42%), 6 m 이상 발생한 지역이 18곳(40%)으로 나타났다. This study was performed to evaluate the compatibility of site index for Larix kaempferi in Gangwon and Kyeongbuk regions. The data were collected and analyzed from stem alalysis of one dominant tree at each of 45 permanent plots installed in the regions. The result of site index estimation following the site index table developed by Korean Forest Service (KFS) showed that 8 plots (18%) were less than site index 18 and 37 plot (82%) greater than site index 20. Height growth changes of stemmed trees until present were illustrated in a graphic form to evaluate the compatibility of site index curve. The result showed that only 8 plots (18%) did not show any change of site index as trees age, 19 plots (42%) fluctuated in 2∼4m and 18 plots (40%) over 6m.

We report on the enhancement of cathode-luminescence in an $In_xGa_{1-x}N/In_yGa_{1-y}$ green light emitting diode structure using two-dimensional photonic crystals. The square lattice arrays of photonic crystals with diameter/periodicity of 200/500 nm were fabricated by electron beam lithography. Inductively coupled plasma dry etching was used to etch and define photonic crystals. Three samples with different etch depths, i.e., 170, 95, and 65 nm, were constructed. Field emission scanning electron microscope analysis shows that air holes of photonic crystal structure with inverted-cone shapes were fabricated after dry etching. Cathode-luminescence measurement indicated that up to 30-fold enhancement of cathode-luminescence intensity has been achieved.
Microwave Dielectric Properties of Ti-Te system Ceramics for Triplexer Filter

In this study, the compositions for the microwave dielectric materials were investigated to obtain the improved dielectric properties, the high temperature stability, and the sintering temperature of less than 900 ℃, which was necessary for cofiring with the internal conductor of silver. In addition, the dielectric sheets were prepared by the tape casting technique, after which the sheets were laminated and sintered. In this process, the optimum ratio of powder and binder, laminating pressure, temperature, and possibility for cofiring with the internal conductor were studied. Finally, multilayer chip treplexer filter for the 800?2,000 ㎒ range were fabricated, and the frequency characteristics of the triplexer filter were investigated. When the 0.6TiTe₃O?-0.4MgTiO₃+3wt%SnO+7wt%H₃BO₃ ceramics were sintered at 820 ℃ for 0.3 hours, the microwave dielectric properties of the dielectric constant of 29.91, quality factor of 33,000 ㎓, and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency of -2.76 ppm/ ℃ were obtained. Using the Advanced Design System (ADS) and High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS), the multilayer chip triplexer filter acting at the range of 800?2,000 ㎒ were simulated and manufactured. The manufactured triplexer filter had the excellent frequency properties in the CDAM800, GPS and PCS frequency regions, respectively.
A Case of Linear Scleroderma Involving Cerebellum with Vertigo

Linear scleroderma is a kind of disease that can cause complication of the central nervous system. Sometimes, ipsilateral intracerebral or white matter lesions in the brain magnetic resonance imaging are noted. Nystagmus is important for the differential diagnosis of dizziness. Positional nystagmus was classified into regular direction nystagmus, direction changing positional nystagmus (DCPN) and irregular nystagmus by their character. DCPN is defined as a nystagmus that changes its direction with different head and body positions, and it can be the sign of lesion in the central vestibular system. Recently, we experienced a 17-year-old woman who had a scalp linear scleroderma, treated for about 10 years and showed DCPN induced by positional nystagmus test. We report a case of linear scleroderma accompanied by cerebellar lesion with a brief review of literature.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationships among organizational environment, structure and performance in Korean sport. A convenience sample was made up of 332 practitioners in sport organizations located in South Korea. To achieve the study purpose, the data were analyzed in SPSS version 20.0 using a linear multiple regression method. The significance level was set as .05. Before carrying out the inferential analyses, validity and reliability evidence were obtained using exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach’s alpha. Following findings were derived from the study First, among the subcategories of organizational environment, complexity (ß=.194, p<.001) statistically significantly influenced organizational structure. Second, complexity (ß=.259, p<.001) and hostility (ß=-.167, p<.01) statistically significantly influenced financial performance. Third, complexity (ß=.145, p<.01), dynamism (ß=.114, p<.05) and hostility (ß=-.134, p<.05) statistically significantly influenced job satisfaction. Fourth, among the subcategories of organizational structure, formalization (ß=.219, p<.001) and complexity (ß=.182, p<.01) statistically significantly influenced financial performance. Lastly, complexity (ß=.309, p<.001) statistically significantly influenced job satisfaction. In conclusion, managerial recommendations were offered to help understand organizational environments and establish effective organizational structure for better increasing financial performance and job satisfaction in sport organizations.

<P>New mono-quaternized allyl bromide salts of bis-Cinchona alkaloid ligands, [(QD)<SUB>2</SUB>PHAL-Allyl]Br and [(QN)<SUB>2</SUB>PHAL-Allyl]Br, have been synthesized which can be converted into their highly water-soluble multihydroxylated derivatives under asymmetric dihydroxylation (AD) conditions and, thus, easily recovered by a simple extraction method after reaction and reused. These mono-quaternized ligands exhibited superior catalytic efficiency to their neutral counterparts such as (DHQD)<SUB>2</SUB>PHAL and (DHQ)<SUB>2</SUB>PHAL for the AD reactions of mono- and disubstituted styrenes under Upjohn conditions. Merely 0.1 mol % of osmium was enough to complete the reactions of mono- and disubstituted styrenes and, moreover, these ligands showed the highest enantioselectivities (e.g., for styrene, 97 % ee with [(QD)<SUB>2</SUB>PHAL-Allyl]Br) among those ever achieved under Upjohn conditions.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P> <img src='wiley_img/16154150-2006-348-18-ADSC200600253-content.gif' alt='wiley_img/16154150-2006-348-18-ADSC200600253-content'> </P>

New Strategy of Forest Tree Breeding for Society, Forest Science, and Forestry in Korea

Social and scientific changes, i.e., global warming, desertification, pollution, biodiversity, bioenergy, plant variety protection, biotechnology, timber demand, reforestation in North Korea, and etc., were reviewed for new strategy of forest tree breeding in Korea. Diversified breeding goals, globalization of breeding target species, multidisciplinary research approaches, manpower networking, establishment of new administrative and research units in KFS and KFRI were proposed. Principles suggested for new tree breeding strategy are: 1) multi-disciplinary approach in settlement of objectives, breeding methods, and etc., 2) expansion of target trees including foreign species, 3) fulfillment of both domestic and international demands for forest tree breeding, 4) establishment of breeding program well-grounded on genetic resources conservation, 5) acknowledgement of breeding products (i.e., variety, technique, gene, and etc.) as goods, and 6) provision of more research opportunities for young scientists. Lastly, ongoing tree breeding project in Indonesia and NTFP R&D Center at the College of Forest and Environmental Sciences, Kangwon National University were introduced as examples of desirable breeding projects based on target species diversification, multidisciplinary approach, and manpower networking.
