Pb and Cd concentrations and reproductive progress of feral pigeons were investigated in urban (Seoul) and industrial complex (Ansan) areas from November 2000 to May 2001. Results of the Pb analysis for the feral pigeons from the Ansan industrial complex (egg contents: 1.13 $\mu$g/wet g, bones of adult: 10.5 $\mu$g/wet g) and Seoul (1.64 $\mu$g/wet g, 29.5 $\mu$g/wet g, respectively) indicated that the Pb level of eggs and bones of adults were significantly different between the two colonies (p<0.05). Cd concentrations in liver and kidney of adult pigeons were also significantly different between the Ansan (liver: 0.14 $\mu\textrm{g}$/wet g, kidney: 0.43 $\mu$g/wet g) and Seoul (liver. 0.24 $\mu$g/wet g, kidney: 1.05 $\mu$g/wet g) colonies. (p<0.05). However, egg size and thickness, incubation period and nestling growth rates did not differ between the study areas. Also, clutch size, number of young hatched per nest and number of young fledglings per nest did not significantly different in the noted areas. Considering the lead and cadmium concentrations of pigeons, these were not as high as those considered as results in toxic effects in other species, and the biological significance from these level differences is uncertain.
Heavy Metal Concentrations in Tissues of Feral Pigeons(Columba livia) from Urban Areas in Korea

The present study was to investigate Pb and Cd concentrations in tissues of feral pigeons in urban areas. The Pb levels in bones and livers did not differ between Seoul and Kwangju areas. However, there were significant differences in kidney and liver Cd concentrations between the study sites. These are thought to be a reflection of the metal exposure conditions in the local environment. In particular, metal levels from Seoul were compared with those obtained in the same area between 1991 and 2000 in terms of the long-term biomonitoring approaches. The mean Pb concentrations in bones decreased from 59.1 $\mu$g/wet g in 1991 to 29.5 $\mu$g/wet g in 2000, totaling a reduction in concentrations of approximately 50 percent. However, there were no significant differences in the liver Pb concentrations. Concentrations of Cd in livers and kidneys did not differ between 1991 and 2000.
NecroX as a Novel Class of Mitochondrial Reactive Oxygen Species and ONOO− Scavenger

Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species are proven to be major sources of oxidative stress in the cell; they play a prominent role in a wide range of human disorders resulting from nonapoptotic cell death. The aim of this study is to examine the cytoprotective effect of the NecroX series against harmful stresses, including pro-oxidant (tertiarybutylhydroperoxide), doxorubicin, CCl4, and hypoxic injury. In this study, these novel chemical molecules inhibited caspase-independent cell death with necrotic morphology, which is distinctly different from apoptosis, autophagy, and necroptosis. In addition, they displayed strong mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and ONOO− scavenging activity. Further, oral administration of these molecules in C57BL/6 mice attenuated streptozotocin-induced pancreatic islet β-cell destruction as well as CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in vivo. Taken together, these results demonstrate that the NecroX series are involved in the blockade of nonapoptotic cell death against mitochondrial oxidative stresses. Thus, these chemical molecules are potential therapeutic agents in mitochondria-related human diseases involving necrotic tissue injury.
유전자 재조합 Human Growth Hormone 의 성장촉진 효과에 관한 연구

The growth effects of newly developed recombinant human growth hormone (rHGH), were compared with those of Biotropine. For the effective evaluation, we examined the increasing rate of body weight and the thicknes of tibial epiphysis as criteria of growth effects on hypophysectomised female rats treated with varing concentration of rHGH for 4 days. rHGH treated groups showed significant body weight gain which was less evident in Biotropine and vehicle treatment group. In tibial epiphyseal test, rHGH also showed clear effects compared to Biotropine and vehicle treatment group. Above findings indicate that newly developed rHGH has better effects of growth stimulation on female rats than Biotropine does.

Objective To investigate the reference value for cross sectional area (CSA) of the fibular nerve in Koreans. Method One musculoskeletal radiologist and one physiatrist performed fibular nerve ultrasonography (US) on 60 lower extremities of 30 asymptomatic Korean volunteers (16 males, 14 females). The mean age was 46.6 years (range: 21-75 years). We measured CSA of the fibular nerve at three sites: proximal portion (PP) at the bifurcation, mid-portion (MP), and an area just above the fibular head (FH). In addition, the fibular nerves of 7 lower extremities from 4 cadavers were cut from the fibular head to the proximal portion and divided into three sections (PP, MP, FH). They were subsequently fixed with 10% neutral buffered formalin and perpendicularly excised to 2 mm thickness. They were photographed by an operating microscope and CSA was measured. Using the Kruskal-Wallis test, measurements obtained from US images were compared between asymptomatic volunteers with a significance level of 0.05. Results In asymptomatic volunteers, the CSA of the three portions were PP: 13.8±1.2 mm2, MP: 11.1±1.0 mm2, FH: 10.9±0.6 mm2. The fibular nerves were well visualized with clear borders by US. In cadavers, the CSA of three portions were PP: 20.3±10.3 mm2, MP: 16.7±8.6 mm2, FH: 14.4±8.9 mm2. There was no significant difference between the three portions in asymptomatic volunteers and cadavers (p>0.05). Conclusion In normal Korean adults, the area of fibular nerve at the fibular head is 10.9±0.6 mm2. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the fibular nerve can be helpful in diagnosing fibular nerve lesions.
소아에서 진단된 다발성 저음영 결절 형태를 보인 간흡충증 1례

Clonorchiasis, known as the parasitic fluke in the intrahepatic bile ducts, occurs throughout Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam with high frequency. Most of the infections follow the consumptions of raw or undercooked freshwater fish, which explains its rare occurrence to childhood even in those areas mentioned earlier above. The authors have experienced it with an 8 year old boy. Abdominal ultrasonogram revealed multiple low echogenic nodules in the right lobe of liver and lymph nodes proliferation around the porta hepatis area. And abdominal C.T. scan also found multiple low attenuated nodules with delayed enhancement in liver parenchyma with hepatomegaly and multiple conglomerated lymph nodes in porta hepatis. Both abdominal ultrasonogram and C.T. scan didn't show any dilatation of peripheral intrahepatic bile ducts. In repeated stool examination, Clonorchis sinensis eggs were found in feces and the result of the skin test for Clonorchis sinensis was positive. The patient had a history of having eaten raw pond smelt back in Cheongju a month before the symptom onset. On the basis of the patient's history and the fact that Clonorchis eggs were found in feces 3 weeks after eosinophilia and symptoms were noted, the authors estimated that the findings of the patient's abdominal sonogram and C.T. scan were the radiologic findings of the acute phase of clonorchiasis, of which no report had ever been made before. So the authors report a case of clonorchiasis with atypical radiologic findings in an 8 year old boy. 한국은 간흡충증의 집중유행지역이고 성인에서의 간흡충증과 합병증의 보고는 많이 있었으나 소아의 경우 보고가 없었다. 본 증례는 8세 소아의 대변검사에서 충란을 발견하여 간흡충증을 진단하였다. 방사선 검사 소견에서는 이전에 보고된 전형적인 간흡충증의 방사선 소견과는 달리 간내 말초담도계의 확장 없이 간실질에 다발성의 저음영 결절과 간문맥내에 임파선 증식을 보였다. 저자들은 환아의 과거력 및 임상증상과 말초혈액 검사소견 등을 미루어 볼 때, 이러한 소견을 간흡충 감염에서 급성기의 방사선학적 소견이 아닌가 추정하였다. 이에 8세 남아의 대변검사에서 충란을 발견하여 확진하고 praziquantel 경구복용으로 치유한 1례를 보고하는 바이다.
무릎관절의 미만형 색소 융모 결절성 활액막염에서 관절경을 이용한 육안적 활액막 전 절제술 후 방사선치료

색소 융모 결절성 활액막염(pigmented villonodular synovitis, PVNS)은 병인이 밝혀지지 않은 증식성 질환으로, 병변 의 범위에 따라 국소형과 미만형으로 분류되며, 조직학적으로 양성이지만 파괴적인 성향을 보이므로 연골의 파괴나 주위 조직으로 광범위한 침윤이 가능한 질환이다. 활액막 절제술이 일차적인 치료방법이지만 미만형인 경우에는 주위 조직을 침윤하는 성향 때문에 재발률이 높다. 재발이 반복된 후에는 수술적 절제가 어려워져서 병변부위의 절단이 필요하게 되므로, 광범위한 병변인 경우, 수술이 용이하지 않은 경우, 또는 불완전 절제가 시행된 경우 등에서 방사선치료를 시행하여 재발을 방지할 수 있다고 보고되고 있다. 저자들은 무릎관절의 미만형 색소 융모결절성 활액막염으로 관절경을 이용한 육안적 활액막 전 절제술 후 방사선치료를 시행한 2예를 경험하였기에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하고자 한다. Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare proliferative disease involving synovial membranes. Natural history and etiology of PVNS are not well known. PVNS presents as localized or diffuse tumor like nodular lesion of the synovial lining of the joint and the synovial spaces adjacent to the joints. Though histologically benign, it is a very aggressive lesion, capable of bone destruction and widespread infiltration of surrounding tissues. Standard therapy is surgical resection, but due to the infiltrative growth, the recurrence rate is significantly high. After several relapses surgical treatment of diffuse PVNS becomes difficult and may require amputation of the involved limb. Radiotherapy can provide an effective treatment option for patients with large lesions or lesions which are not suitable for surgery, after incomplete resection to prevent relapses or to avoid amputation. We report 2 cases of diffuse PVNS in the knee joint treated with arthroscopic gross total synovectomy and radiotherapy.
