Background and Objectives : The immunomodulatory drug thalidomide can inhibit angiogenesis and induce apoptosis in experimental models. It can also induce marked and durable response in newly diagnosed myeloma patients. Thalidomide has been used at doses ranging from 200 to 800 mg with significant toxicity. No data are available on the impact of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone as initial therapy for myeloma patients. Design and Methods : To address this issue, newly diagnosed myeloma patients were treated with 50 mg/day thalidomide continuously and cyclophosphamide 150 mg/m², days 1-4 and dexamethasone 20 mg/m², days 1-5 and day 15-19, every month. Between October 2005 and October 2006, 14 patients (median age 54.5 years) were treated with low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone. Results : After a minimum of two cycles of treatment, 5 patients (55.5%) showed a partial remission. After four cycles of treatment, 10 patients (83.3%) showed a partial remission (n=6) and complete remission (n=4). After a median follow-up of 15.4 months, 1 year overall survival rate was 82.0%. Thalidomide was well tolerated without serious toxic effects. Conclusions : The combination of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone demonstrates favorable response rate and 1 year overall survival rate in newly diagnosed myeloma. Severe toxicities were not seen with this combination.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, the effect of rheological properties of Cu nano/micro (NP/MP)-inks with various amounts of dispersant on the print-ability and sinter-ability for flash light sintering was investigated. The rheological properties such as viscosity, viscoelasticity and thixotropic index of Cu NP/MP-inks were measured using a rheometer. The fabricated Cu NP/MP-inks were printed on polyimide substrate using a screen printing method. The 3D profile of printed Cu NP/MP-ink pattern was measured using surface profiler. In order to sinter the printed Cu NP/MP-inks, flash light sintering technique was employed. The flash light irradiation conditions (pulse power, pulse number, on-time, and off-time) were optimized to obtain the high sintering characteristic of Cu NP/MP-inks. In order to characterize the microstructures and transformation crystal phase of the sintered Cu NP/MP-inks, scanning electron microscopy, focused ion-beam and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed. From the results, the optimal sintered Cu NP/MP-ink film had a 6.16 μΩ·cm resistivity and 5B level of adhesion strength.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We investigated the effect of dispersant on print-ability and sinter-ability. </LI> <LI> 2.6 wt% of dispersant enhanced the printing uniformity and aspect ratio. </LI> <LI> Enhanced print-ability improved the flash light sinter-ability. </LI> <LI> The sintered Cu film showed the low resistivity and high adhesion strength. </LI> </UL> </P>

A study to reduce the substrate warpage on flash light sintering for copper nanoparticles was investigated. In order to minimize the substrate warpage, two-step flash light sintering method was performed. The flash light sintering process was divided into a preheating step and a main sintering step. To find the optimum sintering conditions of copper nanoparticles, the flash light conditions (irradiation energy, pulse number, on-time and off-time) was varied. The microstructures and transformation crystal phase of the sintered copper nanofilms were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the sheet resistance was measured using a four-point probe method. Also, the thickness of copper nanofilms was measured by alpha-step. From these results, it is found that the flash light sintered copper nanofilms have a low resistivity without any damage to the thin polyimide substrate.

<P>Recently, we reported that the A3 adenosine receptor (A3AR) agonist LJ529 (2-chloro-N6-(3-iodobnzyl)-5'-N-methylcarbamoyl-4'-thioadenosine) reduces cerebral ischemic injury via inhibition of recruitment of peripheral inflammatory cells into ischemic brain lesion. A3AR agonists, however, are known to possess anti-platelet activity, which may deter the combination therapy with tissue plasminogen activator for the therapy of cerebral ischemic stroke. Thus, the present study investigates the neuroprotective/anti-ischemic effect of a synthetic seco-nucleoside, LMT497 ((<I>S</I>)-2-((<I>R</I>)-1-(2-chloro-6-(3-iodobenzylamino)-9<I>H</I>-purin-9-yl)-2-hydroxyethoxy)-3-hydroxy-<I>N</I>-methylpropanamide) with little anti-platelet activity. LMT497 neither showed A3AR binding activity nor anti-platelet activity. In our present study LMT497 significantly attenuated the injury/death of cortical neurons exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) followed by re-oxygenation (R). LMT497 significantly reduced the ascending cellular level of reactive oxygen species under ischemic conditions by increasing the superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels. LMT497 also inhibited the migration of microglia which mediates inflammatory responses in ischemia. In rats subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO, 1.5 h) followed by reperfusion, LMT497 largely reduced brain infarction volume, and edema, and improved neurological score. Therapeutic efficacy of LMT497 was obtained by twice treatments even at 10 h and 18 h after the onset of ischemia. Collectively, LMT497 could be a therapeutic drug candidate with a wide therapeutic time window for the treatment of cerebral ischemic stroke.</P>

The gonad index, condition index, reproductive cycle and spawning of the pen shell Atrina (Servatrina) pectinata were investigated using samples from the subtidal zone of Nokdo on the Boryeong coastal waters of Korea. Samples were collected monthly by SCUBA divers for one year from January to December, 2001. A. (Servatrina) pectinata is dioecious and oviparous. The spawning season of this species occurred once a year from June to August, with the main spawning occurring between June and July when the seawater temperature was around $20^{\circ}C$. Ripe oocytes were about 60-65 ${\mu}m$ in diameter. The reproductive cycle of this species could be classified into five successive stages; early active stage (November to March), late active stage (February to May), ripe stage (April to July), partially spawned stage (June to August), and spent/inactive stage (August to October). Monthly changes in the gonad index reached a maximum (4.6) in May (ripe stage), thereafter, the GI values gradually decreased from June to August when spawning occurred continuously. Therefore, monthly changes in the GI values showed a similar pattern to the gonadal phase. The condition index (CI) of the meat part without the posterior adductor muscle reached the maximum in June (ripe and partially spawned stage) and the minimum in September (spent/inactive stage), Accordingly, monthly changes in the condition indice of the meat part without the posterior adductor muscle coincided with the gonadal phases.

A $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ (LNCAO/C) active material composite cathode was coated with carbon. The conductive carbon coating was obtained by addition of surfactant during synthesis. The addition of surfactant led to the formation of an amorphous carbon coating layer on the pristine LNCAO surface. The layer of carbon coating was clearly detected by FE-TEM analysis. In electrochemical performance, although the LNCAO/C showed similar capacity at low C-rate conditions, the rate capability was improved by the form of the carbon coating at high current discharge state. After 40 cycles of charge-discharge processes, the capacity retention of LNCAO/C was better than that of LNCAO. The carbon coating is effectively protected the surface structure of the pristine LNCAO during Li insertion-extraction.
