To investigate the effects of the Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) gene on the production of a heterologous protein, a comparative expression system for VHb and ferritin was constructed. First, the VHb gene was inserted into the downstream and upstream regions of the ferritin gene to construct pHF2 and pHF3, respectively. Next, the two plasmids pACHB1 and pVUTFH10, having the VHb gene and the ferritin gene respectively, were constructed in order to express the two genes in different plasmids by using a coplasmid expression system. It was observed that the cell growth was improved in all strains containing the VHb gene. Furthermore, in our coplasmid expression system, the presence of the VHb gene increased production of the ferritin by 1.8 times, as much as that in a strain not having the VHb gene.

Deer can be one of the susceptible animals to bovine infectious diseases, and thus, may play a role either as a reservoir or amplifier host for spreading the diseases to other species such as cattle and goat. This study was conducted to determine the serum antibodies to bacterial infectious diseases for brucellosis, tuberculosis (TB), paratuberculosis (Johne`s disease) in deer. Serum samples were randomly collected from 78 deer from 31 farms at Jeonbuk province, and 7 wild water deer from Jeonbuk wild animal treatment center during 2005 to 2007, respectively. Four farm deer (5.1%) showed antibodies to tuberculosis using Antigen Rapid Bovine TB Ab Test Kit. One elk (1.3%) and one wild water deer had antibodies for paratuberculosis. Antibody against Brucellosis was not detected in tube agglutination test (TAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). These data suggest that caution should be applied to inspection of velvet, deer blood and meat for human consumption from deer because of zoonotic bacterial diseases in deer. In addition, farmed deer can be a transmissible host for zoonotic disease to diary or raising farm.

This paper deal with a method of detecting localized defects on taper roller bearing in main spindle of machine tool system. The statistical parameters in time-domain signal processing techniques have been calculated to extract useful features from bearing vibration signals. Emloying these features, the statiscical parameters have been established to detect defects on the rollers of bearings, respectively, and used by the input feature of an artificial neural nerwork. As a result that the proposed bearing defects monitoring system could be successfully performed by using the statistical parameters of acceleration signals.

1. D. auraria Peng은 A, B, C 3型으로 나눌 수 있는데 本種은 分類學的 및 集團遺傳學的硏究의 좋은 材料이다. 2. Drosophilidae의 male genitalia는 分類學的硏究의 重要한 標徵으로 되어 있다. 3. 著者들은 1957年 5月부터 1959年 9月까지 南韓 8個處에서 採集된 drosophilid fly 中의 本種 3型의 genitalia slide preparation 173枚를 作成하여 그 6種의 剛毛 卽 1) anal plate bristle, 2) 그 tip teeth, 3) genital arch의 bristle, 4) primary clasper의 primary teeth, 및 5) marginal teeth, 와 6) secondary clasper의 teeth 數를 觀察하여 이들의 3型間에 있어서의 有意의 差를 檢定調査하고 이들이 3型을 區別하는 좋은 criteria가 될는지의 如否를 檢討하였다. 4. anal plate의 tip teeth는 三型間에 서로 有意의 差는 完全히 볼 수 없었고, 그 他에 있어서는 A, B, C 中 어느 2型間에서는 그 有意의 差를 認定할 수 있으나 3型間에 있어서의 뚜렷한 有意의 差는 볼 수 없었으니 要는 本硏究에서 取扱되는 6種의 形質의 3型間에 있어서의 뚜렷한 有意의 差는 볼 수 없으며 따라서 이들이 3型을 分類하는 좋은 criteria는 못된다고 본다. 本硏究結果에서 나타난 剛毛數는 Hsu(1949)의 記錄과 若干의 差異를 나타내고 있다. 5. 本硏究는 다음과 같은 未備漢 點이 있으니 卽 本硏究에서 取扱된 A型(47)과 B型(26)이 C型에 比하여 훨씬 적었다는 것(採集個體不足으로 因하여). 採集地에 따르는 有意性 檢定을 못했다는 點, 그리고 交難實驗等으로 集團遺傳學的 問題를 追究하지 않았다는 點 等인데 이런 問題를 檢討補充하는 硏究가 계속될 것이 要望된다. Rho D. auraria Peng is divided into 3 types and is a significant species in surveys of population systematics and population genetics. Male genitalia of this species is a important criteria for taxonomy. The authors observed 6 kinds of bristles or teeth: bristles on anal plate, tip teeth on anal plate, bristles on genital arch, primary teeth and marginal teeth on primary cilasper and teeth on secondary clasper of 47 members of Type A, 26 of B and 100 of C of the species chosen from the alcoholic specimens collected in nature during a period ranging from May 1957 to September 1959 or from the stocks maintained in the genetic laboratory, Dept. of Biology, Ewha Womans University to examine statistically the significant differences of them among 3 types and also to discuss whether they will be possible to be the criteria for intertypical classification or not. As the results of observations, intertypic differences of tip teeth on anal plate are not significant at all. In others, even though there occurred significant differences between some 2 types, are also insignificant among 3 types. In brief, significant differences of bristles or teeth concerned in the present works are not distinct intertypically, consequently these quantitative characters are not be regard as a clear out criteria for classification of the types of D. auraria Peng. By the way, there are slight differences between Hsu's descriptions (1949) of the bristles or teeth concerned here and the present results.

Purpose: The purpose of this report is to describe the proton therapy system at Samsung Medical Center (SMC-PTS) including the proton beam generator, irradiation system, patient positioning system, patient position verification system, respiratory gating system, and operating and safety control system, and review the current status of the SMC-PTS. Materials and Methods: The SMC-PTS has a cyclotron (230 MeV) and two treatment rooms: one treatment room is equipped with a multi-purpose nozzle and the other treatment room is equipped with a dedicated pencil beam scanning nozzle. The proton beam generator including the cyclotron and the energy selection system can lower the energy of protons down to 70 MeV from the maximum 230 MeV. Results: The multi-purpose nozzle can deliver both wobbling proton beam and active scanning proton beam, and a multi-leaf collimator has been installed in the downstream of the nozzle. The dedicated scanning nozzle can deliver active scanning proton beam with a helium gas filled pipe minimizing unnecessary interactions with the air in the beam path. The equipment was provided by Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd., RayStation from RaySearch Laboratories AB is the selected treatment planning system, and data management will be handled by the MOSAIQ system from Elekta AB. Conclusion: The SMC-PTS located in Seoul, Korea, is scheduled to begin treating cancer patients in 2015.

Objective: Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) has a strong genetic component. Specific gene polymorphisms may be associated with OPLL in several genes which regulate calcification in chondrocytes, change of extracellular collagen matrix and secretions of many growth factors and cytokines controlling bone morphogenesis. Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) may playa role in the pathogenesis of OPLL by intermediate nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-${\kappa}B$). The current study focused on coding single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TLR5 for a case-control study investigating the relationship between TLR5 and OPLL in a Korean population. Methods: A total of 166 patients with OPLL and 231 controls were recruited for a case-control association study investigating the relationship between SNPs of TLR5 gene and OPLL. Four SNPs were genotyped by direct sequencing (rs5744168, rs5744169, rs2072493, and rs5744174). SNP data were analyzed using the SNPStats, SNPAnalyzer, Haploview, and Helixtree programs. Multiple logistic regression analysis with adjustment for age and gender was performed to calculate an odds ratio (OR). Results: None of SNPs were associated with OPLL in three alternative models (codominant, dominant, and recessive models; p> 0.05). A strong linkage disequilibrium block, including all 4 SNPs, was constructed using the Gabriel method. No haplotype was significantly associated with OPLL in three alternative models. Conclusion: These results suggest that Toll-like receptor 5 gene may not be associated with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament risk in Korean population.
