The Sources of Conventional and Unconventional Political Participation: The Case of South Korea

The purpose of this study is to investigate the modes of political participation and examine the sources of political participation in South Korea in the individual level. While previous studies have only focused on either conventional or unconventional political participation and are somewhat limited to industrial countries, this study deals with both types of political participation simultaneously and tests the findings derived from previous studies mainly based on industrial countries in the Korean contexts. For important sources of (un)conventional political participation, this study found that both political efficacy and partisanship are important factors in explaining not only conventional, but also unconventional political participation in Korea.

<P>Hardware-based spiking neural networks (SNNs) to mimic biological neurons have been reported. However, conventional neuron circuits in SNNs have a large area and high power consumption. In this work, a split-gate floating-body positive feedback (PF) device with a charge trapping capability is proposed as a new neuron device that imitates the integrate-and-fire function. Because of the PF characteristic, the subthreshold swing (<I>SS</I>) of the device is less than 0.04 mV/dec. The super-steep <I>SS</I> of the device leads to a low energy consumption of ∼0.25 pJ/spike for a neuron circuit (PF neuron) with the PF device, which is ∼100 times smaller than that of a conventional neuron circuit. The charge storage properties of the device mimic the integrate function of biological neurons without a large membrane capacitor, reducing the PF neuron area by about 17 times compared to that of a conventional neuron. We demonstrate the successful operation of a dense multiple PF neuron system with reset and lateral inhibition using a common self-controller in a neuron layer through simulation. With the multiple PF neuron system and the synapse array, on-line unsupervised pattern learning and recognition are successfully performed to demonstrate the feasibility of our PF device in a neural network.</P>

이 연구의 목적은 호텔산업에서 (1) 고객과 기업의 첫 교감, (2) 고객의 헌신적 행위, 그리고 (3) 잠재 매개변수들 사이의 구조적 인과관계를 고찰하는 것이다. 문헌분석에 근거하여, 고객 첫 교감과 헌신적 행위 형성간의 이론적 인과관계가 제안되었으며, 이 과정에서 세 개의 매개 변수들이 제시되었다. 문헌분석 과정에서, 제시된 변수들 간의 조절효과를 제시하는 세 개의 이론적 변수들 또한 도출되었다: (1) 고객과 기업의 첫 교감 시점과 현재의 시간차, (2) 호텔 고객의 성별, (3) 기업에 대한 친밀도. 제시된 이론적 가설들을 종합하여 구조모델이 탄생하였으며, 이 구조모델은 219명의 호텔고객들로부터 수거된 데이터로 검증되었다. 데이터 분석결과에 의하면, 고객과 기업의 긍정적인 첫 교감은 브랜드 이미지를 구축하는데 필수불가결한 요소이며, 따라서 재방문 동기를 유발하는데 큰 영향을 준다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 또한, 긍정적인 호텔 이미지는 고객의 지각된 가치를 높임으로써, 고객의 헌신적 행위를 이끌어낼 수 있다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 데이터 분석결과를 바탕으로 하여, 효과적인 호텔경영을 위한 실무적 시사점들이 논의되었다. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relationships among first interaction, commitment formation, and possible mediators. Based on a thorough literature review, the theoretical relationships between first interaction and guests` commitment was proposed. In addition, key mediators between the two constructs were proposed. During this process, three key moderators (hiatus, gender, and familiarity) were proposed. Integrating the theoretical relationships, a structural model was tested, using the data selected from 219 actual hotel guests. Results from the structural analysis revealed that first interaction with guests plays a critical role in creating brand image, thus helping to induce guest revisit motivation. Findings also revealed that positive brand image enhances the hotel customers` perceived value that leads to commitment. Theoretical/practical implications for hotel researchers and practitioners were discussed.

<B>OBJECTIVE</B><P>Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a unique cerebrovascular disorder characterized by the progressive occlusion of the bilateral internal carotid arteries. Endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs), previously termed “endothelial progenitor cells,” play an important role in the pathogenesis of MMD. In this study, the authors performed morphological and functional studies of the mitochondria of ECFCs from patients with MMD to present new insights into the pathogenesis of the disease.</P><B>METHODS</B><P>The morphology of ECFCs from 5 MMD patients and 5 healthy controls was examined under both a transmission electron microscope and a confocal laser scanning microscope. The oxygen consumption rates (OCRs), mitochondrial membrane potentials (MMPs), intracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> concentrations, mitochondrial enzyme activities, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were measured. Functional activity of the ECFCs was evaluated using a capillary tube formation assay.</P><B>RESULTS</B><P>The ECFCs from the MMD patients displayed a disrupted mitochondrial morphology, including a shorter and more circular shape. The ECFC mitochondria from the MMD patients exhibited functional abnormalities, which were assessed as a decreased OCR and an increased intracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> concentration. Moreover, the ECFCs from MMD patients showed increased ROS levels. Interestingly, treatment with an ROS scavenger not only reversed the mitochondrial abnormalities but also restored the angiogenic activity of the ECFCs from the MMD patients.</P><B>CONCLUSIONS</B><P>The mitochondria of ECFCs from MMD patients, as compared with those from healthy patients, exhibited morphological and functional abnormalities. This finding suggests that the mitochondrial abnormalities may have a role in the pathogenesis of MMD.</P>

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of prehypertension and hypertension, and their association with the risk factors in a Korean population. DESIGN: The Korean Nation Health and Nutrition Survey 2001, a cross-sectional survey, was a nationally representative survey in which a stratified multistage sampling design was used. METHODS: Data from a comprehensive questionnaire, together with a physical examination and blood sample, were obtained from 6074 Korean adults (2620 men and 3454 women) aged ≥ 20 years, and analysed. RESULTS: The estimated age-adjusted prevalence of hypertension and prehypertension was 22.9% (26.9% in men, 20.5% in women) and 31.6% (41.9% in men, 25.9% in women), respectively, in the Korean population according to Joint National Committee 7 criteria. Multivariate analysis revealed that age, gender, body mass index, fasting plasma glucose, total-cholesterol and alcohol consumption were significantly associated with hypertension. Overall, only 30.2% of the hypertensive individuals had been previously diagnosed. Furthermore, 22.9% of the hypertensive individuals were being treated with antihypertensive medication, but only 10.7% had their blood pressure adequately controlled. The rates of awareness, treatment and control were higher for the women than for the men, and these rates increased with age. CONCLUSION: Hypertension and prehypertension are common in Korea, and more than one-half of the hypertensive patients have not been diagnosed. These results place great emphasis on the urgent need for a public health program to improve the detection, prevention and treatment of hypertension and prehypertension.
Amyloid β‐induced elevation of O‐GlcNAcylated c‐Fos promotes neuronal cell death

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age‐related neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive memory loss resulting from cumulative neuronal cell death. O‐linked β‐N‐acetyl glucosamine (O‐GlcNAc) modification of the proteins reflecting glucose metabolism is altered in the brains of patients with AD. However, the link between altered O‐GlcNAc modification and neuronal cell death in AD is poorly understood. Here, we examined the regulation of O‐GlcNAcylation of c‐Fos and the effects of O‐GlcNAcylated c‐Fos on neuronal cell death during AD pathogenesis. We found that amyloid beta (Aβ)‐induced O‐GlcNAcylation on serine‐56 and 57 of c‐Fos was resulted from decreased interaction between c‐Fos and O‐GlcNAcase and promoted neuronal cell death. O‐GlcNAcylated c‐Fos increased its stability and potentiated the transcriptional activity through higher interaction with c‐Jun, resulting in induction of Bim expression leading to neuronal cell death. Taken together, Aβ‐induced O‐GlcNAcylation of c‐Fos plays an important role in neuronal cell death during the pathogenesis of AD.</P>
