        <P><B>Signaling Mitochondrial Dysfunction</B></P><P>The mitochondrial and nuclear genomes contribute to mitochondrial function, and when mitochondrial function is compromised, mitochondrial retrograde signaling alters nuclear gene expression. Chae <I>et al</I>. performed gene expression profiling of engineered cells that had mitochondria containing a disease-associated mutation that causes mitochondrial dysfunction. By generating networks of transcription factors that targeted these genes, the authors revealed putative mitochondrial retrograde signaling pathways. One such pathway involved retinoic X receptor α (RXRA), the mRNA for which was reduced in the mutant cells. Network analysis and experiments in cells suggested that mitochondrial dysfunction caused by the mutation initiated a positive feedback loop that aggravated mitochondrial dysfunction: Reduced RXRA abundance further compromised expression of genes encoding products involved in mitochondrial function and translation. This gene transcription factor mapping network approach may reveal targets for therapeutic intervention of diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.</P>

        북한이탈주민 인성과 정신적 안녕감 간의 관계에서 삶의 의미가 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 북한이탈주민의 남한생활 만족도에 따라 인성과 정신적 안녕감 간의 관계에서 삶의 의미가 미치는 매개효과를 검증하였다. 연구대상은 서울, 경기지역 20대 북한이탈주민 164명이며 상관, Amos 20.0을 활용한 구조방정식 및 부트스트래핑(Bootstrapping)을 적용하였다. 연구 결과, 남한생활에 만족을 느끼는 북한이탈주민의 인성과 정신적 안녕감 간의 관계에서 삶의 의미가 통계적으로 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 이는 인성과 정신적 안녕감의 관계에서 삶의 의미가 절대적인 매개변수임을 증명하는 것이며 이 같은 결과는 북한이탈주민들의 삶의 만족도에 따라 인성과 관련된 심리적 속성 간의 구조적 관계들을 다차원적으로 탐색하고 북한이탈주민들을 위한 정신적 안녕감 프로그램을 개발 및 통일교육의 중요한 요건들을 제공했다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다. This study examined the mediating effects of meaning of life on the relationship between humanity and psychological well - being according to the South Korean life satisfaction of North Korean defectors. The Participants of this study were 164 defectors from Seoul and Gyeonggi provinces and applied correlation, structural equation and bootstrapping using Amos 20.0. The results showed that the meaning of life was statistically significant in the relationship between humanity and psychological well-being of North Korea defectors. This is to prove that the meaning of life is an absolute parameter in the relationship between humanity and psychological well-being Model This result suggested a multi-dimensional exploration of the structural relations between psychological attributes related to humanity according to the life satisfaction of South Korea in North Korea defectors. And that it implied to important factors in developing a psychological well-being program and Unification education of North Korea Defectors.

        학교 교육이 평화통일 인식에 미치는 영향 연구

        지난 2020년은 6 25 발발 70주년이었다. 이제 평화통일을 위해서 다방면에 걸쳐 준비가 필요한 때이다. 본고에서는 통일의 주역이 될 다음 세대 학생들이 남북통일을 어떻게 인식하는지 살펴보기 위한 연구이다. 먼저 교과서 서술 내용을 분석하고, 통일부와 교육부에서 실시한 ‘학교통일교육 실태조사보고서’를 살펴보았다. 분석 결과 교과서에서는 통일의 당위성을 주로 경제적 요인에 두고 있었으나 학생들은 경제적 요인을 통일을 저해하는 것으로 보고 있었다. 학생들은 통일 한국의 이미지에 대한 설명을 듣거나 실제 현재 북한의 생활 모습 등을 배우기 원했다. 향후 이러한 학생들의 요구사항을 반영하여 교과서를 집필한다면 학생들은 보다 긍정적으로 통일한국을 인식할 것이며 북한에 대한 인식도 개선될 것으로 기대한다. 2020 is the 70th anniversary of the Korean War. This is the time when various preparations for unification are necessary. In this paper, I analyzed textbook descriptions to see how students of the next generation, who are the protagonists of reunification, perceive unification, and reviewed the survey report on school unification education conducted by the Ministry of Unification and Education. As a result, in the textbooks, the necessity of unification wrote on the economic factor, but the students understood the economic factor as hindering the unification. On the other hand, students wanted to learn about the real life of unified Korea and North Korea. In the future, if textbooks are written reflecting the needs of these students, students will be more positively aware of the unified Korea and expect to improve their perception of North Korea.

        Ground Station Design for STSAT-3

        Science and Technology Satellite-3 (STSAT-3) is a 150 kg class micro satellite based with the national space program. The STSAT-3 system consists of a space segment, ground segment, launch service segment, and various external interfaces including additional ground stations to support launch and early operation phases. The major ground segment is the ground station at the Satellite Technology Research Center, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology site. The ground station provides the capability to monitor and control STSAT-3, conduct STSAT-3 mission planning, and receive, process, and distribute STSAT-3 payload data to satisfy the overall missions of STSAT-3. The ground station consists of the mission control element and the data receiving element. This ground station is designed with the concept of low cost and high efficiency. In this paper, the requirements and design of the ground station that has been developed are examined.

        Estimation of Supply and Demand for Cardiologists in Korea

        Background and Objectives: The objective of this study was to estimate the supply and demand for cardiologists in Korea and provide evidence for healthcare policy to ensure a stable and adequate workforce for optimal cardiovascular disease management. Methods: Past trends of inflow and outflow of cardiologists were used to make crude projections, which were then adjusted based on demands of services to obtain final projections. Inflow of cardiologists was estimated using second-order polynomial regression and demand for cardiology care was estimated using linear regression. Results: There were 1,139 active cardiologists who were under the age of 65 in clinical practice in Korea. The estimated number of cardiologists from 2022 to 2040 showed that the number of cardiologists would peak at 1,344 in 2032 and gradually decrease thereafter. We also estimated an increase of 947,811 cases of heart-related procedures annually from 2023 to 2032. The number of heart-related procedures per cardiologist would increase 1.4 times from 12,964 in 2023 to 17,862 in 2032. The estimated number of emergency patients per cardiologist under 50 years old would almost double from 544 in 2022 to 987 in 2032. Conclusions: We expect significant shortage of cardiologists in Korea within the next 10 years. The number of emergency patients per cardiologist will increase by nearly 50%, leading to high individual workload for cardiologists. To prevent this imbalance between supply and demand, an organized and collective approach by the specialty of cardiology is imperative to produce a balanced workforce.

        Mo-Al 복합 산화물의 질화반응 처리된 촉매상에서 암모니아 촉매 분해반응

        Catalytic activity in ammonia decomposition reaction was studied on Mo-Al nitride obtained through temperature programmed nitridation of calcined Mo-Al mixed oxide prepared by varying the MoO<sub>3</sub> quantity in the range of 10-50 wt%. N<sub>2</sub> sorption analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and H<sub>2</sub>- temperature programmed reduction (H<sub>2</sub>-TPR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate the physicochemical properties of the prepared catalyst were performed. After calcination at 600 ℃, the XRD of Mo-Al oxide showed γ-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and Al<sub>2</sub>(MoO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>3</sub> phases, and the nitride after nitridation showed an amorphous form. The specific surface area after nitridation by topotactic transformation of MoO<sub>3</sub> to nitride was increased due to the formation of Mo nitride, and the Mo nitride was observed to be supported on γ-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>. As for the catalytic activity in the ammonia decomposition reaction, 40 wt% MoO<sub>3</sub> showed the best activity, and as the nitridation time increases, the activity increased, and thus the activation energy decreased.

        Analysis of Pediatric Surgery Using the National Healthcare Insurance Service Database in Korea: How Many Pediatric Surgeons Do We Need in Korea?

        Background: In the past, general surgeons (GSs) without a pediatric surgical subspecialty often performed surgery on children and, even now, GSs are performing many pediatric surgeries. We aimed to investigate the involvement of pediatric surgeons (PSs) and GSs in pediatric surgery, compare the outcomes of surgery in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and estimate the appropriate PS workforce in Korea. Methods: We used surgical data from the National Health Insurance Service database that was collected from patients under the age of 19 years in hospitals nationwide from January 2002 to December 2017. In this database, we found 37 hospitals where PSs worked by using the index operation (congenital diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal atresia, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, Hirschsprung's disease, abdominal wall defect, jejunoileal atresia, malrotation, anorectal malformation, and biliary atresia). It was assumed that the surgery in the 37 hospitals was performed by PS and that the surgery in other hospitals was performed by GS. Mortality was analyzed to compare the outcomes of acute abdominal surgery in the NICU. We estimated the number of PS currently needed in Korea for each situation under the assumption that PS would perform all operations for the index operation, main pediatric diseases (index operation + gastroesophageal reflux disease, choledochal cyst, inguinal hernia, and appendicitis), acute abdominal surgery in the NICU, and all pediatric surgeries. Additionally, we estimated the appropriate number of PS required for more advanced pediatric surgery in the future. Results: The number of pediatric surgeries from 2002 to 2017 increased by 124%. Approximately 10.25% of the total pediatric surgeries were performed by PSs, and the percentage of the surgery performed by PSs increased from 8.32% in 2002 to 15.92% in 2017. The percentage of index operations performed by PSs annually was 62.44% in average. It was only 47.81% in 2002, and increased to 88.79% in 2017. During the last 5 years of the study period, the average annual number of surgeries for main pediatric diseases was approximately 33,228. The ratio of the number of surgeries performed by PS vs. GS steadily increased in main pediatric diseases, however, the ratio of the number of surgery performed by PS for inguinal hernia and appendicitis remained low in the most recent years. The percentage of the number of acute abdominal surgery performed by PS in the NICU was 44% in 2002, but it had recently risen to 89.7%. After 30 days of birth, mortality was significantly lower in all groups that were operated on by PS, rather than GS, during the last 5 years. In 2019, 49 PSs who were under the age of 65 years were actively working in Korea. Assuming that all pediatric surgeries of the patients under the age of 19 years should be performed by PS, the minimum number of PS currently required was about 63 if they perform all of the index operations, the main pediatric surgery was about 209, the NICU operation was about 63, and the all pediatric surgeries was about 366. Additionally, it was determined that approximately 165 to 206 PS will be appropriate for Korea to implement more advanced pediatric surgery in the future. Conclusion: The proportion of the pediatric surgery performed by PS rather than GS is increasing in Korea, but it is still widely performed by GS. PSs have better operative outcomes for acute abdominal surgery in the NICU than GSs. We believe that at least the index operation or the NICU operation should be performed by PS for better outcome, and that a minimum of 63 PSs are needed in Korea to do so. In addition, approximately 200 PSs will be required in Korea in order to manage main pediatric diseases and to achieve more advanced pediatric surgery in the future.

      • α-Lipoic acid attenuates vascular calcification <i>via</i> reversal of mitochondrial function and restoration of Gas6/Axl/Akt survival pathway

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Vascular calcification is prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease and leads to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although several reports have implicated mitochondrial dysfunction in cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease, little is known about the potential role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the process of vascular calcification. This study investigated the effect of α-lipoic acid (ALA), a naturally occurring antioxidant that improves mitochondrial function, on vascular calcification <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. Calcifying vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) treated with inorganic phosphate (Pi) exhibited mitochondrial dysfunction, as demonstrated by decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production, the disruption of mitochondrial structural integrity and concurrently increased production of reactive oxygen species. These Pi-induced functional and structural mitochondrial defects were accompanied by mitochondria-dependent apoptotic events, including release of cytochrome <I>c</I> from the mitochondria into the cytosol, subsequent activation of caspase-9 and -3, and chromosomal DNA fragmentation. Intriguingly, ALA blocked the Pi-induced VSMC apoptosis and calcification by recovery of mitochondrial function and intracellular redox status. Moreover, ALA inhibited Pi-induced down-regulation of cell survival signals through the binding of growth arrest-specific gene 6 (Gas6) to its cognate receptor Axl and subsequent Akt activation, resulting in increased survival and decreased apoptosis. Finally, ALA significantly ameliorated vitamin D<SUB>3</SUB>-induced aortic calcification and mitochondrial damage in mice. Collectively, the findings suggest ALA attenuates vascular calcification by inhibiting VSMC apoptosis through two distinct mechanisms; preservation of mitochondrial function <I>via</I> its antioxidant potential and restoration of the Gas6/Axl/Akt survival pathway.</P>
