Various zeolite-type materials have been synthesized using Cheju Scoria, which is widely distributed in Cheju Island, Korea. Cheju Scoria is composed mainly of plagioclase, pyroxene, hematite, and aluminosilicate glass. Since the plagioclase and glass components can be used as Si and Al sources, the zeolitic conversion of Scoria was examined using a conventional hydrothermal synthesis under alkaline conditions. Na-P1 zeolite, hydroxy sodalite, nepheline hydrate, analcime, and cancrinite were obtained by using different reaction temperatures and NaOH concentrations. Na-P1 was observed at 120℃ in 2 M NaOH over a long reaction period, while hydroxy sodalite was formed over a wide range of reaction temperatures, 100 to 150℃, in > 3 M NaOH.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using bulk tank milk samples was evaluated as a screening test for bovine tuberculosis (TB), a contagious chronic disease of cattle. An ELISA with MPB70, a major antigen of <I>Mycobacterium bovis</I> was performed using paired sets of milk and sera samples from 33 tuberculin-positive and 43 tuberculin-negative cattle. Anti-MPB70 antibodies were detected in milk samples and there was a significant correlation between seroreactivities of milk and sera samples (<I>R<SUP>2</SUP></I>=0.83). Using the tuberculin skin test as the reference test, the sensitivities of ELISA using milk and sera samples were 87.8% and 81.8%, respectively, and the specificities were 97.7% and 100%, respectively.</P><P>In the screening test using bulk tank milk samples from 931 dairy herds in Whasung, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, the positive rate for anti-MPB70 antibody was 4.5% (42/931) and the tuberculin-positive rate was 2.8% (26/931). Individual milk samples (<I>n</I>=253) were collected from randomly selected 8 problematic and 3 negative herds (positive and negative in the screening test by MPB70 ELISA using bulk tank milk samples, respectively) and tested by MPB70 milk ELISA. In the problematic herds, positive rates were 10.5% (20/190) for anti-MPB70 antibodies in milk ELISA and 2.1% (4/190) in the tuberculin skin test. More than one dairy cows were positive by milk ELISA among the problematic herds, and all tuberculin-positive dairy cows were positive in the milk ELISA. Further, no positive cows were detected in negative herds both by milk ELISA and tuberculin skin test. These results suggest that an ELISA, using bulk tank milk samples, might be a potential efficient screening test for bovine TB of dairy cows.</P>

<P>Carboxylate-functionalized polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are promising materials for gas separation application. However, highly carboxylate-functionalized PIMs (HCPIMs) have not been reported owing to overlooked intermediate products. Herein, we successfully prepared HCPIMs (similar to 92 mol % of carboxylic acid group) through a prolonged alkaline hydrolysis process (360' h). HCPIMs were found to be soluble in various organic solvents, such as tetrahydrufuran and ditnethyl sulfoxide, and then freestanding HCPIM membranes could be prepared by the common solution casting method: The. HCPIM membranes were found to have smaller interchain distances and higher CO, affinity than original PIM-1 films. For example, small gas molecules,:such as carbon.dioxide, were effectively separated due to the, enhanced diffusivity selectivity combined with the smaller cavity size. Further, strong interactions between carbon dioxide and the carboxylic acid groups increased solubility selectivity. These:synergetic effects endowed the HCPIM membrane with a selectivity of 53.6 for CO2/N-2 separation, the highest among reported chemically modified PIMs.</P>

Effects of Reading Ability and Affective Attitudes through TETE & TETE&K. The New Studies of English Language & Literature 51 (2012): 257-279. This study aims to investigate how two different teaching styles (TETE vs. TETE&K) influence on English reading ability and learners' affective attitudes on English. Fifty-four university students from two classes were chosen for this study. They took 'General English Reading class' for a semester in 2010. The study collected the data from pre- and post-TOEIC-tests (Reading section) in order to know which class improved learners' reading ability more, which was analyzed with the ANOVA using SPSS 17.0. Next, questionnaires were given twice to investigate the change of learners' affective attitudes toward English. The results showed that there was no significant difference in learners' reading ability between TETE and TETE&K. Secondly, learners' affective attitudes of both groups changed positively, and this change can be said to result from the atmosphere of each class, not teaching style. Other teaching equipments such as computer, audio-visual aids can be used to make up for communication between teachers and students. (Chonbuk National University)

<P>We have investigated the electrical transports of double-walled carbon nanotube field effect transistors (DWNT-FETs) with modified contacts. The CNT/Au metal contacts of DWNT-FETs were modified with a self-assembled monolayer of 2-aminoethanethiol molecules. In ambient air, the contact-modified DWNT-FETs showed a decreased conductance in the <I>p</I>-channel (negative gate voltages) and an increased conductance in the <I>n</I>-channel (positive gate voltages), while the original device showed <I>p</I>-type transport. In a vacuum, the <I>n</I>-channel current in the contact-modified DWNT-FET started to rise. We observed a clear <I>n</I>-type transport in the high vacuum. Almost no changes in the gate threshold voltages were observed by means of the contact-modification with a self-assembled monolayer. While the semiconducting DWNT-FET showed a clear transition from a <I>p</I>-type to <I>n</I>-type transistor with contact modification, no apparent changes were observed in semi-metallic DWNT devices.</P>

Optically compensated splay (OCS) mode, where the liquid crystals (LCs) are almost homeotropically aligned with rubbed surfaces at parallel directions and a mid-director orients parallel to the substrate,was known to show a wide-viewing-angle due to self-compensation effect. The device requires a setting voltage and phase transition time in order for LC to have a transition from almost vertical alignment to the splay state. The setting voltage, transition time, and response time of the device as a function of surface pretilt angle were studied. The results indicate that with decreasing surface pretilt angle in the OCS cell, both phase transition time and setting voltage decrease and response time becomes faster.
