        Electron delocalization and charge mobility as a function of reduction in a metal–organic framework

        <P>Conductive metal-organic frameworks are an emerging class of three-dimensional architectures with degrees of modularity, synthetic flexibility and structural predictability that are unprecedented in other porous materials. However, engendering long-range charge delocalization and establishing synthetic strategies that are broadly applicable to the diverse range of structures encountered for this class of materials remain challenging. Here, we report the synthesis of KxFe2(BDP)(3) (0 <= x <= 2; BDP2- =1,4-benzenedipyrazolate), which exhibits full charge delocalization within the parent framework and charge mobilities comparable to technologically relevant polymers and ceramics. Through a battery of spectroscopic methods, computational techniques and single-microcrystal field-effect transistor measurements, we demonstrate that fractional reduction of Fe-2(BDP)(3) results in a metal-organic framework that displays a nearly 10,000-fold enhancement in conductivity along a single crystallographic axis. The attainment of such properties in a KxFe2(BDP)(3) field-effect transistor represents the realization of a general synthetic strategy for the creation of new porous conductor-based devices.</P>

        Background: The current standard therapy for chronic hepatitis C, the combination of pegylated interferon (PEG IFN) and ribavirin (RBV), has a 50% failure rate in achievingsustained virologic response (SVR). This meta-analysis aims to determine the effi cacy and safety of statins as add-on therapy with PEG IFN and RBV for chronic hepatitis C. Methods: A thorough search was done using the key terms “statin” and “hepatitis C.” Three authors independently appraised all articles for validity and relevance. Any disagreement was resolved by consensus. Six RCTs were included with a total of 704 patients. The proportion of patients achieving SVR was treated as dichotomous variables. Statistical analysis was done using the Peto Method with fi xed-effect analysis model, and Peto odds ratio as effect measure. Weighted averages were reported as relative risks with associated 95% confi dence interval. Abstracted data were then analyzed using Review Manager 5 program. Results: Results showed that triple therapy with PEG IFN, RBV, and statin was superior to standard therapy of PEG IFN and RBV in achieving SVR [RR 0.42 CI 95% (0.31, 0.57)] and RVR [RR 0.25 CI 95% (0.11, 0.58)]. No heterogeneity was found between studies for SVR(I2=0; P=0.80) and RVR (I2=0; P=0.51). Conclusions: Statins are effective and safe as add-on therapy for chronic hepatitis C.

      • Prevalence of Vitamin D Deficiency in Chronic Liver Disease at the Outpatient Clinics of the University of the Philippines- Philippine General Hospital

        Aims: Low vitamin D levels result in higher incidence of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, poor treatment response, and increased morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). This study assessed whether CLD patients in the Philippines, despite adequate sunlight exposure, have vitamin D deficiency and whether this is associated with poor outcomes. Methods: Consecutive CLD patients at the outpatient clinics of PGH were included. Clinical data such as age, gender, body mass index, etiology of CLD, presence of cirrhosis and ascites, and number of hours of sun exposure daily were recorded. Standard biochemical liver tests within 3 months of enrolment into the study, such as alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, prothrombin time, total bilirubin, and albumin were documented. Child Pugh scores for cirrhotic patients were computed. Serum vitamin D was determined using the ARCHITECT chemiluminescent microparticle assay. STATA SE version12 for Windows was used for statistical analyses. Univariate analysis and simple logistic regression were used to determine independent predictors of vitamin D deficiency. A p-value of<0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: A total of 72 patients were included. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (<20ng/mL) was 6.9%; insufficiency (20.1 to 29ng.mL) 52.8%; and sufficiency (>30ng/mL) 40.3%. Both univariate analysis and logistic regression showed no statistical difference among vitamin D deficient, insufficient, and sufficient subjects in terms of etiology and factors affecting the severity of CLD. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are prevalent in Filipino CLD subjects. Guidance on adequate sunlight exposure and dietary intake should be part of health maintenance intervention for these patients.

      • IMPLEMENTATION OF AN AUTOMATIC FACE DETECTION AND TRACKING SYSTEM USING MOTION DETECTION AND PRINCIPAL COMPONENT ANALYSIS

        In this paper, we have presented a system which performs automatic face detection and tracking using Motion Detection and Principal Component Analysis. The system was implemented with the use of a network camera VB-C50i and MATLAB 7.0. We divided the study into three (3) major stages. The first stage was the motion detection. After motion had been detected, face detection happened and then finally the detected face was tracked down. The first stage is motion detection. This was performed by setting a threshold for the maximum difference and used this threshold as an indicator for motion. The second stage for this system is face detection. When the system detected the image, the camera automatically captured the image. The captured image was then zoomed in and the possible face region was taken as input data. This possible face region underwent principal component analysis for face detection. After the principal component analysis detected the face, the image was cropped and zoomed in. The final stage is the tracking down of the face as analyzed in the first two stages. Once the system was able to track down the location of the face, it automatically displayed the detected face area. The whole system functioned in such away that it continued to loop every time a motion was detected. The whole system shows the efficiency and accuracy of automatic face detection and tracking with the use of principal component analysis.

        Effects of Perceived Benefits on Airbnb Repurchase Intention

        본 연구는 에어비앤비(Airbnb) 고객들이 에어비앤비 이용 시 고려하는 혜택 요인을 제시하고, 어떠한 혜택 요인이 에어비앤비 재구매 의도에 영향을 미치는지 조사하기 위해서 수행되었다. Vogt and Fesenmaier s 모델(1998)을 적용하여 4개의 구성개념이 제시한 8개의 요인(실용적 혜택: 금전적 이익, 실용적 혜택: 편의성, 실용적 혜택: 지식, 쾌락적 혜택, 혁신적 혜택: 참신함, 혁신적 혜택: 다양성, 혁신적 혜택: 독특성, 사회적 혜택)을 독립변수로 제시하였다. 에어비앤비를 이용해 본 적이 있는 한국 거주자를 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실하였으며, 총 416명이 설문조사에 참여하였고 부정확한 답변을 제외한 410부의 자료를 이용하여 통계분석을 실시하였다. 요인분석과 신뢰도 검증 결과, 참신함, 다양성, 독특성 등 3개의 요인으로 제시된 혁신적 혜택 구성개념은 하나의 요인으로 규명되어 총 6개의 혜택 요인이 최종적으로 제시되었다. 에어비앤비 고객의 재구매 의도에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 다중회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 3개의 요인(쾌락적 혜택, 혁신적 혜택, 실용적 혜택: 금전적 이익)이 재구매 의도에 유의미한 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 토대로, 이론적 시사점과 실무적 시사점을 제시하고 마지막으로 본 연구의 제한점 및 추후연구 방향을 논의하였다. This study aims to identify the benefits that Airbnb users perceive in using Airbnb and to examine effects of those benefits on Airbnb users’ repurchase intention. Applying Vogt and Fesenmaier’s model (1998), this study identified four constructs of perceived benefits of Airbnb use and eight factors: functional benefit (monetary saving, convenience, knowledge), hedonic benefit, innovation benefit (novelty, variety, uniqueness), and social benefit. The study population was individuals from South Korea who had stayed at an Airbnb accommodation at least once. Applying a survey research method, panel members of a research company in South Korea were invited to participate in the study through an email with the online survey link. A total of 416 respondents completed the survey and 410 data were used for the statistical analyses. Compared to the originally suggested four constructs and eight factors, our study results suggested four constructs and six factors. The three factors of the innovation-benefit-construct were suggested to be merged as a single factor. This study found that hedonic benefit, innovation benefit, and functional benefit: monetary saving significantly positively affected Airbnb users’ repurchase intention. Based on the study results, study implications and limitations were discussed.

      • Dental Pulp Stem Cell: A review of factors that influence the therapeutic potential of stem cell isolates

        Undifferentiated stem cells are being studied to obtain information on the therapeutic potential of isolates that are produced. Dental Pulp Stem Ccell (DPSC) may provide an abundant supply of highly proliferative, multipotent Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC), which are now known to be capable of regenerating a variety of human tissues including bone and other dental structures. Many factors influence DPSC quality and quantity, including the specific methods used to isolate, collect, concentrate, and store these isolates once they are removed. Ancillary factors, such as the choice of media, the selection of early versus late passage cells, and cryopreservation techniques may also influence the differentiation potential and proliferative capacity of DPSC isolates. This literature review concludes that due to the delicate nature of DPSC, more research is needed for dental researchers and clinicians to more fully explore the feasibility and potential for isolating and culturing DPSCs extracted from adult human teeth in order to provide more accurate and informed advice for this newly developing field of regenerative medicine.
