Background and Objectives : Vocal polyps and nodules are representative chronic benign laryngeal disease. Treatment options for vocal polyp and nodule in general include voice therapy or laryngeal microsurgery. The purpose of this study was to analyze voice results before and after laryngeal microsurgery. Materials and Method: Vocal polyp and vocal nodule patients were treated by laryngeal microsurgery from March 2004 to December 2006 at Kosin University Hospital. All were women. Voice analysis studies were done before and after laryngeal microsurgery. Five measurements were performed: MPT, Fo, jitter, shimmer and NHR. Results: There was significant improvement in the vocal polyp patients regarding MPT, jitter, shimmer and NHR. Also there was significant improvement in the vocal nodule patients regarding MPT, jitter and shimmer. Conclusion: MPT, jitter, shimmer and NHR will be effective acoustic parameters in documenting the quantitative changes in the vocal polyp patients. MPT, jitter and shimmer will be effective acoustic parameters in documenting the quantitative changes in the vocal nodule patients before and after laryngeal microsurgery.

Purpose: Vocal symptoms have been reported after thyroidectomy and even in the absence of injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve or the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the subjective and objective voice changes in patients without laryngeal nerve injury after thyroidectomy. Methods: The subjects had undergone total thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid carcinoma from November 2007 to December 2008. Twenty-eight subjects (males: 8, females: 20) were selected for this study. Voice analysis was prospectively evaluated in the subjects at the time of preoperation and postoperation (10.8 months for the males and 11.7 months for the females). A subjective analysis was done using the visual analogue scale (VAS, 0: no symptom, 10: severe symptoms) and objective analyses were determined by several parameters such as the fundamental frequency (Fo), jitter, shimmer and the noise to harmonic ratio (NHR) using the multi-dimensional voice program. Maximum phonation time (MPT)was performed as an aerodynamic test. Results: 3 patients (37.5%) among the males and 14 patients (70%) among the females had subjective postoperative voice change. The VAS showed a significant difference for the females (0 to 1.25±0.97, P<0.001), whereas no changes were shown for the males (0 to 0.88±1.25, P>0.05). The vocal parameters (Fo, jitter, shimmer, NHR) and MPT showed no significant changes for both the males and females (P>0.05). Conclusion: Subjective voice changes may occur after thyroidectomy without laryngeal nerve injury. Surgeons should take possible voice changes into consideration when informing patients before thyroidectomy. (Korean J Endocrine Surg 2011;11:175-178)

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and volume reduction of ultrasonography-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for benign thyroid nodules. Methods: Twelve benign thyroid nodules in 11 euthyroid patients underwent RFA between January 2010 and December 2010. RFA was carried out using an internally cooled electrode under local anesthesia. Thyroid nodule volume was evaluated before RFA and during follow-up. Results: The mean initial volume was 8.9 ml (0.4∼33.0 ml). After RFA, the mean volume was decreased to 3.6 ml (0.1∼17.0 ml) with statiscal significance (P=0.003). The mean volume reduction rate was 64.6% (25.5∼95.4%). Most patients complained of pain during or after RFA, but the pain was relieved with oral analgesics. There was vocal cord palsy in one patient, who recovered one month after RFA. Conclusion: Ultrasonography-guided RFA is a safe modality effective at reducing volume of benign thyroid nodules. (Korean J Endocrine Surg 2011;11:252-255)

This study is to correct the misused meaning of 'Environment-friendly' and 'Ecological'. To establish clear notion of ecological design, it is to be proposed five principle of ecological design by conceptualization of organism. By result of design principle analysis. first, whole unity means that integrate relation with surrounding through organism structure of analogy and inserted architecture. second, circulation of material and energy has economical meaning through circulation of nature element. third, Variety of organic composition regards architecture as organism and it means that adapt in various form in surrounding environment. forth, evolution and growth mean that correspond variable in environment through natural growth concept. fifth, reciprocity by context could mean interchange system that is physical and visible in surrounding environment through conservation of past topography and active introduction of nature. In conclusion, ecological design have access method that is atomized by each principle, and have various meaning by application to contemporary architecture.

Activated carbon was prepared from rice hulls using potassium hydroxide as an activation agent. The effect of process variables such as carbonization, activation temperature, and chemical ratio of KOH to char on the pore structure and activation yield of the carbons was studied. High-quality activated carbons with high surface area, high pore volume, and well-developed pore structure could be prepared, when the char produced by the carbonization of rice hulls in a stream of nitrogen at 700℃ was well mixed with a concentrated solution of potassium hydroxide at a KOH : char ratio of 4 : 1 and then the mixture was activated for 3 hours at 850℃ in a stream of nitrogen.
