The thickness evenness of staple yam is the important quality aspect that has to be considered in the staple yam manufacturing process, in which the raw material for the staple yam formation has the form of sliver. Thus, sliver evenness control in the drawing process is an important subject to improve the yam quality and the efficiency of the following processes. Textile industries take advantage of doubling operation to improve the thickness evenness of sliver, which is one of the conventional methods, while at the same time autoleveller is applied. Doubling is obtained by laying several slivers parallel each other to compensate the thick and thin cross-section of each sliver on the basis of probabilistic law. But the drawing operation itself has the attribute to cause irregularity in the output sliver. Therefore, we need to analyze the effect of the doubling on the thickness evenness of the output sliver. This study reports the experimental results based on the individually driven drawing frame that is controlled digital1y. The results show that as the doubling number increases, the regularity of output sliver improves, but there exists an optimal doubling number. The best thickness evening effect occurrs when six-doubling is applied.
