Fluorocarbons attract huge attention from both industrial and academic field due to their advantageous characteristics : low surface energy, low refractive index and chemical inertness. To make use of their properties, linear fluorocarbons mostly composed of CF2 groups have been widely studied. Although it is not used as much as -CF2- group, -CF3 group have superior properties compared to-CF2- group in terms of surface energy and refractive index. In this presentation, we studies nonafluoro-t-butyl moieties that is composed of three -CF3 groups to examine the effect of -CF3 group. Nonafluoro-t-butyl moiety was firstly introduced into the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) the common polymer and then their film properties are broadly explored.

Because the nonspecific protein adsorption can make a deterimental effect to be a cause for the material failure, there is significant interest to antifouling materials in the fields of bio-medical, analytical devices and marine biofouling. From now, some materials like PEG based polymer, zwitterionic molecules and amphiphilic material have been found to exert protein antifouling property. However, most of these materials are not suitable for long-term contact with aqueous environment because most of them are hydrophilic that are apt to degenerate in aquatic condition. In this presentation, we synthesized the various PVDF-based polymers having additional fluorinated groups to strengthen the hydrophobic function. Then antifouling properties were estimated by protein absorption test on the polymer film and correlated with the surface characterization results.

Vinylidene fluoride (VDF) based polymers attract tremendous attention due to exceptional properties such as weatherability, chemical inertness, and good mechanical properties. However, their lack of antibacterial property limits their adoption as biomedical materials. In this study, to overcome this problem, PVDF-based cationic polymers were prepared by grafting quaternized ammonium or pyridinium monomers. The polymers could kill gram-positive gram-negative, and the pathogenic yeast (antimicrobial activities > 99.99%). By blending with commercial PVDF, 1 wt% or 5 wt% of the polymers were added to the pristine PVDF to provide PVDF films with antimicrobial properties. The blend films show notably higher antimicrobial performances (>99% for Blend-Q4VP-5) as well as enhanced mechanical properties compared to those of pristine PVDF.
The effect of nonafluoro-t-butyl moiety on wetting properties of polymer films

Fluoroorganic compounds have been attracting tremendous attention from both academic and industrial field due to their special properties of fluorocarbon such as strong C-F bond and low surface energy. To exploit these characteristics, linear fluorocarbons with long chain have been extensively studied so far. However, the environmental regulations originated from their bioaccumulation issue are depicted as an obvious limitation utilizing them. In contrast, the fluorocompounds including nonafluoro-t-butyl moieties are not currently prohibited to use and they are expected to exert outstanding properties because of the effect of three -CF3 groups in a molecule. This presentation shows the strategy for creating elegant polymer surfaces by including nonafluorot- butyl moiety.
Fluoro-Functionalization of N-Isopropylacrylamide-Based Polymer for LCST Control

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) is a presentative thermo-responsive polymer (TRP) which shows lower critical solution temperature (LCST) around 32 ℃. Because it is necessary to control the LCST to expand the applicable window in biological area, many researchers have tried to introduce hydrophilic or hydrophobic groups in to the NIPAm-based polymers. In this study, PNIPAm derivatives with fluorinated functional groups are synthesized and their LCST and association behavior are estimated. We expect that these fluorinated groups can create new hydrogel polymers as well as modify the thermal behaviors of TRPs effectively.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has the excellent thermal, chemical, mechanical, and electrical properties. In this reason, PVDF has the second largest market share after poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) in fluoropolymer areas. PVDF is commercially produced by emulsion polymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) in the presence of a fluorinated surfactant, however, perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFASs) such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and ammoniumperfluorooctanoate (APFO) were listed as persistent organic pollutants due to their persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic nature. In this study, green emulsion polymerization of VDF was performed without any fluorinated surfactants. In order to characterize the properties of the prepared PVDF, SEM, DSC, TGA, NMR, GPC, DLS were used. In addition, produced pure PVDF latex dispersions were used as surface coating agents.
