Three alkaloids, (-)-stylopine (I), (+)-chelidonine (II), oxysanguinarine (III) and two triterpenoids, $6{\alpha}-hydroxy-A-neo-germacer-22(29)-en-30-oic\;acid$ (IV) and hop-22(29)-en-30-oic acid (V), were isolated from the methanol extract of of Chelidonium majus var. asiaticum, and their cytotoxicity were tested against five cultured human tumor cell lines.

The phytochemical study of Viscum album (Loranthaceae) led to the isolation of twelve compounds, lupeol (1), betulonic acid (2), betulinic acid (3), termitic acid (4), ursolic acid (5), β-sitosterol (6),α- spinasterol (7), oleanolic acid (8), 5- hydroxy-1-(4'- hydoxyphenyl)-7-(4"-hydroxyphenyl)-hepta-1-en-3-on (9), 2'- hydroxy- 4',6'-dimethoxychalcone-4-0-glucoside (10), 2'-hydroxy-4',6'-dime thoxychalcon e-4-0-[apio-syl(1-> 2)]glucoside (11) and sringin (12). Their structures were established by chemical and spectroscopic methods. The cytotoxicity of the isolated compounds was evaluated by sulforhodamine B assay against five cultured human tumor cell lines.

Three sesquiterpene lactones (1, 2 and 5) and two lipid glycerols (3 and 4) were isolated from MeOH extract of Ainsliaea acerifolia (Compositae). Based on spectral data, their chemical structures were determined as estafiatone (1), zaluzanin C (2), 3-O-(9Z, 12Z, 15Z-octadecatrienoyl) glycerol (3), 3-O-(9Z, 12Z-octadecadienoyl) glycerol (4) and glucozaluzanin C (5). Compounds 1, 3 and 4 were previously not reported from Ainsliaea species.

The phytochemical study of the aerial parts of Artemisia slyvatica(Asteraceae) led to the isolation of nine sesquiterpene lactones, 1-alpha-hydroperoxy-rupicolin A acetate(1), rupicolin B acetate(2), rupicolin A acetate(3), 1-alpha-hydroxy-4-alpha-hydroperoxy-bishopsolicepolide(4), 1-alpha-hydroperoxy-4-beta-hydroxy-8-alpha-acetoxy-guaia-2,9,11(13)-triene-6-alpha,12-olide(5), 1-alpha-hydroperoxy-4-alpha-bishoplicepolide(6), 1-alpha-4-beta-dihydroxy-8-alpha-acetoxy-guaia-2,9,11(13)-triene-6-alpha-12-olide(7), rupicolin A(8) and 1-alpha-4-alpha-dihydroxybisphopsolicedpolide(9). Their structures were established by chemical and spectroscopic methods.

The main cause of diabetic neuropathy, one of the most debilitating complications, is the chronic hyperglycemia, the increase sorbitol or the decrease of nerve growth factor(NGF). NGF, a protein, plays a major role in the development and maintenance of peripheral nervous system. Systemic administration of NGF prevents manifestations of neuropathy in rodent models of diabetic neuropathy. In the previous investigation, we report the hypoglycemia effect of Dioscorea rhizoma extract(DRE) in diabetic mice. The present study shows protective effect of DRE on diabetic neuropathy by induction of NGF protein. We investigated the NGF level in salivary gland and sciatic nerve of normal mouse and the effect of DRE on sciatic nerve conductivity and thermal hyperalgesia test in Type 2 db/db mouse. DRE increased endogenous NGF level in salivary gland and sciatic nerve of mouse. And sensory nerve conductivity velocity(SNCV), motor nerve conductivity velocity(MNCV) and thermal hyperalgesia increased in DRE treatment mice compared with control group. On the basis of our results, we conclude that DRE increase induction of endogenous NGF level and have protective effect on diabetic neuropathy by induction of NGF. Therefore, we propose that long-term use of DRE might help prevention of diabetes-associated complication; diabetic neuropathy.

The present study was designed to clarify the antidiabetic activity and mechanism of Dioscorea rhizome in diabetic db/db mice. Mice were administered Dioscorea rhizome and rosiglitazone orally for 7 weeks and the effects of these compounds on fasting blood glucose, glucose tolerance and intestinal disaccharidase activity in db/db mice were evaluated. The fasting serum glucose of the D. rhizome treated group was reduced when compared with that of the db/db control group. In addition, the disaccharidase activities in homogenates of the proximal, middle and distal segment of the small intestine were significantly decreased response to D. rhizome treatment, especially in the middle segment. These results suggest that D. rhizome decreases blood glucose via a decrease in the activity of disaccharidase in the mucosa of the middle region of the small intestine in db/db mice.

A new oxygenated monoterpene (4) was isolated from the methanol extract of the aerial part of Erechtites hieraceiolia together with six known components, a dimethylheptane (1), three ionone derivatives (2,3 and 7) and two phenylpropanoids (5 and 6). Their structures were identified by means of physico-chemical and spectral data to be (2E, 5E)-6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylhepta-2,4-dienal (1), 3(R)- hydroxy-5,6- epoxy-β-ionone (2), 3(R)-hydroxy-5,6-epoxy-β-ionol (3), (3E, 6E)-3,7- dimethylocta-3,5-dien-1,2,7-trios (4), 2-hydroxy4- (2-propenyl)phenyl- β-D -glucopvanoside (5), 2-methoxy-7(2-pnpenyl)phenyl -β-D -glucopyra- noside (6) and (6R,9R)-3-oxo-β-ionol-α-D -glucopyranoside (7).
