Cytopathologic findings of two cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea are reported. The carcinomas grew as an intratracheal mass. By bronchial washing, brushing and/or post-bronchoscopic sputum cytology, large cohesive sheets, lobulated clusters, or three dimensional ball-like structures were obtained. They had numerous cyst-like spaces containing characteristic globular basophilic material. The tumor cells were uniform and had a small amount of cytoplasm. Nuclei were small and hyperchromatic, Nucleoli were occasionally observed. The cytological diagnosis was confirmed by bronchoscopic biopsies. Since the cytomorphology of adenoid cystic carcinoma is characteristic, review of these cytologic features will enhance the diagnostic accuracy in exfoliative cytology of the respiratory tract.

Purpose: To construct a urologic cancer database using a standardized, reproducible method, and to assess preliminary characteristics of this cohort. Materials and Methods: Patients with prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers who were enrolled with diagnostic codes in the electronic medical record (EMR) at Asan Medical Center from 2007–2016 were included. Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) was used to design the Asan Medical Center-Urologic Cancer Database (AMC-UCD). The process included developing a data dictionary, applying branching logic, mapping clinical data warehouse structures, alpha testing, clinical record summary testing, creating “standards of procedure,” importing data, and entering data. Descriptive statistics were used to identify rates of surgeries and numbers of patients. Results: Clinical variables (n=407) were selected to develop a data dictionary from REDCap. In total, 20,198 urologic cancer patients visited our institution from 2007–2016 (bladder cancer, 4,616; kidney cancer, 5,750; prostate cancer, 10,330). The overall numbers of patients and surgeries increased over time, with robotic surgeries rapidly growing over a decade. The most common treatment for urologic cancer was surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Conclusions: Using a standardized method, the AMC-UCD fosters multidisciplinary research. This constructed database provides access to clinical statistics to effectively assist research. Preliminary data should be refined through EMR chart review. The successful organization of data from 2007–2016 provides a framework for future periods of investigation and prospective models.

Polycythemia vera is a hematopoietic stem cell disease, characterized by sustained and excessive proliferation of erythrocytic, granurocytic and megakaryocytic cells in the bone marrow resulting in pancytosis in peripheral blood. There have been a few reports of glomerulonephritis with polycythemia vera, most of which were IgA nephropathy. We report a case of a polycythemia vera associated with proteinuria. We confirmed the polycythemia vera according to World Health Organization criteria. Renal pathology showed IgA nephropathy and minimal change disease. Periodic phlebotomy was done and hydroxyurea was administered without specific managements for renal disease. After 3-month treatment, hemoglobin level decreased and proteinurea disappeared.

The physico-chemical stability of aucubin, a hepatoprotective iridoid glucoside, in buffered aqueous solutions was studied using a stability-indicating reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. The degradation of aucubin followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. In strong acidic regions, aucubin was rapidly degraded by the specific acid catalysis, forming dark brown precipitates. From the rate-pH profiles, it was found that aucubin was most stable at the pH of about 10. From the temperature dependence of degradation, activation energies for aucubin at pH 2.1 and 4.9 were calculated to be 22.0 and 24.3 kcal/mole, respectively. The shelf-life $(t_{90%})$ for aucubin at pH 9.07 and $20^{\circ}C$ was predicted to be about 603 days. A higher ionic strength accelerated the degradation of aucubin at pH 4.01. The effect of metal ions on the degradation rate of aucubin at pH 7.16 was in the rank order of $Cu^{2+}\;>\;Fe^{3+}\;>\;Co^{2+}\;>\;Fe^{2+}\;>\;Mg^{2+}$. On the other hand, $Mn^{2+}\;and\;Ba^{2+}$ slowed the degradation rate.

본 증례는 유육종증이 피부와 신장을 동시에 침범하여, 특히 신장에서는 육아종성 간질성 신염에 의한 신부전까지 일으켰으나 고용량의 스테로이드에 좋은 치료 반응을 보인 예로써 신기능 저하와 고칼슘혈증이 동반된 환자에서 신장 유육종증은 주요 감별진단에 포함되어야 하겠다. Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology. It can involve any organ and present in various clinical forms, but renal involvement is very unusual. We report on a 68-year-old man with renal sarcoidosis. He presented with unexplained renal impairment, hypercalcemia, and multiple light brown papules on the buttock and lower extremities. Non-caseating granulomas and interstitial nephritis were revealed in skin and kidney biopsies. The serum creatinine, hypercalcemia, and skin lesions rapidly improved on high-dose steroid therapy. One year later, the serum calcium level was normal, and serum creatinine was 1.3 mg/dL. (Korean J Med 77:S1226-S1230, 2009)

The dissociation constant of erythrosine in the mixed solvent systems of water-alcohols and water-acetone at various pH and in concentration media were determined by spectrophotometric method. Methanol, ethanol, and acetone were employed as solvents and studied the changes of pK values of erythrosine according to the kind and change of concentration of organic solvent which is mixed into water solution. The effect of organic solvent on pK is negligible at 40% while in the case of above 40% mixing, it is not negligible.
