This study was carried out to investigate the morphological development of the tongue in the 60-, 90- and 120-day-old fetuses and neonates of Korean native goats by light microscopy. In 60-day-old fetuses, the tongue tissues were differentiated into epithelium, lamina propria, and muscle layer. The primordia of filiform, conical, lentiform, fungiform, and vallate papillae appeared by this time, and rudiments of taste buds were observed in the epithelia of the primordia gustatory papillae. The dorsal lingual epithelia were PAS positive. Collagenous fibers and blood vessels were present in the lamina propria. In 90-day-old fetuses, the gustatory glands were moderately positive for PAS and muscle fibers, and connective tissues were developed. In 120-day-old fetuses, many taste buds were observed in the gustatory papillae. The muscle bundles, collagenous fibers, blood vessels and gustatory glands were well developed. In neonates, over 40 taste buds were found in a transverse section of the vallate papillae. Muscle layers, blood vessels, collagenous fibers and gustatory glands were very well developed.

The morphological studies on the cecal development in the 60-, 90-, and 120-day-old fetuses and the newborns of Korean native goats were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results were summarized as follows ; Scanning electron microscopic studies : 1. In the 60-day-old fetuses, fold-like shapes protrusion on the cecal mucosa surface appeared. In the 90-day-old fetuses, the cecal villi appeared to be columnar shapes. In the 120-day-old fetuses, the cecal villi showed various tongue-like or columnar shapes. In the newborns, only the rudimental trace of the villi and the intestinal glands were observed. Transmission electron microscopic studies : 2. In the 60-day-old fetuses, the cecal epithelia were simple columnar in some areas and stratified columnar in others, and the epithelial cells contained nuclei, nucleoli, ER, mitochondria, Golgi complexes, zonula occludens, desmosomes, digitiform intercellular junctions, and large masses of the glycogen granules. 3. In the 90-day-old fetuses, the cecal epithelia were simple columnar in some area and stratified columnar in other. The microvilli of the cecal epithelia became much larger and longer than those in the 60-day-old fetuses, and intercellular junctions were developed, and increased numbers of ER, mitochondria, Golgi complexes were observed and the goblet cells contained a lot of the secretory granules. 4. In the 120-day-old fetuses, the cecal epithelia were only simple columnar in all areas. Microvilli and cytoplasmic organelles were well developed and the irregular annular nuclei were observed. 5. In the newborns, the cecal epithelia were covered with extensive microvilli, and the goblet cells with secretory granules were protruded into the lumen. And some goblet cells secreted the secretory granules into the lumen.

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are relatively rare submucosal tumors with an incidence of 10% in the gastrointestinal tract. In the gastrointestinal tract, the esophagus is the most common site for GCTs, while the colorectum is an uncommon site. GCTs are often found incidentally as small, submucosal tumors on esophagogastroduodenoscopy. On endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), GCTs usually have a homogeneous hypoechoic pattern. EUS cannot adequately distinguish GCTs from carcinoid tumors. We report a case of a cecal GCT that was misdiagnosed as a carcinoid tumor by EUS and was treated by endoscopic mucosal resection, along with a review of the literature. (Intest Res 2010;8:191-194)

A 20-day-old female Diprosopia in Holstein calf was observsd macroscopically and radiographically. Anterior head duplication(Diprosopia) was observed and all structures caudal to it were normal. She had two muzzles, three eyes, two ears and two tongues. The tongues were joined at their base just posterior and had one hyoid bone. Schistognathia and cleft lips were also observed in the lower jaws. She had an oral cavity, single epiglottis and a laryngeal cavity communicated with one trachea. The cerebral hemispheres were duplicated and fused together in the caudal region. The olfactory and optic nerves were duplicated. The incisive, nasal, pterygoid, parietal, ethmoid bones and vomer were duplicated, respectively. The skull of Diprosopia was shared by an occipital bone. The mandibules, palatines and sphenoid bones were duplicated incompletely. Three orbits and two fontanelles were observed. The medial lacrimal bones and maxillae were duplicated incompletely and fused with each other, respectively. Cleft palates were observed. Medial mandibular mass which was fused together and was duplicated incompletely at the part of its cranial, was shown synchondrosis with the left mandible, but not with the right.
