국외 심지층 처분장 부지선정기준 분석 (II) : 수리지질

본 연구에서는 심지층 처분장 부지선정 시에 고려되는 요소를 지질, 수리지질, 지화학 등으로 분류하고 그 두 번째 단계로 수리지질분야의 세부 항목을 투수성, 분배 확산계수, 경계조건, 지하수 연대로 분류하였다. 그리고 이들 항목에 대한 국외 기준분석을 수행하였다. 부지선정요소(Siting factor)에 대한 기준(Criteria)은 각 국가의 지질환경, 지질정보 및 사회환경에 따라 다른 조건 혹은 값을 제시하고 있다. 일 예로, 유사한 특성의 결정질 암반을 기반암으로 하는 스웨덴, 핀란드에서도 투수성에 대한 기준을 각기 다르게 적용하고 있다. 스웨덴에서는 수리전도도의 기준을 부지선정 <단계 3>에서 $10^{-8}m/s$ 이하로 설정하고 있지만, 핀란드에서는 암반의 투수성에 대한 신뢰성 있는 자료가 많이 확보되지 않아 투수성을 부지선정 기준으로 적용하지 않고 있다. 또한, 분배계수에 대한 기준에서도 스웨덴에서는 평균 값의 100배 이하인 지역을 배제하지만, 독일에서는 $0.001m^3/kg$의 정량화 된 값을 제시하고 있다. 따라서, 수리지질 요소에 대한 심지층 처분장 부지선정 기준을 명확히 설정하기 위해서는 국내 기반암의 심부환경에 대한 많은 정보를 확보하여야 할 것으로 판단된다.

불포화 토양내에서 가스상 오존 이동특성에 대한 LNAPL과 토양수분의 영향

Laboratory scale experiments were carried out to delineate the effects of liquid phases, such as soil water and light nonaqeous phase liquid (LNAPL) on the transport of gaseous ozone in unsaturated soil. Soil water enhanced the transport of ozone due to water film effect, which prevents direct reaction between soil particles and gaseous ozone, and increased water content reduced the breakthrough time of ozone because of increased average linear velocity and decreased air-water interface area. Diesel fuel as LNAPL also played a similar role with water film, so the breakthrough time of ozone in diesel-contaminated soil was significantly reduced compared with uncontaminated soil. Ozone breakthrough time was retarded with increased diesel concentration, however, because of high reactivity of diesel fuel with ozone. In unsaturated soil containing two liquids of soil water and LNAPL, the transport of ozone was mainly influenced by nonwetting fluid, diesel fuel in this study. 불포화 토양내에서 가스상 오존의 이동특성에 대한 토양수분과 Light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL)의 영향을 알아보기 토양칼럼실험을 실시하였다 토양수분은 토양입자에 수막을 형성하여 가스상 오존과 토양입자의 직접적인 접촉을 방해하여 오존의 이동을 증가시키는 역할을 하였다. 토양수분이 증가할수록 불포화 토양내의 기-액 접촉면적 감소와 오존의 평균선형유속증가로 인해 오존의 이동속도가 증가하였다. LNAPL로 사용된 디젤유의 경우도 토양 표면에 막(Film)을 형성하여 가스상 오존의 이동을 증가시키는 역할을 하였다. 하지만, 토양 수분과는 반대로 디젤유 농도가 증가할수록 오존의 이동속도는 감소하였다. 토양수분과 LNAPL성분이 동시에 존재할 경우에는 토양입자에 Non-wetting유체로 작용하는 LNAPL에 의해 오존의 이동이 영향을 받는다는 것을 알 수 있었다

본 연구에서는 심지층 처분장 부지선정 시에 고려되는 요소를 지질, 수리지질, 지화학 등으로 분류하고 그 첫 번째 단계로 지질분야의 세부 항목을 지형, 토양층, 암종, 구조지질, 역학적 안정성, 지질학적사건으로 분류하였으며, 이들 항목에 대한 국외 기준분석을 수행하였다. 부지선정요소(Siting factor)에 대한 기준(Criteria)은 각 국가의 처한 지질환경에 따라 다른 조건 혹은 값을 제시하고 있다. 화산 및 지진활동이 빈번한 일본에서는 이에 대한 기준을 상대적으로 자세히 기술하고 있으며, 빙하작용이 예상되는 스웨덴에서는 빙하작용에 의한 지반 융기 침식에 대한 영향을 상세히 분석하였다. 따라서, 본 논문 결과는 향후 국내의 심지층 처분장 부지선정 기준 수립시에 중요한 참고자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. Geology, hydrogeology, and geochemistry are the main technical siting factors of a geological repository for spent nuclear fuels. This paper focused on how rock's different geological conditions, such as topography, soils, rock types, structural geology, and geological events, influence the functions of the geological repository. In the context, the site selection criteria of various countries were analyzed with respect to the geological conditions. Each country established the criteria based on its important geological backgrounds. For example, it was necessary for Sweden to take into account the effect of ice age on the land uplift and sea level change, whereas Japan defined seismic activity and volcanism as the main siting factors of the geological repository. Therefore, the results of the paper seems to be helpful in preparing the siting criteria of geological repository in Korea.

The issue of race has been ignored or downplayed in the traditional criticism of Othello. However, in reading this scandalous play, one cannot avoid Othello's color, or racist remarks and attitudes of certain characters, or the plot itself. This paper sets out to examine racism in the play by locating it in the social, cultural context of its times and discover where the play stands on the issue of Othello's blackness. His blackness is important not because of what he is, but because of how he is perceived, specifically by the other characters, and by himself. Elizabethan Englishmen had racial prejudices regarding black men as barbarous, treacherous, lustful, jealous or as 'others.' In view of the prejudice of the Abstract time it is remarkable that Shakespeare chooses to make his tragic hero a black man and his villain the white Iago. He introduces the color prejudice through the racist discourse of Iago, Roderigo, and Brabantio, but deliberately criticizes such attitudes, producing a noble tragic hero. In the play Shakespeare reverses the associations attached to the colors white and black. While Othello denies stereotype, it is Iago who is dramatically constructed as black. Othello's anxiety about his blackness becomes a powerful ingredient in the tragedy. Throughout the play he never defends his blackness and defines his identity, drawing on images created by Venetian society. By the end of the play his own blackness is hateful and terrible to him. It is this anxiety that Iago exploits to set his downfall in motion. Othello's alienation as the 'other' in the white Venetian society evokes strong tragic feelings in the audience. He struggles to fit into a civil society that does not want him to fit in. His one claim to acceptance is his service to the state. When Othello must defend his marriage to Desdemona, he relies on his rank, abilities, virtue, and service as a soldier. However, these cannot protect him from pointed racial remarks, which hint at miscegenation. At the last moment of his suicide, Othello's alienation is revealed through the tragic acceptance of his original status as a racial outsider. The play invites us to sympathize with Othello who is never fully assimilated and so remains outside the social system, vulnerable to its prejudices.

John Webster’s Duchess of Malfi addresses issues of corruption, female sexuality, marriage and social mobility by dramatizing a confrontation of values between the Duchess and her brothers, Ferdinand and the Cardinal. The play reflects Jacobean anxieties surrounding shifting economic, social and religious institutions during the transitional period of the early seventeenth England. Conflicts of this play come from the Duchess’s decision to disobey her brothers and to marry Antonio not her social equal. The Duchess acts according to her own desires, trespassing social norms of the period. Throughout the play the Duchess questions stereotypical views of women and the importance of class within patriarchal society. She defies traditional social and sexual hierarchies, challenging Jacobean society’s views regarding the representation of the female sexuality. The Duchess’s marriage with Antonio is presented in terms of harmony and mutuality, evoking Protestant companionate ideas of marriage. Much of the scholarly debate about the Duchess has centered on her sexuality. She is blamed for being irresponsible, overly passionate and too bold. However, Webster’s Duchess is neither lascivious, as her brothers have blamed, nor the paragon of chastity. She expresses her own sexuality in a healthy and natural manner. For his dramatic purpose Webster significantly modified his source, William Painter’s The Palace of Pleasure, where the Duchess is portrayed as a lusty widow, to show sympathy toward the Duchess. The Duchess is presented as a powerful woman with a dominant will and is portrayed as strong and independent to the moment of her death. But she ultimately fails to transcend any true boundaries created by the patriarchal society in which she lives. It’s important to note that Webster does not make the Duchess just a victim of male-dominated corrupt society. The play explores the possibility of societal change to overcome the oppression of ideologies within patriarchal society.

John Webster’s The White Devil is a complex play considered as one of the most controversial plays among critics. Some earlier critics complained of the play’s decadent sensationalism, structural incoherence and lack of moral purpose. However, there have recently been a number of critical voices against this harsh criticism by means of various interpretations. This paper aims to read the play in terms of social commentary, which deserves to be discussed as a tragic satire. The world of the play is chaotic and corrupt with no justice and no rationality. All the members of the court except for Cornelia and Isabella are deceitful, vengeful, lecherous and hypocritical. Webster's satiric commentary focuses on the corruption of the court and the church, calling in question a patriarchal society which exploits women. The three primary virtues for a woman of the Jacobean period were considered to be obedience, chastity and silence. Cornelia and Isabella play the roles expected of them, but Vittoria does not. The play takes as its central character Vittoria, a defiant female character who refuses to be controlled by the patriarchal structures: the state and the church. Vittoria is generally thought to be the “white devil” of the title, a woman guilty of adultery and inciting to murder. Nevertheless, Vittoria reveals herself throughout the play to be independent, strong, intelligent, and logical. Through her Webster unveils political and social abuses of his time where corruption exists at every level. Especially, when she defies the court in the trial scene exposing the injustice and corruption of men in power, Vittoria as a victim becomes sympathetic and evokes our admiration for her courage. In fact, her accusers are more hypocritical, manipulative and vicious than she. Webster chooses to use Vittoria, an assertive female character to criticize the chaotic and corrupt society of his time. But she is not able to break through its boundaries because she is destroyed in the end. Her defiant voices are eventually suppressed and contained by social hierarchy of male supremacy.

벤 존슨은 그의 희곡의 프롤로그와 에필로그, 그리고 그의 비망록 『발견들』에서 자신의 극작이론을 밝히고 있는데, 이를 통해 볼 때 그의 희극에 대한 개념은 단순히 웃음을 야기 시키는 이상의 것임을 알 수 있다. 다시 말하면 그는 “교화시키면서 동시에 즐거움을 주는 것”을 희극의 목표로 삼는다. 존슨의 희극에 대한 교훈적인 이론은 여러 비평가들이 언급하듯이 그의 희극과 도덕극의 전통과의 연관성을 고려하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 전통적인 도덕극의 맥락에서 존슨의 희극의 특징을 살피고 있으며, 그의 대표작인 『연금술사』와 『바쏠로뮤시장』을 대상으로 그의 도덕적 비젼이 어떻게 작품 속에 구현되고 있는지를 등장인물들을 통하여 구체적으로 밝히고 있다. 존슨의 희극을 도덕극의 전통과 연결시켜 볼 때 유사성이 발견되나, 등장인물의 설정에서부터 극의 톤에 이르기까지 전체적으로 존슨 특유의 극작방법을 발견할 수 있다. 존슨은 후기 도덕극의 구조와 기교를 희극적 톤으로 융합함으로써 당대의 현실세계를 드러내며, 관객으로 하여금 주변의 세계와 나아가 자신을 뒤돌아보게 하는 사회 풍자가의 역할을 충실히 수행한다고 볼 수 있다. 『연금술사』의 프롤로그에서 존슨은 런던이 작품의 배경임을 구체적으로 밝히면서 동시대인의 어리석음을 묘사하고 있으며, 작품의 등장인물들을 통하여 풍자가로서 인간의 우행과 탐욕, 탈선, 모순 등 위선적인 사회상을 적나라하게 드러내고 있다. 이러한 과정에서 존슨의 도덕가로서 자신의 내세우는 것이 아니라 나름대로의 기준과 관점을 간접적으로 설정한다. 다시 말하면 관객들로 하여금 등장인물의 우행을 보고 스스로 그 웃음이 자신으로 향하게 만든다는 것이다. 『바쏠로뮤 시장』에서는 이러한 주제가 더욱 발전되어 나타난다. 자코비언 시대의 영국의 시장을 배경으로 선한 인물과 악한 인물로 대비시켜 당시의 사회상을 적나라하게 비판한다. 영국의 한 시장을 배경으로 삼지만 이는 분명 영국사회 전체의 축소판이라고 할 수 있다. 존슨은 풍자적 희극을 통해 인간의 탐욕과 위선, 어리석음 등을 비판하는 엄격한 도덕가 역할을 하고 있으며 그의 주요 관심사는 건강한 시민사회의 건설에 있다. 특히 그는 자신의 판단이나 비판만으로 이상적 사회가 이루어질 수 없음을 인식하고 독자 개개인의 자각과 자아비판에 의해서 이루어질 수 있음을 강조하고 있다. 다시 말하면 독자의 현명한 판단에 의해 행동으로 옮겨질 수 있기를 바라고 있다.
