Vol.39 No.3

This study explored the effect of COVID-19 vaccine news frames and online comments on emotional and cognitive responses. Specifically, the effects of vaccine news frames (narrative vs. numeric) and different comment types (uncivil vs. civil) on issue relating to anxiety, anger, sympathy, and credibility were all investigated. In addition, the moderating effect of comment types was explored in the process of influencing policy support by mediating emotions and credibility of the COVID-19 vaccine frame. For the experiment, a 2*2 factorial design was used. Experimental participants (N=320) were divided into four groups: narrative frame*uncivil comment condition, numeric frame*uncivil comment condition, narrative frame*civil comment condition, numeric frame*civil comment condition. The results showed that the average of narrative frame was higher than the average of numeric frame for discrete emotions (e.g., anxiety, anger, sympathy), while the average of narrative frame for vaccine policy credibility was lower than the average of numeric frame. The interaction effect of news frames with comment types was significant. Specifically, sympathy was observed as being the highest in the narrative frame*civil comment condition, while the credibility was lowest in the narrative frame*uncivil comment condition. In terms of the COVID-19 narrative frame affecting policy support, comment types were found to significantly moderate the mediating effects of sympathy and credibility. Based on these results, this study suggested the direction of COVID-19 vaccine articles and online comments.

Vol.96 No.-

The study investigates the different impacts of the climate change reporting types (narrative vs. numeric & daily frame vs. yearly frame) on cognitive appraisals and negative emotions. Also the mediating effects of cognitive appraisals and negative emotions were examined in the process of revealing the relationship between the types of climate change reporting and preventive behavioral intentions. A 2*2 experiment (reporting approaches*frames) was designed. In the results, reporting approaches and frames influenced self involvement and psychological distance as the components of cognitive appraisals even though negative emotions were not aroused by reporting types and frames. Also in the relational process between reporting types and preventive behavioral intentions, cognitive appraisals and negative emotions together play mediating roles. However, negative emotions alone did not show any mediating effects between reporting types and preventive behavioral intentions. These results imply that cognitive appraisals are prerequisites for arousing negative emotions in the study model proposed. Reporting approaches and frames indicated interaction effects. All the mediating effects in the case of narrative reporting were disappeared in the yearly reporting frame. Research implications based on the results were discussed and further ramifications were suggested.

Korean Adult English Learners’ Perceptions of the Common Grammatical Features of English as a Lingua Franca

2019 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.16 No.3

The present study ex amines Korean adult English learners perceptions about English as a lingua franca (ELF) and the common grammatical features of ELF . 276 university students participated in this study through an online survey portal. The survey consists of two parts : part one asks participants' attitudes and perceptions about ELF statements, and part two is an accepta bility judgement task for common grammatical features of ELF. Overall, t he participants showed moderately positive attitude toward most ELF statements despite they manifested stronger preference for native speaker oriented English learning on a few aspects . The results from the acceptability judgement task for 19 grammatical items consistently remained between neutral and slightly positive ranges. These results indicate that the participants already possess the concept of ELF, at least beyond a non negative stance, and admit the features of ELF as acceptable forms of English for global communication. P Participants‘ major, study abroad experiences, and experiences of communicating with foreign people did not cause consistent and significant difference in their attitude toward ELF, nor in their acceptability judgements. For timely and effective incorporation of ELF into English classrooms in Korea, further research need to be conducted with various learner groups regarding the perception about ELF, the development of teaching activities and materials, and the empirical data from on-site applications.

Vol.116 No.-

The purpose of this study is to develop a scale for measuring incivility in online media and platforms. Based on the discussions of previous studies, this study divided online incivility into three sub-dimensions: ‘insulting dimension for individuals’, ‘hate dimension for specific groups’, and ‘continuous and repetitive bullying’. An expert Delphi method was conducted to verify the suitability of sub-dimensions, components of sub-dimensions, and questionnaire questions on incivility. Based on the Delphi method, a cross-sectional survey (N = 2000) was conducted. The results showed that the classification of the three sub-dimensions and the compositions of these sub-dimensions were statistically valid. And the measurement model fit of the questionnaire questions for three sub-dimensions was also valid. Specifically, convergent validity and discriminant validity for three sub-dimensions and questions were statistically appropriate, securing conceptual reliability for sub-dimensions and scales. Based on these results, this study suggested that online incivility should be comprehensively constructed such as ‘insulting dimension for individuals’, ‘hate dimension for specific groups’, and ‘continuous and repetitive bullying’. In addition, this study is meaningful in that it proposed an online anti-citizenship scale that can quantitatively measure problematic communication occurring in online space

Vol.120 No.-

The objective of this study was to examine the attributes of comments on online articles. Specifically, the study explored 17,234 online comments on the 20th presidential election (November 1, 2021 to February 28, 2022), along with reports from the newspapers Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, Kyunghyang Sinmun, and Hankyoreh. This data supported the investigation of the relationship between the characteristics of the articles and the attributes of the comments. The coding schemes of prior studies were used to conduct a content analysis through human coding. Specifically, analysis items of article characteristics (e.g., headline characteristics, article genre, type, and main target) and comments (e.g., rude comments, hate comments) were constructed. In particular, the analysis items were constructed based on the concept of online incivility, and thus the comments were operationally conceptualized as “uncivil comments.” Online incivility refers to problematic expressions, attitudes, and behaviors that can harm individuals and groups as anti-normative words and actions that appear in various interactions through online media and platforms. Results showed that there were significantly more uncivil comments when there were direct quotes (e.g., double quotes) in the headline than when there were no direct quotes. Additionally, when the main target of the article was politicians or presidential candidates themselves (e.g., Lee Jae-myung, Yoon Suk Yeol, etc.), the proportion of political, age, and job-hating comments among the subdimensions of hate comments was high. Furthermore, the proportion of uncivil comments was high in the straight article type. Based on these results, this study provided understanding of how uncivil comments are induced according to the characteristics of the article in the online space and discussed the direction to reduce these uncivil comments.
