Trace Organic Contaminants in Sediments from Deep-sea Basin near Dokdo, Korea

Trace organic contaminants in deep-sea sediments near Dokdo were analyzed. Total PAHs concentration ranged 14.8-314 ng/g dry weight and high molecular weight PAHs were dominant. The highest PAHs concentration was detected at A19 which located at Ulleung Basin. Most of organochlorines were under detection limit. Among the detected organochlorines, DDT compounds were dominant and followed by HCHs and HCB. Butyltin compounds and most of organophosphorus pesticides were not detected. Vertical distribution of PAHs showed typical sub-surface maximum and decreasing trends depending on depth. The highest PAHs concentration reached 454 ng/g. Some organochlorines, DDT, HCH was detected and also showed decreasing trends. Other target organic pollutants were not detected in core sediments. Abnormally high level of PAHs concentration in A19 was discussed and the input sources were inferred to be the transport of sludge derived pollutant dumped at dumping site Byung by deep current.

In this study, the concentrations of various hydrocarbon (HC) were measured from the ambient air at Mallipo beach after the Hebei Spirit oil spill accident on Dec. 2007. To determine HC levels in those samples, the analysis was made by SPME method aided by the GC/MS system. To produce quantitative HC data, all the calibrations were conducted in reference to toluene. The HC released from oil-covered soils were also analyzed by headspace method; according to this analysis, the concentrations of paraffinic (9), aromatic (8) and miscellaneous components (5 compounds) were found above a few tens of ppb. In ambient samples, 10 compounds were measured which consisted of 8 paraffinics and 2 aromatics. And they have the maximum and minimum concentration that were 34.3 ppb (n-undecane) and 2.84 ppb (toluene). However, the concentration levels of the 2 aromatic compounds (toluene and xylene) measured during this study period were not distinguished from those commonly observed from ambient air. Based on our analysis, we were able to confirm that the types and the concentration levels of hydrocarbons in ambient samples were in accord with those derivable from a large oil spill accident and the resulting weathering processes.
Tributyltin Compound in Sediments and Tissues of Oysters and Rock Shell in Gwangyang Bay, Korea

- Tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products, dibutyltin (DBT) andmonobutyltin (MBT) were quantitatively determined in surface sediments and twomolluscan species, Pacific oyster ( Crassostrea gigas ) and rock shell ( Thais clavigera ),from Gwangyang Bay, Korea. Butyltin compounds were detectable in almost all sedi-ment and biota samples. Tributyltin concentrations in surface sediment ranged 2~ 33ng g-1, which is at a lower end of TBT concentrations in industrialized bays in Korea.However, TBT levels in sediments were related to boating activities around the bay. Inbiota samples, TBT concentrations were in the range of 178 ~ 2,458 ng g-1 for oyster and47~ 236 ng g-1 for rock shell. Relatively high TBT concentrations in biota were foundnear wharves for fisherboats and harbor areas. About 90 ~ 100% of the female T. clav-igera displayed imposex, and relative penis length index of the imposexed -female wasin the range of 20.9 ~ 107.9%. Furthermore, TBT body residue had a significant positiverelationship with degree of imposex in T. clavigera . Overall, TBT concentrations inGwanyang Bay were much lower than other major bays in Korea.

Passive air samplers with polyurethane foam (PUF) disks were employed to determine seasonal gas phase variation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient air on Anmyeon island from March 2007 to January 2008. Sum of 13 PAHs ranged between 3.5 ng/m3 and 27.6 ng/m3. Total PAHs during the heating season was 6.2 times higher than non-heating season. The dominant PAHs components during sampling periods were low and middle molecular weight PAHs including phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene and chrysene. Gas exchange fluxes of PAHs across the air-water interface of the Yellow Sea were calculated using a modified two-film exchange model. PAHs fluxes ranged from 196 ng/m2/d net volatilization during summer to 3830 ng/m2/d net absorption during winter. Passive air sampler provides a convenient and cost-effective tool for measuring averaged gas phase PAHs, which was successfully used for calculation of gas exchange flux of PAHs in the Yellow Sea.
