We determined the effects of temperature shifts on the kinetics of the numbers of antibody-secreting cell (ASC) in the olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus immunised with formalin-killed Edwardsiella tarda. When fish that were acclimated to 22℃ and immunised at that temperature were transferred to a lower temperature (12℃) at a various times (immediately, 1, 2 or 4 weeks) after immunisation, both further differentiation of B cells and secretion of antibody from the ASC developed at 22℃ were suppressed at 12℃. However,in the converse experiment (12℃ to 22℃), the magnitude of the humoral immune response was recovered independent of the time of the transfer after immunisation at low temperature, even though the peak levels of each transferred group did not reach the level found in 22℃ control group. The results were confirmed by counting the number of specific antibody secreting cells (SASC) in the spleen. This study provides the evidences of the immune reaction that the potential for antibody production in B cells of flounder, the most important species in aquatic industry of Korea, immunized at high temperature is suppressed by subsequent exposure to low temperature and that low temperature-induced humoral immuno suppression can be reversed by exposure to a higher temperature.

The Gini coefficient is typically estimated using income data collected by surveying a group of randomly selected people. It is well known that people tend to under-report their income when asked about their income. As a result, the Gini coefficient is likely to be under-estimated. This paper investigates how to correct such a prevalent under-estimation problem occurring when estimating the Gini coefficient using survey data. We calculate top 1% income shares using tax return data, and use these results to correct the problem. Using our correction method, we have found the following: (i) the official Gini estimates announced by the National Statistical Office are under-estimated, (ii) the degree of income inequality might have become worsened over time than described by the official Gini estimates, and (iii) the extent of under-estimation is likely to be larger for South Korea than other OECD countries such as the US. 본 논문은 가계조사 자료를 바탕으로 하여 추정된 지니계수에 전형적으로 나타나는 과소추정의 문제를 해결하는 것을 연구목적으로 한다. 이를 위한 방법으로 가계조사 자료 및 조세 자료의 최상위 1% 소득점유율을 추정하여 그 추정결과를 사용하여 지니계수의 보정을 시도하였다. 보정된 지니계수를 분석한 결과 통계청에서 통상적으로 발표하는 지니계수는 과소추정 되어있을 뿐 아니라, 시간에 따른 증가추세가 실제보다 다소 약하게 보여 진다는 사실을 발견하였다. 또한 본 논문의 지니계수 보정 방식을 통해 미국의 지니계수 보정정도와 한국의 지니계수 보정정도를 비교하였고, 한국의 보정정도가 미국에 비해 상대적으로 매우 크게 나타난다는 것을 확인하였다. 이는 다른 국가들에 비해 한국의 지니계수 왜곡 정도가 크다는 것을 시사한다. 따라서 OECD국가들 간 지니계수를 비교할 때 기존의 일반적 방식인 단순 지니계수 비교 대신 본 논문에서 제시된 보정된 지니계수를 이용하는 것이 더 적합할 수 있다.

Various antibiotics, that could induce the appearance of resistant microorganisms, have been used for treatment or prevention of bacterial diseases in marine and ornamental fish. We determined and characterized the level of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and proportion of multi-drug resistant bacteria in intestinal microflora of both marine fish cultured in Korea and imported ornamental freshwater fish. For this the bacterial species and resistance to antibiotics were investigated in intestine of rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus cultured in Korea and pearl gourami Trichogaster leeri imported from Singapore to characterise. Although the bacterial species were different, proportions of resistant bacteria to single antibiotics or multi-drug were higher in intestinal microflora of pearl gourami Trichogaster leeri imported from Singapore than in rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus cultured in Korea. These results indicate that various antibiotics have been being used before trading without measures in the market of asian ornamental fishes, providing high risks for the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria.
Pearl Gourami (Trichogaster leeri)로부터 분리한 Iridovirus의 유전적 특성과 병원성 분석

본 연구에서는 비장 내의 비대해진 세포 존재와 조직 괴사라는 병리조직학적 관찰에 의하여 우리 나라의 pearl gourami (Trichogaster leeri)에서 iridovirus에 의한 자연 감염이 나타남을 확인하였다. 이러한 iridovirus 감염을 더욱 정확하게 진단하기 위해서 iridovirus 감염 진단에 주로 사용되는 MCP와 ATPase gene 부위에서 2 primer sets를 제작하여 PCR을 실시한 결과, PCR 생성물은 기대한 size와 부합하게 나타났고, MCP gene 부위의 염기서열은 reference strain인 ISKNV와 매우 높은 유사성 (99.6%)을 보였다. 공격 실험을 통하여 pearl gourami에서 분리된 iridovirus의 병원성을 확인하였고, 무분별한 관상어 관리에 의하여 관상어로부터 양식어류에로의 질병 전이가 나타남으로서 일어날 수 있는 국내 양식 산업에 대한 위험성을 제시하였다. In the survey of the samples infected by iridovirus, we found the natural outbreak of iridovirus disease in the ornamental fish, pearl gourami (Trichogaster leeri) in Korea. It was characterized by the appearance of enlarged cells and necrosis in the observation of the imprinted spleen cells under iridovirus. To determine the infection of iridovirus more accurately, PCR using 2 different primer sets for MCP and ATPase gene used for the diagnosis of iridovirus infection was done and found the produced fragments matched with the size of expectation. Partially determined nucleotide sequences of the MCP gene of the iridovirus isolated in this study showed very high homology (99.6%) with that of ISKNV as a reference strain. In challenge experiment with the iridovirus isolated from the moribund of pearl gourami, the pathogenicity of the isolated iridovirus was confirmed and suggested the potential of the risk associated the transfer of iridovirus from the ornamental fishes to the marine culturing fishes.
