Vol.32 No.1
This research examines the influence of the way to present the main product and bonus product of bonus pack promotion on consumer evaluation. Most prior research on bonus pack compares consumer preference for bonus pack and price discount, and tests factors affecting the relative preference for bonus pack. However, little attention has been directed to the factors affecting preference for bonus pack promotion itself. The purpose of this research is to test the framing effects in bonus pack in terms of the influence of (1) presentation of the main and bonus products and (2) composition of products in bonus pack promotion. First, this research tests the presentation effect of the bonus pack of the same total acquisition utility. Specifically, it is hypothesized that the bonus pack that is presented as “buy one big size product, get two small products for free (1+2 bonus pack)” is preferred to the same promotion presenting “buy two small size products and get one big size product for free (2+1 bonus pack).” Theoretical explanation about the framing effect is based on the changes in reference point and its influence on the evaluation of the bonus product. Study 1 supported this prediction on the effect of the presentation framing. Second, Study 2, extending the results of Study 1, tested consumer preference for four different types of product compositions of bonus pack including “buy one big size product, get one big product for free (1+1 bonus pack)” and “buy two small size products, get two small products for free (2+2 bonus pack).” Several theories that explain and predict the bonus pack composition effect were tested in Study 2 and the results are consistent with the reference dependent bonus product evaluation that is proposed by this paper.
