We report a case of a 51-year-old woman with Evans syndrome (autoimmune hemolytic anemia and primary immune thrombocytopenia) and hypothyroidism. She was previously diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis in 1994 (age, 35) and autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) 3 years ago. She was treated with oral prednisolone. After a period, in which the anemia waxed and waned, there was an abrupt development of thrombocytopenia (nadir 15×109/L) that coincided with the tapering off of prednisolone after 3 years of administration. Because her thrombocytopenia was refractory to prednisolone, we administered rituximab (375 mg/m^2 weekly) for 4 weeks. Two weeks after the completion of the rituximab treatment, her platelet count was up to 92×109/L. No intermittent peaking of thyroid stimulating hormone occurred after rituximab treatment was initiated. Evans syndrome and autoimmune thyroiditis might share common pathophysiological mechanisms. This notion supports the use of rituximab in a patient suffering from these disorders.

This study was carried out to investigate the eating habits and preference of snacks for students in Chungnam province. Questionnaires were collected from 333 students, which were divided into male and female, food nutrition majors and non-majors, and weight groups according to BMI. The results obtained were as follows; 1. 62.8% of students responded that they were healthy. A significant difference on the health question was found between male and female students (p<.05). Male students responded more positively to the question related to health than the females, saying they felt healthy (71.1%). There was no significance between the different majors, but a significant difference was found in weight groups compared to normal groups (p<.05). 2. 72.1% of respondents enjoyed omnivorous meals. The significant differences were not found in gender groups and major groups. However, there was a significant difference between the weights of the students (p<.01). 3. Most of the students liked sweet foods (42.3%). The significant difference was found in gender groups for food tastes. The male students preferred spicy foods (37.0%), but the females preferred sweet foods (49.5%). Taste for the major and weight groups was not significantly different. 4. 50.5% of respondents answered that they frequently ate snacks. The significance was found in gender groups (p<.01). The females had a higher intake of snacks than the males. The significant difference for taste was not shown in the major group, but was found in the weight groups (p<.05). 5. Students preferred snacks and candy (16.8%). The males liked dairy products (19.3%), while the females preferred snacks and candy (23.7%). Students majoring in food nutrition have a tendency to prefer snacks (32.1%). Appropriate calorie intake and desirable eating habits should be recommended for healthy control and maintenance of students through eating nutritionally balanced foods.

The purpose of this study was to compare the health status of South Korea with those of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and examine the trends. Position vAlue for Relative Comparison (PARC) was used as a gauge for comparison, and five sectors of the health care system were measured: demand, supply, accessibility, quality, and cost. The Mann-Kendall test was used as a statistical analysis method to examine trend of PARC values obtained from 2000 to recent years. According to the results, the demand, supply, accessibility, and quality sectors were higher than the OECD average, while the cost was lower than the average. However, there is a recent trend of sharp increases in health care costs. Some indicators: health employment, quality of primary care and mental health care were lower than the OECD average, and health determinants showed a worsening trend. Therefore, policy-makers need to take this into account and make efforts for sustainable health care.

Background: In this study, consultations with children of young patients with cancer were evaluated by dividing the child’s age into infancy, childhood, and adolescence to ensure the necessity and importance of appropriate intervention, coordination, and communication. Methods: From June 2017 to February 2019, medical records and consultation records were reviewed by selecting suitable cases among patients hospitalized in hospice palliative care unit at a Pusan national university Yangsan hospital. The consultation was conducted on several occasions by nurses, doctors and social workers from the time the patient was hospitalized to the day before death. Results: The cases of consultation were as follows: female patient with stomach cancer with a child in infancy, patient with gastric cancer with a child in childhood, and male patient with rectal cancer with a child in adolescence. Conclusion: It is ideal for parents to initiate communication with their children on their terminal status, so multidisciplinary teams must first support the motivation. In consultations with children, we should first explain the information about the cancer status of the parents, followed by the future clinical course, estimated life expectancy, and changes related to terminal status. Additionally, we must attempt to manage the psychological and emotional concerns of children. This study may support the creation of an atmosphere for in-depth research on family interviews of young patients with cancer in Korea. We think that this will contribute as basic data for some guidelines for communication based on the age of children in consultations with patients with terminal cancer.
