코로나19로 확대된 반중·반미·반일 정서와 담화특징 연구: 신문사설 헤드라인을 중심으로
신진원 담화·인지언어학회 2022 담화와 인지 Vol.29 No.2
This study aims to explore discursive characteristics of the representation of negative sentiments toward China, the United States, and Japan in Korean newspaper headlines published during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. To this end, it (i) investigates the criteria for and types of evaluative words adopted to express negative sentiments toward the three nations, (ii) explores differences in rhetorical characteristics that reveal the editorial positions favored by the news agencies, and (iii) discusses how the political ideologies of the news agencies are affecting the types of negative attitudes they express toward these three nations. Based on the appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White (2005), this paper analyzes editorial headlines from two major Korean daily newspapers, Chosun Ilbo and Hankyoreh, which have been chosen as respective representatives of conservative and progressive newspapers. The result of the analysis suggests that the ideological orientations of the newspapers tend to influence which nation becomes a target of negative evaluations and which strategy is adopted to reach these conclusions. Also, it shows that the intensity and frequency of these evaluations are reflective of the overall sentiments of our society.
Long-Term Survival after Wide Resection of Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of the Chest Wall
신진원,장용진,조덕곤,최시영 대한흉부외과학회 2019 Journal of Chest Surgery (J Chest Surg) Vol.52 No.1
Primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the chest wall is extremely rare and is characterized by aggressive features, including a high incidence of local recurrence and distant metastasis. Surgical resection of the chest wall is the primary modality of management. However, surgical treatment is not generally recommended in patients with evidence of distant metastasis. Here, we present a case of chest wall MFH along with a schwannoma mimicking distant metastasis in the right upper arm. The patient was treated by radical en bloc resection and survived for more than 9 years without recurrence.

Background: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the appropriateness of the stage migration of stage IIA non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the seventh edition of the tumor, node, and metastasis classification for lung cancer to stage IIB lung cancer in the eighth edition, and to identify prognostic factors in patients with eighth-edition stage IIB disease. Methods: Patients with eighth-edition stage IIB disease were subclassified into those with seventh-edition stage IIA disease and those with seventh-edition stage IIB disease, and their recurrence-free survival and disease-specific survival rates were compared. Risk factors for recurrence after curative resection were identified in all included patients. Results: Of 122 patients with eighth-edition stage IIB NSCLC, 101 (82.8%) had seventh-edition stage IIA disease and 21 (17.2%) had seventh- edition stage IIB disease. Nonsignificant differences were observed in the 5-year recurrence-free survival rate and the 5-year disease-specific survival rate between the patients with seventh-edition stage IIA disease and those with seventh-edition stage IIB disease. Visceral pleural invasion was a significant risk factor for recurrence in patients with eighth-edition stage IIB NSCLC. Conclusion: The stage migration from seventh-edition stage IIA NSCLC to eighth-edition stage IIB NSCLC was appropriate in terms of oncological outcomes. Visceral pleural invasion was the only prognostic factor in patients with eighth-edition stage IIB NSCLC.

The study aims to investigate how text producers use linguistic and visual resources to represent their ideologies and persuade their potential readers. Specifically, it focuses on two Korean newspapers, Chosunilbo and Hankyoreh, and their contrasting positions on the South Korean government's COVID-19 measures during December 2020. The study examines how these newspapers shape their positions on the government's policies, grounded in van Dijk’s ideological cognition. In other words, Chosunilbo views the government as an outgroup, which is often labeled as "THEM." This implies that Chosunilbo tends to criticize government policies and evoke negative emotions in readers. Conversely, Hankyoreh views the government as an in-group, denoted as 'US,' indicating a tendency to support or legitimize government policies. The research result highlights that both newspapers use linguistic and visual resources to evoke emotional responses in readers. Chosunilbo aims to generate emotions like concern, dissatisfaction, and anger, while Hankyoreh seeks readers' cooperation and likely aims to elicit positive emotions or support. Another finding indicates that linguistic and visual resources work in a systematic collaboration, shaping the emotional and affective impact on readers. This suggests that both headlines and images contribute to the overall persuasion strategies employed by these newspapers.
Predicting Temperature Loads in Open Car Parks of Piloti Structures Exposed to Real Fire Accidents
신진원,이한솔,민정기,최인락,최성모 한국강구조학회 2022 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.22 No.6
This paper presents a study to numerically predict fi re loads for open car parks of piloti structures subjected to real fi re accidents involving car fi res and to provide a basis for performance-based fi re-resistant design of buildings. Numerical models to simulate the fi re in open car parks were built using a computational fl uid dynamics (CFD) code, fi re dynamic simulator (FDS). A validation study for the CFD modeling methodology of the fi re model was performed using previous experimental and analytical studies. Fire scenarios for open car parks subjected to fi re and the corresponding simulation matrix were established based on the validated numerical model in consideration of design parameters including the fi re source, arrangement of vehicles, structural planning, and material characteristics. Results for the considered fi re scenarios in the open car parks were provided using the parametric numerical results, with an emphasis on distributions of temperatures and fi re durations.

The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between the collective perspective of Korean society towards overseas adopted Koreans and the language choices used by journalists. The study also aims to explore how this perspective relates to the key issues identified in previous humanistic and sociological research on adopted Koreans. To achieve this goal, the paper analyzes the headlines of 11 Korean newspapers published over a period of two decades, using van Leeuwen’s discourse analysis model to bridge content and linguistic analysis at the text level. The findings of the study reveal that the discourse surrounding adopted Koreans involves multiple social actors including the adoptees themselves, their country of birth, their biological families, and other stakeholders. It also shows that Korean society collectively recognizes that the Korean government or society should take responsibility for the overseas adoptees. Furthermore, the research findings align with previous sociological studies on the overseas adoptees, as well as research exploring fictional portrayals of adoption in movies and novels. Overall, this study sheds light on how Korean society perceives and talks about the adopted Koreans, and how this perspective is linked to some major issues raised by the other research on the adoptees.
