Objectives: This study was conducted to assess the association between level of physical activity and depressive symptoms among Korean male workers. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed and anthropometric measurements were conducted with 1,379 male workers during a general health check. From this data, we identified the general characteristics, levels of physical activity(IPAQ), and depressive symptoms(CES-D) of the study population. We conducted univariate logistic regression to verify the variables that affect depressive symptoms and multivariate logistic regression to calculate odds ratios. Results: Among the 1,379 male workers, 43.4% were in the insufficiently active group(IPAQ category 1) and 22.8% were in the depressive symptom group($CES-D{\geq}16$). The odds ratio(OR) for depressive symptoms was statistically higher in the insufficiently active group, workers aged over 30, the shift work group, and the unmarried group. Adjusted for those variables, the ORs for depressive symptoms were found to be 1.45(95% CI=1.25-2.11), 1.15(OR=1.15, 95% CI=1.08-1.99) and 1.75(95% CI=1.48-2.02), for the insufficiently active group, workers aged over 30, and the shift work group, respectively. Conclusions: We found physical inactivity, age, marital status, and shift work to be associated with depressive symptoms among male workers. This study supports the suggestion that physical activity can be helpful to reduce depressive symptoms among workers.

Objectives: We checked hepatitis A virus antibody(anti-HAV IgG) and hepatitis B virus antibody(HBsAb) in three large companies. The result could be a guideline to establish proper health policy for Hepatitis A and B virus preventive plan in company. Methods: We investigated the seroprevalence of anti-HAV IgG and HBsAb, and demographic characteristics of employee volunteer in three companies in southern area of Korea. Company was divided three according to health policy for hepatitis A and B. Results: The seroprevalence rate of anti-HAV IgG in company A, B, and C was 53.6%, 25.8%, and 17.7%(P<0.001), respectively. The seroprevalence rate of HBsAb in workplace A, B, and C was 79.7%, 82.4%, and 70.9%(P<0.001), respectively. Anti-HAV IgG showed more considerable difference among the companies. Conclusions: The results confirmed that low rate of IgG anti-HAV and HBsAb, particularly in the company that had low level of hepatitis education and vaccination program. This study was important for establishing hepatitis education policies, to prevent and control outbreaks in companies.
부산, 경남 일부 지역 주민들의 생선 섭취량과 혈중 수은 농도의 관련성

Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify the relationship between fish consumption and blood mercury levels in a sample of adult Koreans. Methods: The study subjects were 299 residents of Busan (male: 65, female: 234) and 185 residents of Namhae (male: 69, female: 116), South Korea. Demographic characteristics, current smoking, current drinking, fish consumption per week, past history of amalgam treatment, and residential district were recorded by trained interviewers in June and July, 2009. We considered a portion of fish to be equivalent to 70 gm weight, and calculated amounts of fish consumed per week. Using chi-square tests, t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis, we estimated the relationships between blood mercury levels and amount of fish consumed per week and other factors. Results: The mean blood mercury level of our subjects was 6.61 ${\mu}g/L$, higher than the criterion defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (5.8 ${\mu}g/L$). In multiple linear regression analysis, residential district and amount of fish consumed per week were associated with blood mercury levels. However, marital status, current drinking, and gender, and age were not associated with blood mercury levels. Conclusions: In conclusion, we suggest the implementation of systematic and periodic population-based studies to decrease the risks of mercury poisoning among South Koreans who consume fish as a regular part of the diet. 본 연구는 직업적으로 수은에 노출되지 않는 일반 인구 군에서 생선 섭취량과 혈중 수은 농도 사이의 관련성을 파악하기 위하여 수행되었다. 이를 위하여 부산광역시 2개 동과 남해군 3개 마을에 거주하는 사람들 중 본 연구 참여에 동의한 484(남자: 134명, 여자: 350명)명을 최종 연구대상으로 하였다. 설문조사는 2009년 6월 말부터 7월초까지 연구 참여 희망자들을 대상으로 훈련된 조사자가 면접설문조사를 실시하였다. 설문 조사의 주요 내용은 성별, 연령, 학력, 결혼상태, 직업, 현재 흡연 여부, 현재 음주 여부, 일주일간 생선 섭취량, 아말감 치료, 거주지역 등이었다. 단변량 분석에서 성별, 나이, 결혼상태, 현재 음주 여부, 일주일간의 생선 섭취량, 그리고 거주지역이 혈중 수은 농도와 유의한 관련성이 있었다. 혈중 수은 농도를 종속 변수로 한 다중선형회귀분석에서 일주일간의 생선 섭취량, 그리고 거주지역이 혈중 수은 농도와 유의한 관련성이 있었다. 생선 섭취량과 혈중 수은 농도 간에는 통계적으로 유의한 관련성이 있다. 앞으로 혈중 수은 농도와 건강 장애간의 관련성을 비롯한 추가적인 연구를 통하여 생선 섭취와 연관된 수은 노출 기준, 실제적인 생선 내 수은 잔류 기준, 생선 섭취빈도와 생선 섭취량에 관한 여러 가지 권고안들을 마련하기 위한 근거 기반을 마련해야 할 것이다.

Objectives: Alongside smoking, occupational exposure is an important risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors associated with occupational pulmonary function decline that can be used to create guidelines for the health management of shipyard workers Materials: This study analyzed spirometry from 10,597 male shipbuilding workers. Functional decline in spirometry was defined as FEV1/FVC <70% and logistic regression for work duration and occupational hazard exposure was performed Results: Among the subjects, 4.2% showed an obstructive pattern in pulmonary function. The odds ratios for hazard exposure were 1.67(indirect) and 3.54(direct), and for work duration 1.97(10-18 years), 2.29(19-27), and 5.02(28+). After adjusting for smoking and work-related factors, the odds ratios for work durations of over 10 years were 1.73(10-18 years), 1.99(19-27), and 4.09(28+), but for hazards exposure was 1.71(direct) alone after adjustment. Conclusions: Occupational COPD is insidious and chronic, and thus long-term hazard exposed(especially over 10 years) shipyard workers with functional decline in spirometry need to prevent and manage COPD. This study is important for establishing guidelines to manage hazard exposure among shipyard workers and prevent COPD

청력에 대한 연령과 소음 노출의 영향에 관한 5년간 청력역치 변화

Objectives: This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of noise exposure and aging on changes in hearing threshold level and the relationship between age and noise. Materials: The author selected 274 male shipyard and assembly line workers as the noise exposed group and 582 males not exposed to noise as the general population group. Data were collected from five years of consecutive annual audiometric tests performed from 2008 to 2012. Results: In the general population and noise exposed groups, there was a reverse phenomenon that hearing threshold level for 2009 was lower than that of 2008, which seemed to be due to the learning effect, but from 2010 hearing threshold level increased. In the noise exposed group, the mean hearing threshold level in the left ear was significantly higher than that for right ear. In the general population group, the older was the age, the higher was the hearing threshold level, especially at 4000 Hz. In the general population and noise exposed groups, frequency, age group and noise exposure independently affected hearing threshold level, and there was no relationship between age and noise exposure. Over all frequencies, the change of hearing threshold level was larger in the noise exposed group than in the general population group. In the noise exposed group below thirty years old, the change at 4000 Hz was remarkable. Conclusions: Age and noise exposure seem to affect hearing threshold level independently and contribute to an additive effect on hearing threshold level.
