$Li_4Mn_5O_{12}$ was synthesized by combustion method using $LiNO_3$, $Li(CH_3COO){\cdot}2H_2O$ and $Mn(CH_3COO)_2{\cdot}4H_2O$. $Li_4Mn_5O_{12}$ was obtained over $400^{\circ}C$, however, the sample calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ for any time was mixed phases of $Li_4Mn_5O_{12}$ and $Mn_2O_3$. $Li_4Mn_5O_{12}$ calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ for 5 h had larger first discharge capacity (41.5mAh/g) at 1C-rate for 3.7~4.4V than other calcined samples. Moreover, applying to hybrid capacitor, it had good discharge capacity (24.74 mAh/g or 10.46 mAh/cc) at 100 mA/g for 1~2.5 V and higher energy density (39Wh/kg or 16.49Wh/cc) at same condition.

Vol.10 No.1
In order to investigate the effects of particle size and specific surface area(BET area) of spinel powder, $LiMn_2O_4$ were synthesized using metal oxide precursor by co-precipitation method(CoP) and solid state reaction (SSR) .X-ray diffraction(XRD) patterns revealed that the both prepared powder has a well developed spinel structure with Fd3m space group. The $LiMn_2O_4$ prepared by co-precipitation showed spherical morphology with narrow size distribution. However, the $LiMn_2O_4$ prepared by solid state reaction showed relatively smaller particles with irregular shape. The measured BET areas of the powers are $0.8m^2g^{-1}$ (CoP) and $3.6m^2g^{-1}$(SSR). The electrochemical performance of the Prepared $LiMn_2O_4$ powders was evaluated using coin type cells(CR2032) at elevated temperature ($55^{\circ}C$). The $LiMn_2O_4$ prepared by co-precipitation showed the better cycling performance(82.3%capacity retention at $50^{th}$ cycle) than that of the $LiMn_2O_4$(68.3%) prepared by solid state reaction at elevated temperature.

Li-Mn spinel (LiMn2O4) is prepared by a hydrothermal process with K-Birnessite (KxMnO2·yH2O) as a precursor. The K-Birnessite obtained via a hydrothermal process with potassium permanganate [KMnO4] and urea [CO(NH2)2] as starting materials are converted to Li-Mn spinel nanoparticles reacting with LiOH. The molar ratio of LiOH/K-Birnessite is adjusted in order to find the effect of the ratio on the structural, morphological and electrochemical performances of the Li-Mn spinel. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and thermogravimetry (TG) are used to investigate the crystal structure and morphology of the samples. Galvanostatic charge and discharge are carried out to measure the capacity and rate capability of the Li-Mn spinel. The capacity shows a maximum value of 117 mAhg-1 when the molar ratio of LiOH/K-Birnessite is 0.8 and decreases with the increase of the ratio. However the rate capability is improved with the increase of the ratio due to the reduction of the particle size.

Silicon nanoparticles have attracted a great deal of scientific interests due to its intense photoluminescence in the visible spectral region and its potential applications in biological fluorescence maker, RGB (red, green, blue) display, photonics and photovoltaics etc. Practical applications making use of optical and physicochemical properties of Si nanoparticles requires an efficient synthetic method which allows easy modulation of their size, size distribution as well as surface functionalities etc. In this study, a one-pot solution reduction scheme is attempted to prepare alkyl-terminated Si nanoparticles (<10 nm) with Si precursors, (Octyl)SiCl3 or mixture of(Octyl)SiCl3 and SiCl4, containing alkyl-groups using Na(naphthalide) as reducing agent. The surface capping of Si nanoparticles with octyl-groups as well as Si nanoparticle formation was achieved in one-pot reaction. The hexane soluble Si nanoparticles with octyl-termination were in the range of 2-10 nm by TEM and some oxide groups (Si-O-Si) was present on the surface by EDS/FTIR analyses. The optical properties of Si nanoparticles measured by UV-vis and PL evidenced that photoluminescent Si nanoparticles with alkyl-termination was successfully synthesized by solution reduction of alkyl-containing Si precursors in one-pot reaction.
