The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) by severe acute syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) occurs the unprecedented pandemic during recent two years and the WHO declared a global pandemic of COVID-19 in March 2020. The most common sampling sites in COVID-19 test are the oropharynx and nasopharynx. We recently encountered a total laryngectomee who had a positivity COVID-19 diagnostic test from the tracheostoma, on the other hand, false negativity from the nasal cavity. The meaning of this case is that accurate screening test could be achieved by performing a test through the tracheostoma as well as nasal cavity or oropharynx. We also would like to discuss the accurate testing methods of patients whose airflow has distorted due to surgery, the management method of these patients, and the need of further research in the COVID-19 pandemic period with relevant literature reviews.

A cyst in the accessory parotid gland (APG) is extremely rare, with only three cases havingbeen reported recently in English literature. They were all treated with sclerotherapy, where acyst may appear as a painless superficial mass in the mid-cheek area. In sclerotherapy, themost commonly used materials are ethanol and OK-432, which report good therapeutic resultsfor the treatment of benign cervical cystic mass. An 85-year-old man came to our clinic withsuperficial, well-margined ovoid mass on the left cheek. The mass was diagnosed as a benigncyst in APG through imaging studies and core needle biopsy. We performed the ultrasoundguidedpercutaneous ethanol injection and the cyst disappeared, leaving only the fused cysticwall. We report this very rare and interesting case with a literature review.

Sialectasis can occur as a consequence of stone, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, trauma, surgery and radioactive iodine treatment etc. The clinical features and symptoms are various depending on the location and size of the dilated salivary duct. The dilated distal Stensen’s duct may appear as a cheek mass. The idiopathic multiple sialectasis is relative rare and few cases are reported so far. A 83-year-old male who visited our clinic with cheek mass and finally diagnosed as multiple sialectasis in Stensen’s duct. We report an interesting and didactic case with a review of relevant literature.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare subtype of B-cell neoplasm and it accounts for about 3~6% of all non-Hodgkin s lymphomas. It occurs mainly in middle-aged or elderly man, involving the extra-nodal sites such as gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow and Waldeyer’s ring. The incidence of the MCL in salivary gland is about 3%. The blastoid MCL is a rare variant and it has a very aggressive clinical course. It is extremely rare to be arising from the parotid gland. To our knowledge, similar case has not been reported in domestic literature, one case has been described in English literature. We experienced a rare and unique disease entity and report it with brief literature review.

Calcific tendinitis of the longus colli muscle (CTLC) is an inflammatory disease caused by the deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystal in longus colli muscle and its tendon. The incidence of it is rare, only a few cases have been reported so far, and its common symptoms and sings were neck pain, limitation of neck motion, dysphagia and odynophagia and so on. Clinically, it can be masqueraded as retropharyngeal abscess on account of its non-specific clinical presentations and rare incidence. We encountered a 39-year-old woman with five days duration of progressive bilateral neck pain, limitation of neck motion that was finally diagnosed as retropharyngeal abscess accompanied by the CTLC. We report this rare and didactic case with a brief review of relevant literature.

Herniation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) into the external auditory canal is rare asTMJ and external auditory canal are separated by an anterior bony wall of external auditorycanal. The bony defect of the anterior external auditory canal can be caused by trauma, otologicprocedure, neoplasm, inflammation and a rare congenital bony defect. Conservativetreatment is available if the severity of the symptom is mild or asymptomatic. However, surgicalprocedure is considered if the patient experiences severe distress. There have been no reportedcases of surgical-related complications and recurrence during postoperative follow-upperiod. Herein we report the very first case of foreign body prolapse involving herniation fromTMJ extending into the external auditory canal.

Auricular hematoma is a condition in which blood is formed within the space between the perichondrium and the cartilage. This condition occurs as a result of auricle being subjected to blunt trauma and can lead to infection, cartilage necrosis, contracture, and neocartilage formation. The various treatment strategies used to treat this condition - needle aspiration, intralesional steroid injection, and incision and drainage with compression - point to an ambiguous understanding of how auricular hematomas develop. Intracartilagenous auricular hematoma, in particular, is a rare condition in which the hematoma’s location is within the auricular cartilage itself. Because the hematoma occurs within the cartilage, this condition requires more aggressive surgical treatment in order to prevent recurrence and development of secondary deformities. The authors report and review two such cases of intracartilagenous auricular hematoma which have been treated by deroofing surgery.

The etiology of laryngeal hemangioma is unclear, and it is classified into infant and adult types. The former is capillary hemangioma and relatively common, the latter is cavernous type and very rare. The adult laryngeal hemangioma mainly occurs in supraglottis and glottis. A 75-year-old man came to our clinic with a voice change that started four months ago. The laryngoscopic finding showed that the surface of oval-shaped mass is covered with turbid exudates. We performed the laryngeal microsurgery with CO2 laser. The mass was pathologically proven as cavernous hemangioma. We report a very rare and didactic case with review of relevant literature.

Primary malignant lesions in the external auditory canal are rare. While squamous cell carcinomais the most common of these lesions, there are also basal cell carcinoma, malignant melanomaand adenocarcinoma, etc. However, squamous cell carcinoma in situ of the externalauditory canal is extremely rare since its first report in the English literature in 1953 and hasnot been reported in Korea. Its clinical manifestations are very similar to chronic ear disease. For treatment, local wide resection of the lesions is preferred. We recently encountered a54-year-old female, who presented with intermittent irritating sensation in the external auditorycanal. Otoscopic examination showed a scaly plaque with the irregular surface on the anteroinferiorportion of the left external auditory canal. Excisional biopsy revealed a squamouscell carcinoma in situ. We report this very rare and unique case with a literature review.

Amyloidosis is defined as a deposit of amyloid substance. While it rarely occurs in the head and neck region, it is most commonly found in the larynx. Laryngeal amyloidosis can occur in the false vocal cord, ventricle, and glottis etc. The typical feature of laryngeal amyloidosis is a round yellowish submucosal mass. A 72-year-old male presented with voice change that began a couple of years ago. The rigid laryngoscopy showed a whitish patch in the medial and supe- rior surfaces of the left true vocal fold. He was pathologically diagnosed with amyloidosis by laryngeal microsurgery. With a relevant review of literature, we report this case as it demon- strates rare, atypical features of laryngeal amyloidosis.
