This paper presents a concise description of concepts and its logical adaptations for the development of vibration theory during the evolution of dynamics in the eighteenth century. With the mathematical modelings originated from Leibniz’ insight on the equivalence between sound and vibration, Taylor's assumptions for the string geometry and mechanics, Johann Bernoulli's discrete models, D'Alembert's partial differential equation for the vibrating string, and Euler's “the First Principles of Mechanics”, the basic ideas about vibration analysis in that century were formed and developed as the rational mechanics. The “Pendulum Conditions” derived from the static equilibrium state of the system for small vibrations are investigated comparing with the calculation of eigenvalues today. A 80 year lasting controversy erupted in the mid 1700s brought to an end through the proof of Fourier series resulting the expansion of functional concept in relation to the falsehood of the “Article of Faith” for the physical behaviors and confirming the “Principle of Superposition” by Daniel Bernoulli, which is nowadays a powerful mathematical tool for the harmonic analysis.

This paper presents a historical study on the derivation of the differential equation of motion for the single-degree-of-freedom m-k system with the harmonic excitation. It was Euler for the first time in the history of vibration theory who tackled the equation of motion for that system analytically,then gave the solution of the free vibration and described the resonance phenomena of the forced vibration in his famous paper E126 of 1739. As a result of the chronological progress in mechanics like pendulum condition from Galileo to Euler, the author asserts two conjectures that Euler could apply to obtain the equation of motion at that time.

A method for designing high speed spindle is presented in order to enhance the machining accuracy in consideration of vibration characteristics. Experimetal evaluations of the spindle HS 430 as a prototype are made efficiently with the help of bending vibration modes for nonrotational and rotationalstate comparing with the commercial spindle V430. As a result the spindle of HS 430 shows the superior performance than that of V 430.

The Benz Patent Motorwagen was the first automobile with a practical four-stroke one-cylinder engine and a carriage-like three-wheeler with tubular framework. It incorporated some essential elements that would characterize the modern vehicles. This paper presents the design investigation with the calculations and modelings for simulation of driveline, frame and suspension spring in consideration of vehicle dynamics. As a result, it would be uncomfortable for a long traveling and unstable for the steering manoeuverability, though the Motorwagen was designed as being stiff for the driving conditions in those days.

In general, a cooling tower has two major noise sources, one is the fan and the other is the falling water. The fan noise is produced by passage of its blades through the air and radiates from the fan stack. Noises from the falling water are caused by splashing and dropping of water cascading over the internal filler of the cooling tower and into the basin and radiate from the louvered face. In this paper, the noise measurements and its frequency analysis are carried out for the locations facing the louvered side and near the fan stack referring the related code and standards in order to study the noise characteristics of the induced-draft cooling tower, especially for the buildings. As a result, it is found that for every doubling of distance from the noise source the noise level decreases by 2~4dBA in the near field with reflect surfaces and decreases by about 6dBA also in the far field without reflect surfaces. As a supplement to the noise measurements, a computer program with simple algorithm is developed in order to estimate the noise level at a distance from the cooling tower, so that the user could apply and modify it for the particular boundary conditions easily.

교각을 가지는 우니버셜 조인트로 연결된 구동축이 회전할때 차량(예로 트럭)의 구동계에는 회전수의 2배의 주파수 특성을 갖는 굽힘 및 비틀림 진동이야기되며, 이들 진동은 소음이나 진동의 형태로 전달된다. 차량의 어떤 일정한 속도역에서 Cab의 벽에서는 진동원인 구동축게에서 전달된 여길고 공진이 발생되어 이로인한 소음이 Cab의 벽으로부터 방사된다. 따라서, 본 학술강연에서는 상용차 구동축계의 기구학적 특성에 따른 비틀림 진동의 거동만을 고찰하여 Cab의 진동 및 소음의 발생메카니즘을 해석하였고, 예제로서 속도역 65 ~ 75 ㎞/h 에서 상용차 11 톤급의 구동축계의 진동발생원인과 그 영향을 비교분석하였다. 결과로서, Cab 에서의 불쾌한 소음은 주로 액슬-디퍼렌셜 근처 구동축계의 유니버셜 조인트의 교각의 변화 - 판상 스프링의 설치 공차에 의하여 피할수 없음 - 에 의한 것 임이 밝혀졌다.
