        SLA Principles and Computer-Mediated Communication Pedagogy

        As CMC becomes part of English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching, FFL professionals in Korea need to understand and critically examine its practical classroom applications based on a solid knowledge about how second languages are learned. The purpose of this article is to give EFL teachers a guide to CMC research that is readily applicable to classroom practice. The scope is intentionally limited to research concerned with evaluating the potential benefits and disadvantages of CMC in terms of currently most influential SLA principles including learner autonomy, affective factors, negotiation of meaning, collaborative learning, culture acquisition, and critical theory. The findings stemming from the existing body of CMC research are critically examined and pedagogical suggestions are offered for the benefit of EFL teachers.

        Designing and Implementing an In-service Teacher Training Program for English Teachers

        While there exists a richness of the debate about English language teaching practices, English teacher training practices have received relatively little attention. This article is an attempt to develop a framework for a non-residential in-service teacher training program and investigate successes and failures that have occurred in each phase of implementing the program. It stems from work done in 2007, on developing and implementing a curriculum and series of courses and activities as part of a non-residential in-service teacher training program. This article first discusses the rationale for and the make-up of the core component of the program, which is designed to serve two overarching purposes: (1) improving in-service English teachers’ English proficiency and (2) developing their teaching skills. The article then presents an outline of the procedures involved in the program design and implementation, discussing the main features of the program, together with an account of the trails and tribulations involved in each phase of program development. Finally, general conclusions about effective teacher training are drawn.

        A Comparative Study of the Rhetorical Moves and Communicative Functions of Journal and Thesis Abstracts

        The abstract found at the beginning of most journal articles and theses has increasingly become an essential part of academic writing and acquiring the skills of writing an abstract is therefore important to L2 novice writers to enter the discourse community of their discipline. Based on 50 professional writers’ abstracts from five international journals in applied linguistics and 50 Korean students’ abstracts from their Master’s theses in the same discipline, the present study attempts to explore similarities and differences in the rhetorical moves of abstracts as well as major communicative functions and dominant linguistic features realized in each rhetorical move between two corpora. The results showed that although there was no statistically significant difference between expert writers and student writers in the frequency and distribution of moves, the use of certain communicative functions and linguistic features realized in each move distinguished professional writers from student writers. The Korean students’ thesis abstracts contained certain functional and linguistic inadequacies which may hamper the general readability and acceptability for the scientific community. Implications of the findings for the teaching of academic writing for NNS students are presented.

        Continuous synthesis of stable ferrocene nanoparticles using a self-aligned coaxial turbulent jet mixer

        Ferrocene nanoparticles possess an outstanding characteristic as a drug delivery carrier, in being able totrigger on-demand release of drugs in a specific condition with reactive oxygen species (ROS). However,due to the limitation of the conventional bulk nanoprecipitation method, uniform and highly stablenanoparticles have still been difficult to develop. In this study, we developed device-mediated ferrocenenanoparticles (D-FNPs) with highly controlled uniform size and long-term stability through aflashnanoprecipitation method using a self-aligned coaxial turbulent jet mixer. The self-aligned coaxialturbulent jet mixer could be easily assembled using commercial tubefittings, which enabled the coaxialself-alignment offluidic parts. In addition, by utilizing diaphragm pumps and pulsation dampers for thecontrol offluidflow, the coaxial turbulent jet mixer could be operated in a fully continuous manner. Thus,the D-FNPs could be prepared in a continuous manner with a high production rate of 633 mg/min. The DFNPswere highly stable in aqueous media for 3 months. In addition, after lyophilization without anycryoprotectants, the D-FNPs exhibited stable dispersion in aqueous solution. Importantly, the D-FNPsmaintained their original outstanding ROS-responsive characteristics, while showing no cytotoxicity.

        How to Implement an Interpretive Qualitative Study: Via Exploring Graduate Students' CMC Discourse Practice

        The purpose of this article is to provide a forum for discussing an interpretive qualitative approach to second language learning and teaching. This paper focuses on investigating what are the rationales for doing qualitative research, what kinds of criteria qualitative research should meet, and how it may be implemented in a particular learning and teaching context, centering the discussion around a research project I have conducted. The interpretive qualitative research I present in this article was conducted with the aim of examining the nature of discourse practice involved in a TESOL graduate course where nonnative- and native-English-speaking graduate students negotiated meaning through CMC activities. An explanation of the rationale behind this qualitative approach is followed by a description of how data was collected and analyzed and then by a review of research findings. This overview of some of the theoretical and methodological considerations involved in conducting interpretive qualitative research suggests the complex and challenging nature of conducting these types of studies. This article concludes that successful implementation of the qualitative research into the nature of discourse practice requires an understanding of the research methodology as well as the rigor of the research procedures.

        Investigating the Use of If-conditionals in the Corpora of NS and NNS Argumentative Essays

        The purpose of the study is to investigate the use of if-conditionals in the corpora of NS and NNS argumentative essays. For this comparative study, a collection of American college students' argumentative essays and a self-compiled corpus of Korean NNS students' argumentative essays were used. First, the overall frequency of if-conditionals was examined in the two corpora. Next, the use of if-conditionals was coded by semantic categorization. Common features and major problems were also examined in the Korean NNS students' writing. The results revealed that although the overall frequency of if-conditionals in two corpora was not significantly different, the distribution of if-conditionals in three semantic categories was different. Significant differences between the two corpora were also identified in several semantic sub-categories, revealing some common features and problems that the NNS students had in their use of if-conditionals.
