        How to Implement an Interpretive Qualitative Study: Via Exploring Graduate Students' CMC Discourse Practice

        The purpose of this article is to provide a forum for discussing an interpretive qualitative approach to second language learning and teaching. This paper focuses on investigating what are the rationales for doing qualitative research, what kinds of criteria qualitative research should meet, and how it may be implemented in a particular learning and teaching context, centering the discussion around a research project I have conducted. The interpretive qualitative research I present in this article was conducted with the aim of examining the nature of discourse practice involved in a TESOL graduate course where nonnative- and native-English-speaking graduate students negotiated meaning through CMC activities. An explanation of the rationale behind this qualitative approach is followed by a description of how data was collected and analyzed and then by a review of research findings. This overview of some of the theoretical and methodological considerations involved in conducting interpretive qualitative research suggests the complex and challenging nature of conducting these types of studies. This article concludes that successful implementation of the qualitative research into the nature of discourse practice requires an understanding of the research methodology as well as the rigor of the research procedures.

        Investigating the Use of If-conditionals in the Corpora of NS and NNS Argumentative Essays

        The purpose of the study is to investigate the use of if-conditionals in the corpora of NS and NNS argumentative essays. For this comparative study, a collection of American college students' argumentative essays and a self-compiled corpus of Korean NNS students' argumentative essays were used. First, the overall frequency of if-conditionals was examined in the two corpora. Next, the use of if-conditionals was coded by semantic categorization. Common features and major problems were also examined in the Korean NNS students' writing. The results revealed that although the overall frequency of if-conditionals in two corpora was not significantly different, the distribution of if-conditionals in three semantic categories was different. Significant differences between the two corpora were also identified in several semantic sub-categories, revealing some common features and problems that the NNS students had in their use of if-conditionals.

        저예산 영화 ‘소림 축구’에 나타난 자기회복에 관한 연구

        A Study on Self-recovery in Low-budget Movie Sorim SoccerYoonhui Na & Gyeonghwa Lee Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the process of self-recovery in the movie ‘Sorim Soccer.’ Therefore, this study conducted a qualitative text analysis of the low-budget movie ‘Shorim Soccer’ as text, and through this, the self-recovery process inherent in the film was analyzed in depth. As a result of the study, the existential crisis of modern people stems from the collapse of the traditional community, which leads to the alienation of modern people. In particular, when looking at the process of self-recovery in the movie, it begins with an accidental meeting of individuals. In addition, this meeting provides a driving force for the formation of a new community through the combination of the weak and the recruitment of new members. Unlike previous studies that show that individual recovery is caused by psychological, emotional, and behavioral characteristics, this study is expected to contribute greatly to critically interpreting social phenomena by paying attention to movie texts.         Dialogism, Heteroglossia, and Carnival: Bakhtin's Concepts and their Implications for Second Language Writing

        This article builds on the idea that Bakhtin's philosophy of language can provide an extremely productive paradigm within which to conduct research and build theory in the field of second language writing. Bakhtin's conceptualization of language has encouraged first language composition researchers to explore the following four major areas of inquiries: 1) reading appropriating and resistance in student writing; 2) responding to student writing in an internally persuasive way; 3) creating a context for alterity; and 4) redefining academic genres and discourse. However, relatively few L2 writing researchers have explored the potential of the Bakhtinian perspective to its fullest extent. Drawing on a number of L1 composition an studies and a growing body of L2 writing research conducted within a Bakhtini framework, this article seeks to suggest potentially productive areas of research in the field of second language writing.

        Cohesive Devices in CMC Texts Produced by American and Korean EFL Writers

        This study presents a comparative analysis of cohesive devices employed in computer-mediated communication (CMC) texts of native speakers (NSs) and nonnative speakers (NNSs) of English. Specifically, the study focuses on the five categories of cohesive devices including reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical devices in CMC texts jointly created by Korean EFL learners and American college-level students in an intercultural CMC project. The purpose of this study is to determine the specific differences and similarities in the uses of such cohesion devices in a NS and NNS corpus of 161 CMC texts. This study also aims to identify common features and errors produced by NNSs by using samples of NSs for comparison. The analysis of common cohesive devices in NS and NNS CMC texts indicates that NNSs employ certain cohesive devices (conjunction and lexical cohesion) at significantly higher frequency rates than do NSs. It also indicates that Korean EFL learners rely on a restricted repertoire of cohesive features as well as displaying misuses of some cohesive devices in constructing CMC texts. Based on the results of the study, teaching implications for L2 writing are presented.

        Evaluating an In-service English Teacher Training Program from Multiple Perspectives

        Despite recent attempts made worldwide to address the language and pedagogical needs of non-native English teachers through in-service teacher training programs, little empirical research exists as to how effective such programs are in terms of improving English teachers’ language proficiency and teaching skills. The purpose of the study is to provide a holistic evaluation of an in-service teacher training program by assessing proficiency gains between the pre-test and the post-test as well as tracing on-going development of teaching skills through process-oriented procedures. In addition, the participants’ self-perceived evaluation of the program and their self-report on changes in language proficiency, comfort level, and teaching skills are presented. The comparison of the pre-test and post-test reveals that the participants improved their English proficiency. Development in teaching skills was also observed, and other important gains including increased overall teaching competence, higher professional self-esteem, and improved working relations were reported. The overall program was perceived positively by the participants although there were some areas for improvement. In light of the findings of the study, pedagogical implications are presented.
