To establish the protocol of a standardized exercise test for evaluating exercise intolerance and degree of fitness in Thoroughbred racehorses, we examined serum lactate concentrations related to exercise intensities using the high speed treadmill. Twelve clinically healthy Thoroughbred racehorses with or without previous training or racing history were assigned to two gorups, fit and unfit group, respectively. The protocol used for the standardized exercise test was consisted of two stages : stage of warm-up and that of acceleration. During the warm-up, the horses exercised 5 min at 1.8m/s and 3 min 3.4m/s without inclination. At the acceleration stage, exercise test was performed at 10% slope and the speed was increased from the initial 5m/s to the maximal speed which each tested horse could keep up with. The speed was increased with incremental steps of 1 m/s every minute. During the last 15 sec of each step, blood samples were collected for serum lactate determination. $V_{max}$(maximal treadmill speed which tested horses could keep up with) of the fit group ($10.93{\pm}0.33m/s$, mean${\pm}$SE, n = 6) was higher than that of the unfit group ($9.52{\pm}0.23m/s$, mean${\pm}$SE, n = 6). Serum lactate concentrations increased exponentially according to exercise intensities. $V_{La4}$(speed producing a serum lactate concentration of 4mmol/l) of the fit group, $6.45{\pm}0.26m/s$, was higher than that of the unfit group, $5.45{\pm}0.23m/s$. $La_{peak}$(peak plasma lactate concentration during the exercise test) was lower in the fit group ($20.34{\pm}1.62mmol/l$ at 1 min after maximal intensity exercise) than in the unfit group ($24.78{\pm}1.09mmol/l$ at 2 min after maximal exercise step). $t_{50%}$(time required for the recovery of lactate concentration to be one-half of $La_{peak}$ after maximal exercise) of the unfit group and the fit group were 40.0 and 18.0 min, respectively. Therefore, the protocol of the incremental standardized exercise test utilized in this study seems to be reliable for the assessment of fitness and exercise intolerance for the Thoroughbred racehorses.

The Pure Car and Truck Carrier(PCTC) is a ship for transportation of high roof type or heavy vehicles such as recreation vehicles, trucks, trailer, buses and buldozers. The loading and unloading of cargo units is carried out by Roll-on/Roll-off through the stern ramp(or side ramp). Liftable car decks are arranged between some deck levels for the purpose of flexible loading of different height of vehicles on or below the deck. Because of the reason of loading the various kind of vehicles, PCTC has become more popular than the PCC in recent years. PCTC has the structural features of the sufficient longitudinal strength and insufficient transverse racking strength due to limited number of transverse bulkhead. Following analyses have been performed in this study to confirm the structural adequacy of main structural members for 6,500 Unit Roll-On Roll-Off Car Carrier. · transverse strength analysis based on standard rule loading · entire ship structural analysis based on dynamic load analysis · spectral fatigue analysis In this second paper, the results of spectral fatigue analysis is reported.
초보자 승마운동 시 완충고삐 사용을 통한 말의 스트레스 완화에 관한 연구

During equestrian exercise, communication between riders and horses is very important, and riders’ appropriate signals without any disturbance for the horses’ proper movements are required. Therefore, horses may get different stress depending on the rider’s riding balance, posture, and proficiency. This study was conducted to confirm the difference in the stress of horses between the beginner’s riding and the expert’s riding, additionally, to prove the effectiveness of buffer rein reducing stress even when beginners ride. Average heart rate (HR) was measured for five minutes in stages with a walk, and HR variability (HRV) were measured for three minutes in stages with both rising trot and sitting trot. HRV variables include root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), standard deviation of normal to normal interval (SDNN), and ratio of low to high frequency components of a continuous series of heartbeats (low-frequency [LF]/high-frequency [HF]). The study involved 6 horses that underwent routine husbandry procedures. The average HR did not show a difference among groups in all exercise stages includes walk, rising trot, and sitting trot. RMSSDs showed lower values for the sitting trot when the beginner rides compared to the expert’s riding (p < 0.05), which means the stress was more increased when beginners ride. On the other hand, when beginners ride using buffer reins, the RMSSD was increased in all exercise stages compared to the case of using regular reins. SDNN was increased when the beginners ride using buffer reins in the rising trot (p < 0.05), which means the stress was more relieved. Ratio of low to high frequency components of a continuous series of heartbeats was not different among groups, but it showed decreased value when beginners use buffer reins rather than regular reins. In this study, it was confirmed that beginners induce more stress on horses than experts during riding exercise and that the use of the buffer reins by beginners more reduces the riding stress of horses compared to when they use regular reins.
