According to the data (table 1) Survey of underground temperature of Seoul vicinity for three years from 1964 to 1966 by The Central Meteorological Observatory, temperature of underground, 5m below ground, keeps almost the same temperature around 15℃ throughout the year, without any effect of weather. With the intention of heating and cooling the house by making use of underground temperature, I made an air control tank 5m below the ground and then built a house of 9㎡ above the air control tank which is 5m long, 1m wide, and 1m high. It was found that room temperature is about 22.3℃ while the mean temperature of open-air throughout August is 26.7℃ (table 11). The result from this research shows that controlling room temperature by making use of underground temperature will be possible.

This study aims to identify the result of experiments on the utilization of geothermal energy to residential houses and its design maintaining effective normal temperature for daily life around the year regardless of weather. In a plac 5 meters depth of the underground, a geothermal tank of 1.35(H)×1.35(D)×5.55(W) meters with the effective surface of 30.04 square meters was constructed and induced exchanged calorie, by the outside air passing through the tank, into the room of the geothermal house. A motor-fan was installed and it blew a certain amount of air from the tank into the room with an average speed of 0.7m/sec to bring about the heat transfer effect regardless of temperature gradient. A geothermal house of 2.55(H)×3.64(D)×4.44(W) meters was constructed over the geothermal tank and the wall arranged to decrease the heat transfer possibly of inside to outside air. The experiments were carried out from July to June 1972. The results as we expected, were as follows: While outside the air temperature was 15℃±14.3℃, the room temperature of the geothermal house was 15℃±5.4℃. In addition, the percentage frequency of occurrences of the daily average temperature was 10℃ to 20℃ during the experiment period, in case of the outside air temperature was 29.8%, but the room temperature of the geothermal house was 88.3% and the remainder of 11.7% was also included in 9℃ to 10℃. Therefore, it was endurable for the most of human aotivities in the geothamel house without any supplementary temperature controlling apparatus. If neccessary, a supplementary heating apparatus (heat radiating rate: 1.24 kcal/m²) may be used to raise the temperature by around 5℃ only for about 40 days from December to April following year when the temperature goes down below 10 ℃ The difference between the distribution of room temperature and the value calculated from the engineering heat transfer aspect is as the following formula: q_δ=√X·InX but X={1/4·(g_H)+(H)-115.5}×3.1 If this difference is utilized, it is possible for us to design any size of a geothermal house. If good quality of the insulation material is used in making walls, the heat of the sunshine penetrating through the window and the heat condensing apparatus are effectively utilized, if a geothermal tank is made of good materials, and if the effective surface is expended and installed in deeper place, the geothermal house will become an ideal all-weather residential house not requiring any supplementary temperature controlling apparatus certainly.
Antiviral effect of Platycodon grandiflorum extract against Influenza A(H1N1) Virus

Influenza A(H1N1) virus is a respiratory infective disease which cause three to five million severe illness and 205,000 to 500,000 deaths every year around the world, Platycodon grandiflorum(PG) which relieve cough and protects sore throat is widely used as traditional medication in oriental countries. Although PG was known to have a broad range of biological activities, the antiviral effect of PG extract on influenza virus has not been studied. In this study, we investigated antiviral effect of PG extract on influenza A virus infection in vitro, hemmagglutination with cRBC. But interestingly, non-toxic concentrations of PG extract significantly inhibited plaque formation compared with negative control when Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell were disposed of influenza A virus followed by PG extract treatment. Our results suggest that PG extract was highly effective in anti-influenza A virus infection in vitro.

Artificial reefs are widely used as important means of fishing ground creation for not only commercial fishing but also recreational fishing. The evaluation of artificial reef in this study was made based upon three steps, estimation of effective bulk void volume, catch analysis per unit reef volume and biomass estimation of attachment organisms on the reef. This method can be applied to both the evaluation for post-deployment management of the exist artificial reefs and for the preservation of fisheries resource at the artificial reef fishing grounds.

To study the supplementaing effects of kugija, Lycium chinense, in commercial diet on the immune response of nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, nonspecific immune responses were investigated. The activities of complement and lysozyme were higher in sera of the fish fed diet with kugija than control diet. The effects of kugija on vaccination of fish to Edwardsiella tarda were compared in three different vaccination methods after feeding kugija for ten weeks. Intraperitoneal injection and bath administration with formalin killed cells (FKC) and bath with extracellular products (ECP) after injection of FKC showed differences in immune responses of vaccinated fish. Bath administration with ECP after injection of FKC was more stimulated than any other methods in each of nonspecific and specific responses such as the activities of complement and lysozyme, antibody production and rosette forming cells. Moreover, cumulative mortality was significantly lower in the fish vaccinated with combination FKC and ECP after injection challenge with live E. tarda.
