        The Relationship Between Gloss Type and L2 Proficiency in Incidental Vocabulary Learning

        This study investigates the relationship between L2 proficiency and different types of glosses. Just under 330 university students in Korea were divided into higher and lower levels of English fluency, and were further divided into four gloss conditions (no-gloss, L1 gloss, L2 gloss, and L1+L2 gloss). They read passages, completed an immediate vocabulary test and a survey, and took a delayed vocabulary test after four weeks. According to the findings, the L1 gloss and the L1+L2 gloss were effective for lowerlevel learners, and the L2 gloss and the L1+L2 gloss were effective for higher-level learners. However, on the survey, the L1+L2 gloss type was the most preferred gloss type of the participants. Considering the statistical analysis of the interaction effect between L2 proficiency and gloss type together with the results of the student opinion survey, L1+L2 glosses are likely the best gloss type for reading materials at any proficiency level.

        Korean University Student Use of Phrasal and One-Word Verbs and Concordance-Based Learning.

        This study attempts to investigate the use by Korean university students of phrasal verbs and their one-word equivalents. Questions were formulated using corpus-based definition analyses on four sets of words and were given to 219 undergraduate students who were attending a university in Seoul. Results showed that the students preferred to use one-word verbs over phrasal verbs when given situations in which either could be used. It was further revealed that they did not know how to use either phrasal verbs or their one-word equivalents accurately in various contexts. A translation survey and informal interviews with randomly selected participants were carried out to explain this phenomenon. Based on these findings, pedagogical implications are discussed along with a set of teaching materials.

        국내 지방대 의예과 영어프로그램 평가 및 개선방안

        The present study investigates a medical English program in Korea in order to enhance the curriculum. Sixty-nine students completed a closed-ended questionnaire in seven areas: (a) program’s goals; (b) program’s strengths; (c) student needs; (d) teaching; (e) suggestions for improvement; (f) materials; and (g) assessment. Five professors completed an open-ended survey with the same categories. Students reported strengths as giving opportunities to communicate with the professors in the speaking courses and the chance to write in English for the writing courses, whereas professors indicated strengths as students’ high grammar and vocabulary levels. For learner needs, students indicated improving general and academic speaking for the speaking courses, and academic writing skills for the writing courses, whereas professors felt the students needed more practical speaking and writing-related skills. Regarding teaching, students reported they did small group activities, listening activities, and games in the speaking courses, and paragraph and essay writing in the writing courses. Concerning textbooks, both students and professors reported that the speaking and the intermediate-level writing textbooks were inappropriate. Regarding assessment, students preferred to be evaluated according to a variety of criteria in addition to midterms and finals. A written curriculum for the medical English program was devised based on these findings. (202 words)

        성폭력 가해 청소년에 대한 목회돌봄

        The purpose of this study was to find out the characteristics of juvenile sexual offenders as well as to suggest plans for those adolescences which have been neglected in terms of pastoral care. It is pathetic individually/socially that having teenagers are being either victims or sexual offenders. The researchers confirmed that sexual violence has been repeatedly committed by juveniles due to misusing juvenile law considered as social protection; therefore, they searched for pastoral care for prevention of sexual violence. Juvenile sexual offenders were from peer group culture. They have pressure of sexual conduct from epicureanism, mass media, and internet. Adolescences’ indiscriminate sexual conduct was due to frequent exposure of lewd media. A church ought to support pastoral care for adolescences in order to prevent sexual violence. Most of all Korean Christian churches have no enough strategies and/or method for prevention of juvenile sexual violence. Accordingly, a church should intervene for prevention positively. Preventive strategies is means of grace as Christian tradition. The means of grace means the Bible reading, worship service and praise, etc. Also, pastoral care includes TRUTH therapy as therapeutic method for juvenile sexual offenders. TRUTH therapy decrease somatic, psychological and spiritual agony by sexual violence. Also, when it comes to pastoral care for adolescences’ sexual problem, preventive education is important. Pastoral care for correction of adolescences’ wrong sexual conduct is based on the Bible. Considering juveniles as our future, we must put our every effort not to have them just live with the stigma of sexual offenders, but treat them with respect and love. Approaching those juveniles who conducted sexual violence with understanding and care is the way to come more closer to them individually. It is emphasized that active pastoral care Is necessary on this matter. This article proposed effective plans of pastoral care for preventing and correcting juvenile sexual violence conduct by examining factors and understanding those teenagers through multi-dimensional analysis.

        Investigation of Small Group Interaction in a Korean University EFL Classroom

        This paper investigates learner-learner interactions performed by Korean college students. It intends to accomplish two purposes: (a) to provide a clear picture of how learners learn from one another by assisting each other; and (b) to convince Korean college teachers who are skeptical about small group work. Nine interactions in one small group discussion session were recorded, transcribed and analyzed. Along with a cognitive-interaction analysis, a supplemental student opinion survey was also conducted in order to provide students’ perspectives towards small group discussion activities. The results showed that learners were able to assist one another in various ways, such as correction, negotiation moves, and lexical assistance. Lexical assistance was the most common strategy. More than 70% of peer assistance was taken as repair and the rest as needs-repair. Mis-correction/mis-assistance was very rare and the uptake rate of this was also low. The survey revealed that two advantages of small group work were, (a) gaining competence in speaking in English and (b) increasing comprehensibility of the content by sharing with others. The students’ most serious concern was missing mistakes, and their main suggestions were to rotate group members and to have a proficient learner as a discussion leader in a group.

        국내 지방 대학의 영어 읽기 프로그램 평가 및 개선 연구

        The current study aims to evaluate and improve a university English reading program in order to enhance students’ English reading skills. A total of 312 students and 16 professors in the program participated in the survey covering seven areas: students’ goals, the program’s strengths, student weaknesses, teaching, materials, assessment, and suggestions for improvement. Findings showed that students expressed various goals for taking reading courses. However, both students and professors agreed that the only notable strength of the program was ‘giving an opportunity to read in English.’ Students perceived that their great weaknesses in reading were lack of vocabulary and grammar, whereas professors thought their motivation to read was quite low. The two most common activities were text translation and grammar explanation. However, students preferred to learn practical expressions and English culture through reading contents. Both students and professors pointed out that current textbooks were boring and difficult. Regarding assessment, students preferred to include attendance, participation, attitude, and assignments, in addition to midterm and finals. Regarding suggestions for improvement, professors suggested teaching based on students’ proficiency levels and regular checking of instructional equipment.         학교적응력 향상을 위한 인성교육 프로그램 개발 및 효과분석 개입연구

        The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a character education program that has been developed to integrate cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of character education for the school adjustment of the elementary and secondary schoolers with school adjustment issues. This intervention study was implemented through the process from analysis of the problem, planning, data collection, integrated design, development, pilot test, evaluation and revision from March 2015 to December 2016. The needs assessment based on the literature review and expertise from the subject matter experts(SMEs) led to the key objectives of the character education program: understanding and accepting oneself and others. The program was implemented to 110 elementary and secondary students. Focus group interviews of the students and interviews of their teachers were administered. The content analysis of the interview results showed that the student participants of the program could understand and express themselves better, make closer relationships with their peers, understand others including family better and have better relationships with people, feel more comfortable and attached to schools. Also, the analysis of the teacher interviews revealed the similar results about the student changes. The teachers reported that the students became positive and optimistic, their self-esteem and emotional control ability were enhanced, they made better relationships among peer students, their absenteeism rates were reduced, their sense of belonging to school was enhanced. Based on these research results, the implication of the effects of character education program on school is discussed: the character education program could make a difference raining from in students’ inner and relational aspect, and to their school adjustment. 본 연구는 인지, 정의, 실천 측면을 함께 고려한 인성교육 프로그램을 개발하고 이를 실행해 인성교육이 학교부적응 학생들의 학교 적응에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 그 효과를 탐색적으로 규명하고자 진행되었다. 이를 위해 개입연구 방법을 활용하여 문제분석 및 프로젝트 기획, 정보수집 및 통합설계, 초기개발 및 파일럿 테스트, 평가 및 수정개발 등의 단계를 따라 2015년 3월~2016년 12월까지 연구가 수행되었다. 전문가 간담회, 문헌검토 등을 통해 자기이해와 수용, 타인이해와 수용을 주요 목표로 한 인성교육 과정이 도출되었으며, 이를 기반으로 초․중․고등학생 110명을 대상으로 세 차례에 걸쳐 교육과정을 실행하고 평가를 실시하였다. 질적 연구방법을 활용해 인성교육 효과에 대해 파악한 결과, 교육 참가자들은 본 교육을 통해 자신에 대해 이해하고 자신의 생각을 더 잘 표현하게 됨, 친구들과 친밀한 관계를 만들 수 있게 됨, 가족 등 타인을 이해하고 원활한 관계를 형성하게 됨, 학교가 더 편해지고 애착을 가지게 되었음을 이야기하였다. 교사들 역시 학생들의 변화에 대해 유사한 보고를 하였는데 학생들이 밝아지고 자존감, 자기조절능력이 향상됨, 친구 관계가 돈독해지고 무단결석 및 지각 감소, 학교에 대한 소속감을 가지게 되었다고 하였다. 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 내면의 변화로부터 시작해 관계나 학교적응에 까지 영향을 미치게 되는 인성교육이 학교 현장에서 가지는 의의에 대해 논의하였다.

        Summary writing instruction and student learning outcome

        This study aims to answer two questions: (a) to what extent do university students improve their summary writing through instruction; and (b) what attitudinal changes do students experience in writing a summary after instruction? Given fact that previous studies on summary writing of Korean college students have shown that they are lacking in this skill and need to be taught explicitly, this study demonstrates the effects of instruction. In total, 12 students were taught how to write a summary using a lesson module. Then, using the assessment tool that I created, students’ learning outcomes were evaluated. The findings showed that they became better at organizing the structure of summaries, paraphrasing, finding main ideas, avoiding trivial details and redundant ideas, and judging grammar and word choice. Along with positive changes in their scores, students reported desirable changes in their attitude, such as avoiding plagiarism and gaining confidence in organizing a summary.
