Acupuncture therapy has demonstrated efficacy in several clinical areas, and of these areas the understanding of pain has progressed immensely in the last two decades. The underlying mechanisms of acupuncture in general and the analgesic effect in particular are still not clearly delineated. The leading hypothesis include the effects of local stimulation, neuronal gating, release of endogenous opiates, and the placebo effect. Accumulating evidence suggests that the central nervous system(CNS) is essential for the processing of these effects, via its modulation of the autonomic nervous system, neuro-immune system, and hormonal regulation. These processes tap into basic survival mechanisms. As such, understanding the effects of acupuncture within a neuroscience-based framework becomes vital. We propose a model which incorporates the stress-induced hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis(HPA-axis) model of Akil et al., the cholinergic anti-inflamatory observations of Tracey et al., and Petrovic et al.

The two basic scripts of the Korean writing system, Hanja (the logography of the traditionalKorean character) and Hangul (the more newer Korean alphabet), have been used togethersince the 14th century. While Hanja character has its own morphemic base, Hangul beingpurely phonemic without morphemic base. These two, therefore, have substantiallydifferent outcomes as a language as well as different neural responses. Based on theselinguistic differences between Hanja and Hangul, we have launched two studies; first wasto find differences in cortical activation when it is stimulated by Hanja and Hangul readingto support the much discussed dual-route hypothesis of logographic and phonologicalroutes in the brain by fMRI (Experiment 1). The second objective was to evaluate howHanja and Hangul affect comprehension, therefore, recognition memory, specifically theeffects of semantic transparency and morphemic clarity on memory consolidation andthen related cortical activations, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)(Experiment 2). The first fMRI experiment indicated relatively large areas of the brain areactivated by Hanja reading compared to Hangul reading. The second experiment, therecognition memory study, revealed two findings, that is there is only a small difference inrecognition memory for semantic transparency, while for the morphemic clarity was muchlarger between Hanja and Hangul. That is the morphemic clarity has significantly moreeffect than semantic transparency on recognition memory when studies by fMRI incorrelation with behavioral study.
영세 소매사업체의 시장 퇴출 : 생산성과 종사자 구성을 중심으로

본 연구는 종사자 기준 5인 이하의 한국 영세 소매사업체의 시장 퇴출 요인 을 사업체의 생산성과 종사자 구성을 중심으로 살펴본다. 통계청 경제총조사 및 전국사업체조사를 이용하여 분석한 결과, 2010년 기준 노동생산성이 높을수록 2011-2014 기간 퇴출 확률은 감소하는 것으로 나타난다. 이어서 영세 소매사업 체를 비임금근로자로만 구성된 가족사업체와 임금근로자를 고용하는 비가족사업 체로 구분하여 교차항 분석을 실시한 결과, 가족사업체는 비가족사업체에 비하 여 퇴출 확률이 낮게 나타난다. 그리고 평균적인 생산성 수준에서 가족사업체는 비가족사업체에 비해서 퇴출 확률이 낮은 것으로 추정된다. 한국 영세 소매업체 의 70% 이상이 가족사업체로 구성되어 있음을 고려했을 때, 본 연구의 결과는 한국 소매업에서 낮은 생산성에 따른 시장 퇴출이 상대적으로 활발하게 일어나지 않을 수 있음을 시사한다. This paper investigates the role of the productivity and worker composition in the exit of small retailers in Korea. Using the Economic Census and the Survey of Establishments, we find a retailer with higher labor productivity has a lower probability of exit. We also find an retailer with only non-wage workers has a lower probability of exit than that with at least one paid worker, even when they have the same productivity. This suggests that a market selection may not work actively in the Korean retail sector given that retailers with only non-wage workers account for more than seventy percent.

This paper presents the principles of image formation in NMR(Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) tomography. NMR tomographic imaging is a newly emerging, noninvasive, three-dimensional imaging technique. This new technique is an interdisciplinary science which encompasses the latest technologies in electrical, electronics, computers, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and medical sciences.
