A Reading of Milton's "L'Allegro" and "Il Penseroso"

Vol.13 No.-

The aesthetic beauty and power of the companion poems, "L'Allegro" and "Il Penserose," seem to be based upon the contrast in theme, mood, and imagery. The Thematic significance of each poem, Mirth and Melancholy or day and night, is contrasting. The predominant mood of "L'Allegro" is joyous and active while the other poem generally deals with somewhat pensive, yet rich pleasure. And if the former is full of pleasant sounds and dazzling colors, the latter shows abundant use of quietness and gloomy black/white images. When we further examine the poems, however, we will soon find that these various contrasting elements are carefully interwoven and juxtaposed in each poem, so that the two poems work as a whole to achieve a single vision. And this vision aims at an ultimate harmony in which the two opposing extremes are incorporated and transformed into a new unified form of joy and happiness. Thus, the paper will examine how the contrasting elements work in the two poems so as to achieve a harmonious unity, discussing the structure of the poems as well as the significances of some particular scenes.

“Number there in love was slain”: A Reading of “The Phoenix and Turtle”

Vol.50 No.1

Vol.10 No.3

The removal efficiencies of organic substrates, nitrogen and phosphorus in the anaerobic-aerobic biological phosphorus removal process were investigated by addition of acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid which are normal volatile fatty acids contained in anaerobic digester supernatants. Substrate utilization coefficients for the phosphorus release and uptake were also estimated. The effect of a VFA, which showed higher phosphorus removal efficiency than the other VFAs did, was also studied in an anaerobic-aerobic-anoxic biological nutrient removal process. For the anaerobic-aerobic process added by VFA, the phosphorus removal efficiencies were up to about 68%, 55% and 61% for the reactors of acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid added, respectively, which indicates the efficiencies were increased by about 8-21%, comparing to that of 47% for the reactor with no VFA added. There were no significant difference in removal efficiencies for organic substrate and NH_3-N without regard to addition of VFA. However, the removal efficiency of total nitrogen was increased in the case of VFA added, since NH_3-N was less produced. For the anaerobic-aerobic-anoxic process added VFA, the removal efficiencies for NH_3-N and PO_4^3--P were increased by 5% and 13%, respectively, comparing with them in the reactors not added VFA.

"My Fruits Are Only Flowers": A Reading of Andrew Marvell's "The Coronet"

Vol.18 No.1

As a Protestant, and especially a Puritan, Andrew Marvell finds the problem of glorifying God with human arts a very difficult task to practice. On the one hand, he has to do his best to achieve something beautiful and great to reveal God’s supremacy or Grace; on the other hand, however, he must be cautious not to make his own works too admirable, so that the work itself may not intercept the praises which is to be directed to God and God only. “The Coronet” is unique in the sense that it manifests Marvell’s dilemma as a Protestant humanist. The poem is self-reflective and confessional. It becomes in itself the poet's coronet to glorify his Saviour, but the poet realizes that his work is contaminated by his own worldly desire. Compared to that of Donne or Herbert, Marvell’s awareness that his own artistic endeavor is ultimately insufficient to praise God seems more intense and pervasive. What is “crooked winding ways” to Herbert becomes “the Serpent old” to Marvell. It is ironic that the poet should recognize the serpent when his confidence in his work reaches its highest point. And to make the dramatic moment more catastrophic, this serpent appears to be closer to the poet himself than to Satan, and this makes the poet’s dilemma more difficult to resolve. Andrew Marvell’s “The Coronet,” although it inherits metaphysical conventions of Donne and Herbert in its style and metaphors, must be read within the tradition of Spenser and Milton. Marvell’s political stance and his pastoral sensitivity, together with his mild scepticism―as we can see in “To His Coy Mistress”―may have located him in the line of Cavaliers or metaphysical poets. But his keen awareness of the dilemma between Christianity and human aesthetics and the way he proposes to resolve it clearly position him within the Protestant humanism of the early modern period.

Vol.21 No.2

Francis Beaumont's The Knight of the Burning Pestle includes three separate plots, which, at the first sight, do not seem to be logically connected to one another: a city comedy, a chivalric romance, and what is close to a farce created by George and Nell. And it is my contention that the most important step to the meaning of the work as a whole would be understanding the citizen George and his wife Nell. Since they are spectators of the drama, actors in the drama, and surrogates of the poet, to comprehend who they are, what their functions in the work are, and what the author tries to say through the couple is an inevitable step for us to see the core of the work. Their role in the drama is paradoxical, for they interrupt the proceedings of the plot and at the same time create their own drama. While criticizing and evaluating the characters of the drama, they induce the audience's criticism towards themselves. Through the couple and the drama produced by them, Beaumont criticizes and ridicules both the upper class and citizens in the seventeen-century England. It is the most significant aspects of the work that the drama parodies and satirizes both classes together. George and Nell are in fact the main characters of the work. The Knight of the Burning Pestle establishes itself as one of the greatest Renaissance drama through their incompatible and ingenuous wits. This paper is to re-examine the parody and satire in the work while re-reading what they say and do in the work.

Feasibility of Adopting the "Step-up Approach" in Managing Necrotizing Pancreatitis-induced Pancreatic-colonic Fistula

Vol.73 No.6

Managing acute pancreatitis is clinically challenging because of the generally poor patient condition, the variety of treatment options depending on the severity and complications, and the uncertainty of outcomes. Recently, the step-up approach, which involves less invasive initial treatment and more invasive subsequent treatment, where necessary, has been proposed as the mainstay of managing pancreatitis. This paper presents a case of a 57-year-old man with severe acute pancreatitis, who developed an unexpected fistula in the rectum, which was treated successfully using the step-up approach. In managing this case, the authors faced clinical challenges in determining the infection of necrotic tissue in the early phase of the disease, the optimal timing and method of drainage, and the fistula closure or repair technique. Successful management of this case using the step-up approach validated current recommendations and suggests that it is a reasonable treatment strategy for pancreatic-colonic fistulas. This case also highlights the importance of an awareness that pancreatitis-associated complications can develop in an unexpected manner.
