        It is very important to eliminate the immense economic loss caused by cracking in apples through examining the causes of cracking and divising a possible method of prevention of it. Several investigators published their findings on the causes of the cracking of apples which develop on the skin of Ralls apples. However, no definite conclusions or established methods of prevention have been published to this date. Therefore, in this study the causes of the cracking of apples are examined through the use of several methods: (a) the histological and physiological, (b) the microelemental, and (c) the natural environmental. The results are as follows: 1). At the early stage of growth, the thicknesses of the cuticle, as well as of the subepidermis, were the same in Ralls apples without envelopes, Ralls with envelopes, and Jonathan. However. at maturity. the thicknesses differed in the following manner; Ralls apples without envelopes were thickest: Ralls envelopes were less thick than those without envelopes; while Jonathan apples were thinest. 2). Although in the Ralls without envelopes the epidermis is arranged in a brick wall like layer during maturity, in the middle of August the brick wall like epidermis begins to collapse and is surrounded by the cuticle. The process of cracking seems to start with the lenticle and the fruit spot. 3). The rate of cracking was slowed by application of a mixture of IAA and Bordeaux mixture solution, but cracking was not completely halted by this treatment. 4). The stem of a branch laden with apples was put into a solution containing Mn-54, and after absorption took place the distribution of Mn-54 was measured. The results of the measurements were as follows; the bark contained the most Mn-54; the leaves contained the second largest quantitiy; and the apples has the least. 5). The two orchards which were tested tended to have a low soil pH, and a high concentration of soil-solution Mn. 6). The soil with a high rate of cracking tended to have a high pH, which the soil with a low rate had a low pH. 7). In trees with a high rate of cracking, the amount of Mn in the leaves was equal to the amount in the stalk. However, in trees with a low rate of cracking, the amount of Mn in the leaves tended to be high compared with that found in the stalk. 8). The epidermis of the Ralls had a high Ca content than the epidermis of the Johnathan. 9). The epidermis of cracked apples tended to have a higher content of Ca, K,P, Cu and Fe than the epidermis of sound apples. 10). Amoug the apples tested, 11% cracked during the course of the year, with the cracking starting in the middle of Sept. 1969, This low percentage of cracking can be attributed to the small amount of rain during harvest time (late Sept. and October). The total of the added temperature during May, June, and July was 1962℃. 11). Cracking occurred more frequently in apples on the periphery of the tree, in well-colored apples, on the south side of the apples, and on the cheeks of the apples. These occurrances can perhaps be attributed to the amount of sunlight. 12). In the trees tested with newspaper envelops, cracking occurred in 1.9% of the apples with envelopes, and in 11.9% of the apples without envelopes. In the trees tested with Polysteron paper envelopes, cracking occurred in 2.5% of the apples with envelops, and 13.4% of the apples without envelopes. The apples with Polysteron paper envelopes were less infected by insects than the apples with newspaper envelopes. 13). Cracking occurred in 2.4% of the apples covered with vinyl, while in trees not covered with vinyl, 16.6% of the apples crack. The Artificial precipitation produced during harvest time increased the rate of cracking.

        Biocontrol Traits and Antagonistic Potential of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Strain NJZJSB3 Against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a Causal Agent of Canola Stem Rot

        Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain NJZJSB3 has shown antagonism of several phytopathogens in vitro, especially Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Both the broth culture and cell suspension of strain NJZJSB3 could completely protect the detached leaves of canola (Brassica napus) from S. sclerotiorum infection. In pot experiments, the application of strain NJZJSB3 cell suspension (108 CFU/ml) decreased the disease incidence by 83.3%, a result similar to commercially available fungicide (Dimetachlone). In order to investigate the potential biocontrol mechanisms of strain NJZJSB3, the nonvolatile antifungal compounds it produces were identified as iturin homologs using HPLC-ESI-MS. Antifungal volatile organic compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The detected volatiles toluene, phenol, and benzothiazole showed antifungal effects against S. sclerotiorum in chemical control experiments. Strain NJZJSB3 also produced biofilm, siderophores and cell-wall-degrading enzymes (protease and β-1,3-glucanase). These results suggest that strain NJZJSB3 can be a tremendous potential agent for the biological control of sclerotinia stem rot.

        Anomalous Propagation Characteristics of an Airy Beam in Nonlocal Nonlinear Medium

        The anomalous propagation characteristics of a single Airy beam in nonlocal nonlinear medium are investigated by utilizing the split-step Fourier-transform method. We show that besides the normal straight propagation trajectory, the breathing solitons formed by the interaction between Airy beam and nonlocal nonlinear medium can propagate along the sinusoidal trajectory, and the anomalous trajectory can be modulated arbitrarily by altering the initial amplitude and the nonlocal nonlinear coefficient. In addition, the initial amplitude and the nonlocal nonlinear coefficient can have inverse impacts on the formation and transformation of the equilibrium state of spatial solitons, when the two parameters are larger than certain values. Therefore, the reversible transformation of the evolution dynamics of two soliton states can be realized by adjusting those two parameters properly. Finally, it is shown that the propagation properties of the solitons formed by the interaction between Airy beam and nonlocal nonlinear medium can be controlled arbitrarily, by adjusting the distribution factor and nonlocal coefficient.

        Synergistic efficacy of LBH and αB-crystallin through inhibiting transcriptional activities of p53 and p21

        LBH is a transcription factor as a candidate gene for CHD associated with partial trisomy 2p syndrome. To identify potential LBH-interacting partners, a yeast two-hybrid screen using LBH as a bait was performed with a human heart cDNA library. One of the clones identified encodes αB-crystallin. Co-immunoprecipitation and GST pull-down assays showed that LBH interacts with αB-crystallin, which is further confirmed by mammalian two-hybrid assays. Co-localization analysis showed that in COS-7 cells, αB-crystallin that is cytoplasmic alone, accumulates partialy in the nucleus when co-transfected with LBH. Transient transfection assays indicated that overexpression of LBH or αB-crystallin reduced the transcriptional activities of p53 and p21, respectively, Overexpression of both αB-crystallin and LBH together resulted in a stronger repression of the transcriptional activities of p21 and p53. These results showed that the interaction of LBH and αB-crystallin may inhibit synergistically the transcriptional regulation of p53 and p21. [BMB reports 2010; 43(6): 432-437]

      • Identification of Homer1 as a Potential Prognostic Marker for Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma

        Background: The aim of the present study was to analyze whether Homer1 is a potential prognostic marker for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). Materials and Methods: The expression of Homer1 in ICC tissue was detected with immunohistochemistry and levels of protein in ICC and paratumor tissues were evaluated by Western blotting. Survival analysis by the Kaplan-Meier method was performed to assess prognostic significance. Results: Homer1 expression was high in 67.4% (58/86) of ICC samples, and there was significant difference between ICC and adjacent noncancerous tissues (p<0.001); high expression was associated with poor histologic differentiation (p=0.019), TNM stage (p=0.014), lymph node metastasis (p=0.040), and lymphatic invasion (p=0.025). On Kaplan-Meier analysis, a comparison of survival curves of low versus high expressors of Homer1 revealed a highly significant difference in OS (p=0.001) and DFS (p=0.006), indicating that high expression of Homer1 was linked with a worse prognosis. Multivariate analyses showed that Homer1 expression was an independent risk factor predicting overall survival[Hazard ratio(HR), 7.52; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.63-21.47; p=0.002] and disease-free survival (HR, 11.56; 95%CI, 5.17-25.96; p<0.001) in ICC. Conclusions: Homer1 promotes lymphatic invasion and associates with lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis of ICC. The current study shows that Homer1 may be an independent prognostic factor for ICC patients after curative resection, and it provides an important basis for screening/treating high-risk patients.

        Seismic behavior of composite walls with encased steel truss

        This paper studies the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) walls with encased cold-formed and thin-walled (CFTW) steel truss, which can be used as an alternative to the conventional RC walls or steel reinforced concrete (SRC) composite walls for high-rise buildings in high seismic regions. Seven one-fourth scaled RC wall specimens with encased CFTW steel truss were designed, manufactured and tested to failure under reversed cyclic lateral load and constant axial load. The test parameters were the axial load ratio, configuration and volumetric steel ratio of encased web brace. The behaviors of the test specimens, including damage formation, failure mode, hysteretic curves, stiffness degradation, ductility and energy dissipation, were examined. Test results indicate that the encased web braces can effectively improve the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of RC walls. The steel angles are more suitable to be used as the web brace than the latticed batten plates in enhancing the ductility and energy dissipation. Higher axial load ratio is beneficial to lateral load capacity, but can result in reduced ductility and energy dissipation capacity. A volumetric ratio about 0.25% of encased web brace is believed cost-effective in ensuring satisfactory seismic performance of RC walls. The axial load ratio should not exceed the maximum level, about 0.20 for the nominal value or about 0.50 for the design value. Numerical analyses were performed to predict the backbone curves of the specimens and calculation formula from the Chinese Code for Design of Composite Structures was used to predict the maximum lateral load capacity. The comparison shows good agreement between the test and predicted results.

        The Revival of Confucianism in an Age of Globalization

        Confucianism has been revived in many spheres of social life in mainland China. In this age of globalization, Confucianism has to face several challenges, including global issues that all states have to deal with together such as global justice, global environmental issues, and global peace as well as domestic issues such as economic development and social justice. A framework of “Left- Confucianism” which may cope with these challenges in a more promising way will be proposed in this paper. It tries to combine the core values of the “original Confucianism” with the socialist values that have had a great impact on China’s development over the past century or so. This combination of socialism and Confucianism does not merely take socialism as the standard but also takes Confucianism equally seriously. In this paper, we show how the core values of “Left Confucianism” can help us to think about domestic and global challenges in innovative ways.

        Voltammetric Investigation of Vitamin B_6 at a Glassy Carbon Electrode and Its Application in Determination

        The voltammetic behavior of Vitamin B6 (VB6) was studied at a glassy carbon electrode in phosphate buffers using cyclic, linear sweep and differential pulse voltammetry. The oxidation process was shown to be irreversible over the entire pH range studied (4.0-10.0) and was adsorption controlled. The adsorption amount of VB6 on the glassy carbon electrode was examined by chronocoulometry and the value of n, product of transfer coefficient and number of electrons transferred in the rate determining step, was determined from Tafel plot. VB6 was determined by differential pulse voltammetry and the peak current was found linearly with its concentration in the range of 3 10-7-2 10-4 mol L-1. The detection limit was 1 10-7 mol L-1. The procedure was successfully applied for the assay of VB6 in tablets.
