        Covalent Immobilization of Arginine onto Polyacrylonitrile-Based Membrane for the Effective Separation of Oil/Water Emulsion

        Membrane technology has been accepted as a very effective approach to purify oily wastewater. However, the serious membrane fouling induced by the adsorption of oily foulants significantly hinders the development of membrane technology in treating oily wastewater. To improve the anti-fouling property and oil/ water separation efficiency of membrane, this work reports on the covalent immobilization of short-chain arginine (Arg) molecules onto polyacrylonitrile/polyacrylonitrile- co-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PAN/PAN-co-PGMA) blend membrane surface via a ring-opening reaction between epoxy groups and amine groups. It was found that the covalent immobilization of Arg molecules effectively increased the surface hydrophilicity of the membrane, resulting in a significant decrease of the interaction force between the foulants and the membrane surface. This typical characteristic was revealed by the pure water contact angle and the force-extension curve measurements. The Arg-immobilized membranes exhibited much higher separation efficiency against oil/water emulsions than the pristine PAN and PAN/PAN-co-PGMA membranes. Especially when the grafting amount of Arg was 157.3 μg/cm2, the oil rejection ratio of an Arg-immobilized membrane was as high as 99.2%. In addition, the flux recovery ratio of the membrane still reached 88.8%, even after two cycle filtrations of pure water and oil/water emulsion. These results indicated that the Arg-immobilized membrane may have practical applications for oil/water emulsion separation.

        중국 대학생의 SNS 이용이 꽌시(關係) 형성에 미치는 영향

        This study aims to examine Chinese users motives for using SNS and to find out how usage behaviors and interaction factors affect Quanxi. Specifically, how motivations for using SNS, using behaviors, and interaction factors affect the formation of Guanxi was investigated. The factor analysis, revealed six dimensions of SNS use motivatioins; self-expression, information acquisition, entertainment and leisure, learning, social interaction, and escapism. It has been confirmed that among the motivations self-expression, information acquisition and escapism, among the using behaviors writing comments, and among the interaction factors perceived intimacy predicted the formation Guanxi. The study is significant in that it identified how SNS affects peoples interpersonal relationship in the absence of face-to-face contact due to COVID-19.

        The comparison and optimization of zirconia, alumina, and zirconia-alumina supported PtSnIn trimetallic catalysts for propane dehydrogenation reaction

        The zirconia, alumina, and zirconia-alumina (xZr-Al) supported PtSnIn catalysts were prepared andcomparatively studied for propane dehydrogenation reaction. The structure–function relationships ofthe resultant catalysts are well elucidated upon several state-of-art physico-chemical characterizations. The results show that xZr-Al used as support for trimetallic PtSnIn catalysts exhibits the significantcatalytic performances. The PtSnIn/08Zr-Al catalyst has the highest Pt dispersion accompanied with thesmallest average Pt particles, and it presents the initial propane conversion and propylene selectivityabove 55.0% and 98.0% respectively. The initial propane conversions afterfive reaction–regenerationcycles are all above 55.0% and only decrease little ( 3%).

        <P>The cellular generation of toxic metabolites and subsequent detoxification failure can cause the uncontrolled accumulation of these metabolites in cells, leading to cellular dysfunction. Amyloid-beta protein (Abeta), a normal metabolite of neurons, tends to form toxic oligomeric structures that cause neurodegeneration. It is unclear how healthy neurons control the levels of intracellular oligomeric Abeta in order to avoid neurodegeneration. Using immunochemical and biochemical studies, we show that the Abeta-binding serine protease Omi is a stress-relieving heat-shock protein that protects neurons against neurotoxic oligomeric Abeta. Through its PDZ domain, Omi binds preferentially to neurotoxic oligomeric forms of Abeta rather than non-toxic monomeric forms to detoxify oligomeric Abeta by disaggregation. This specific interaction leads not only to mutual detoxification of the pro-apoptotic activity of Omi and Abeta-induced neurotoxicity, but also to a reduction of neurotoxic-Abeta accumulation. The neuroprotective role of Omi is further supported by its upregulation during normal neurogenesis and neuronal maturation in mice, which could be in response to the increase in the generation of oligomeric Abeta during these processes. These findings provide novel and important insights into the detoxification pathway of intraneuronal oligomeric Abeta in mammals and the protective roles of Omi in neurodegeneration, suggesting a novel therapeutic target in neurodegenerative diseases.</P>

        New snakeflies of the genus Inocellia Schneider, 1843 (Raphidioptera: Inocelliidae) from the Hengduan Mountains, China

        Three species of the snakefly genus Inocellia Schneider, 1843 (Raphidioptera: Inocelliidae) are reported from the Hengduan Mountains in southwestern China. Among them, Inocellia yulongensis sp. nov. is described as new to science. Inocellia cheni Liu, H. Aspöck, Yang & U. Aspöck, 2010 is first recorded from Sichuan Province based on a newly collected male from a locality over 4200 m a.s.l. Inocellia obtusangularis Liu, H. Aspöck, Yang & U. Aspöck, 2010 is first recorded from Yunnan Province. The rich species diversity of snakeflies and its biogeographic significance from the Hengduan Mountains are discussed.

        A Voronoi cell finite element method for estimating effective mechanical properties of composite solid propellants

        The mechanical properties of Composite solid propellant (CSP) are the critical material parameters to analyze the structural integrity of propellant grains, and have a significant influence on the life and reliability of solid rocket motors. A Voronoi cell finite element method using an adaptive algorithm in the time domain is proposed for investigating the linear viscoelasticity of CSP in the present paper. A process is brought forward to produce a Representative volume element (RVE) model, which reflects the microstructural features of CSP. Numerical viscoelastic examples are used for varying the accuracy of this method. In addition, finite element simulations are conducted to understand the effect of microstructural morphology and material properties of inclusion on the effective mechanical properties of CSP using the new method. When this method is applied to the design process of CSP, it can reduce the design cost and shorten the design cycle effectively. The current microscopic numerical analysis method can be used to provide guidance for designing and analyzing the mechanical properties of composite viscoelastic materials.

        Dietary supplementation of Eucommia leaf extract to growing-finishing pigs alters muscle metabolism and improves meat quality

        Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of dietary supplementation of Eucommia ulmoides leaf extract (ELE) on muscle metabolism and meat quality of pigs with and without pre-slaughter transportation. Methods: In a 43-day feeding experiment, a total of 160 pigs with an initial body weight 60.00±2.00 kg were randomly assigned into four groups in a completely randomized design with 10 replicates. Pigs in groups A and C were fed a basal diet and pigs in groups B and D were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0.5% ELE. Pigs were slaughtered with (group B and D) or without (group A and C) pre-slaughter transport. Muscle chemical composition, postmortem glycolysis, meat quality and muscle metabolome were analyzed. Results: Dietary ELE supplementation had no effect on the proximate composition of porcine muscle, but increased free phenylalanine, proline, citruline, norvaline, and the total free amino acids in muscle. In addition, dietary ELE increased decanoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, but decreased heptadecanoic acid, oleic acid, trans-oleic acid, and monounsaturated fatty acids in muscle. Meat quality measurement demonstrated that ELE improved meat water holding capacity and eliminated the negative effects of pre-slaughter transport on meat cooking yield and tenderness. Dietary ELE reduced muscle glycolytic potential, inhibited glycolysis and muscle pH decline in the postmortem conversion of muscle to meat and increased the activity of citrate synthase in muscle. Metabolomics analysis by liquid chromatographic tandem mass spectrometric showed that ELE enhanced muscle energy level, regulated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling, modulated glycogenolysis/glycolysis, and altered the metabolism of carbohydrate, fatty acids, ketone bodies, amino acids, purine, and pyrimidine. Conclusion: Dietary ELE improved meat quality and alleviated the negative effect of preslaughter transport on meat quality by enhancing muscle oxidative metabolism capacity and inhibiting glycolysis in postmortem muscle, which is probably involved its regulation of AMPK.

        Shear Performance of Steel Thin Sheet-to-Thick Plate Bolted Connections

        This paper presents a study on the bolted connections of cold-formed steel (CFS) sheets and hot-rolled steel (HRS) plates. The test strengths and failure modes were compared with the results predicted by the North American Specification (AISI S 100–16) and European Standard (EN1993-1–3) for CFS structures. Additionally, the influence of the fastener diameter and the thickness of the CFS sheets and HRS plates on the specimens were discussed. In addition, numerical modeling of the specimens was established to simulate the failure modes and load-deformation relationships. Finally, a modified equation for bearing strength is proposed, discussed, and verified by reliability analysis. The results showed that bearing failure, shear failure and net section failure were observed. The nominal strengths predicted by AISI S 100 and EN 1993–1-3 are generally conservative. The numerical models can predict the failure modes and load-deformation relationships of the specimens with good agreement. In addition, the proposed method for the bearing strength of the connections has better accuracy than the current specifications.
