The participation of superoxide in initiating tissue damage from administration of a xenobiotics is best illustrated by paraquat intoxication, in which it is known that one electron reduction of paraquat leads to the formation of radicals which react with molecular oxygen to give superoxide. In the present study, the effects of paraquat on the level of glutathione and activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione stransferase were investigated in rat liver and erythrocytes. The contents of glutathione in liver and blood were sinificantly decreased by paraquat administration, but the activities of enzymes were unaltered. Incubation of the buffered aerobic mixture of erythrocyte in the presence of 5mM glucose, Paraquat and/or N-ethylmaleimide(NEM) resulted in the formation of lipid peroxide, the activities of various enzyme and the levels of glutathione were determined. The malondialdehyde(MDA) contents as a indicator of lipid peroxidation was decreased and the levels of total glutathione were not changed but the levels of oxidized glutathione(GSSG) were in creased in paraquat treated erythrocytes. The activites of ezyme were decreased in paraquat treated erythrocytes but in reduced glutathione(GSH) treated erythrocyte, the enzymes activities were less decreased by paraquat. These results suggest that paraquat toxicity was probably somewhat reduced by GSH, but paraquat-induced injury were not increased by GSH depletion in erythrocytes.

Background/Aims: Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) is a rare disorder characterized by gas in the bowel wall PI is associated with many various clinical conditions, and may follow a benign course or lead to a life-threatening condition. Augmentation mammoplasty is one of the most frequently requested aesthetic procedures in plastic surgeons. Transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA), an endoscopy-assisted procedure in which saline breast prostheses are inserted through the umbilicus, is attracted both surgeons and patients due to possibility of procedure without visible scars on the breast area. With this technique, postoperative complications are rare. Here, we described a case of PI developing after TUBA. Methods: A 21-year-old woman visited our hospital complaining of vague abdominal discomfort and constipation. She underwent TUBA three months before visiting our hospital, and developed symtoms thereafter. Her abdominal exam was non-specific. Chest radiography showed no remarkable finding. Supine and upright films of the abdomen showed cystic gas-filled spaces in the ascending and proximal transverse colonic wall. A computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis revealed thickened large bowel with air bubbles. There was no gas in the biliary tree or portomesenteric vein. Colonoscopy demonstrated variable sized numerous gas-filled cysts in the ascending and proximal transverse colon. Results: Histology showed variably sized, air-filled cysts and multinucleated giant cells in mucosal and submucosal layer, compatible with PI. Because her clinical status did not suggest peritonitis or bowel necrosis, she was managed with conservative approach. Conclusions: She was discharged in stable condition.
천식 의심 환자에서 천식 치료에 의한 유도 객담 내 염증지표의 변화

Background: Eosinophilic airway inflammation is characteristic for typical asthma, but neutrophilic inflammation has been found in severe asthmatics resistant to steroid therapy. This study aimed to evaluate responses to asthma treatment according to inflammatory cell types in sputum. Methods: For a cross-sectional study, 240 consecutive patients with suspected asthma who underwent a 4.5% saline-induced sputum test and a test for airway hyperresponsiveness to methacholine or for airway reversibility were enrolled. Of these patients, 23 who inhaled corticosteroids were entered to a follow-up sputum study. Results: The number of sputum eosinophils was significantly related to the forced expiratory volume in one second/ forced vital capacity (r=-0.180, P<0.05) and airway hyperresponsiveness (r=-0.222, P<0.01), and the number of neutrophils was significantly related to age (r=0.165, P<0.05) and forced expiratory volume in one second (r=-0.157, P< 0.05). Subjects with sputum eosinophilia (n=88, 20.5%) had received asthma treatment before the tests more often than those with neutrophilia (n=23, 4.3%) or mixed granulocytic nature (n=11, 0%) (P<0.05 for each). In the follow-up study, the number of eosinophils was significantly decreased in the eosinophilic subjects (P<0.05), and the Δinterferon- γ/interleukin-5 ratio was significantly related to Δeosinophils (r=0.933, P<0.001). There was an inverse relationship between the number of neutrophils and the increase in forced expiratory volume in one second (r=-0.459, P<0.05) or Δinterferon-γ (r=-0.842, P<0.01). Conclusion: The severity of asthma may depend on inflammatory cell types in sputum. Although inflammatory markers of sputum improve by asthma treatment, treatment responses differ according to cell types. Therefore, sputum examination may be useful for predicting therapeutic responses in asthmatics.

Resistance to radiotherapy remains several obstacles in the treatment of high-risk colorectal cancer patients. Recent studies have indicated that Neuromedin U (NMU) is over-expressed in various cancers, and contributes significantly to cancer growth and development. However, the impact of NMU in colorectal cancer has been rarely known. By RNAseq and real-time PCR analysis with colorectal cancer tissues derived from patients, NMU was classified as one of differentially expressed genes in radiation resistance of colorectal cancer. In colorectal cancer cells, knockdown by NMU siRNA made cells sensitive to radiation and decreased cell biological behavior such as proliferation and migration. NMU depletion inhibited nuclear translocation of YAP/TAZ and the expression of target genes of YAP/TAZ. On the other hand, NMU overexpression in the cancer cells shows the opposite. Therefore, we suggested that NMU is a potential biomarker and therapeutic target of radiation resistance in high-risk colorectal cancer patients.

The aim of this study is the development of technologies of methanol production from carbon dioxide by catalytic hydrogenation. Experiments about carbon dioxide hydrogenation by catalyst mixed with CuO, ZnO, Cr₂O₃ and Al₂O₃ were conducted to find optimum catalyst and reaction condition. Reactions were carried out at atmospheric and high pressures between 200 to 350℃. High yield of methanol was obtained with Cu/ZnO/Cr₂O₃/Al₂O₃ catalyst at 250℃ and above 30 atmospheric pressure. There was not any increament of hydrogenation reactivity for the catalysts which was made by the addition of Pd to Cu/ZnO/Cr₂O₃/Al₂O₃.
