유아에게 참여 기회를 주려는 교사의 노력과 그 경험의 의미 = The process and meaning in early childhood teachers` efforts to give children participatory opportunities

This study explores the meanings of early childhood teachers` experiences as they endeavored to activate their children`s participation. For this study, an in-depth interview was conducted with two new teachers of three year-old children class at Hangbok kindergarten, located in K-city, Kyungki province, South Korea. For over a period seven months, from Sept. 2008 to Feb. 2009, the two participating teachers worked out and tried out ways to provide participation opportunity for their children in every area including classroom activities. The following results were obtained: the participating teachers spent time reflecting on ways to enhance their children`s participatory opportunities and to make a class culture in which participation was natural and desirable. During the process, teachers began to realize the value of their taking the first step in initiating actions connected to the children`s happiness, they began to contemplate which teacher educational behaviors are good for children, that is, which are child-centered and thus respectful of children`s rights while contributing to their growth. This thoughtful process of looking at children and attempting to understand them by reflecting on their needs and happiness, and then measuring teacher efforts against these goals enhanced the participation and growth of both the children and the teachers. These findings are strong recommendations for encouraging teachers to engage in thoughtful observations and self-reflective practices so that they can build vibrantly learning classrooms in which children actively and wholeheartedly participate. Further studies for more revelatory documentation are also suggested.
