메타버스를 위한 철학과 교육

메타버스는 가상세계를 표방하는 대표적인 개념으로 코로나로 촉발된 비대면 사회 활동에서 특히 두드러졌다. 메타버스 플랫폼은 특히 교육계에서 환영받았는데 그 용어에서 오는 모호함으로 인해 사람들은 혼란을 겪기도 했다. 대면 생활이 조금씩 재개되는 현시점에서는 메타버스의 인기도 한풀 꺾이기 시작했고, 지금의 메타버스 플랫폼이 진정한 가상현실인지에 관해 물음을 제기하는 사람들도 나타났다. 이는 메타버스에 관해 철학적 고민 없이 사용법부터 익히기에 바빴던 지난 2년여의 결과이기도 하다. 앞으로 메타버스가 교육의 큰 축이 될 것이라는 데에는 의심의 여지가 없다. 그러나 가상현실 구현에 있어 교육 철학적 전제가 선행되어야 이를 바탕으로 기술 교육이 정당성을 확보하고 목적과 활용 사이에 균형 잡힌 교과 과정이 구체적으로 개발될 수 있을 것이다. 본 논문에서는 이를 위해 하이데거, 메를로 퐁티, 혜강 최한기의 철학적 방법을 소개한다. 이 세 철학자의 존재론적 접근에서 보면 실제와 가상은 다름이 아닌 하나이며 양자 간의 ‘포개짐’이 더욱 개선된 교육적 환경을 조성함을 알 수 있다. Metaverse is a representative concept of the virtual world, and it was especially prominent in non-face-to-face social activities triggered by Corona. The metaverse platform was especially welcomed in the education world, but the ambiguity of the term confused people. At this point, when face-to-face life resumes, the popularity of the metaverse has begun to wane, and some people have questioned whether the current metaverse platforms are a true virtual reality. This is also the result of the past two years of being busy learning how to use the metaverse without considering philosophical concerns. There is no doubt that the metaverse will become a major axis of education in the future. However, educational philosophical premise must be preceded in the realization of virtual reality, based on which, technology education can be justified and a balanced curriculum between purpose and application can be developed. For this purpose, this paper introduces the philosophical methods of Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Han-ki Choi. From the ontological approach of these three philosophers, it can be seen that the real and the virtual are virtually one, and the ‘overlapping’ between the two creates a more improved educational environment.

Foreign Currency Denominated Debt and Dividend Policy

We examine whether foreign currency denominated debt affects corporate dividend policy. Specifically, this study tests the prediction that foreign currency denominated debt ratio is negatively related to the likelihood of paying dividends and the levels of dividends. Consistent with our prediction, we find that firms with a higher foreign currency debt ratio are less likely to pay dividends, and pay lower levels of dividends when they do. These findings indicate that foreign currency debt ratio is one of the important factors that affect corporate dividend policy. Our results provide evidence that foreign creditors have the potential in determining corporate dividend policy.

We examine whether foreign currency denominated debt affects corporate dividend policy. Specifically, this study hypothesizes that foreign currency denominated debt ratio is negatively related to the likelihood of paying dividends and the level of dividends. For the hypothesis, we provide the following two rationales, one based on foreign currency risk and the other based on agency costs. Consistent with our hypothesis, we find that a firm with a higher foreign currency debt ratio is less likely to pay dividends and pays a lower level of dividends. These findings suggest that foreign currency debt can be an important determinant of corporate dividend policy. Our results are robust to endogeneity concerns, to alternative measures of the level of dividends, and to change regressions. We also find that the negative relation between foreign currency debt ratio and the level of dividends is more pronounced in firms with lower cash flow uncertainty and higher free cash flows. Overall, our empirical evidence suggests that foreign creditors have the potential to determine corporate dividend policy.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Features of Syringobulbia in Small Breed Dogs

Syringobulbia is a rare neurological disorder characterized by a fluid-filled cavity in the brainstem. In this study, clinical signs, features on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the diseases present concurrently with syringobulbia were investigated in 33 small breed dogs. Most dogs (97%) had concurrent syringomyelia, and some dogs (24%) presented with vestibular or cranial nerve symptoms associated with the medulla oblongata. MRIs revealed slit-like, bulbous, and vertical linear shapes of the cavities on T2-weighted hyperintense and T1-weighted hypointense signals similar to the cerebrospinal fluid. Chiari-like malformations were identified in all dogs. This study highlights the association of syringobulbia with syringomyelia and Chiari-like malformations in small breed dogs with or without brainstem-associated clinical signs.

Alterations in lung and gut microbiota reduce diversity in patients with nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease

Background/Aims: Although the incidence of nontuberculous mycobacteria pulmonary disease (NTM-PD), a chronic infectious disease, is increasing, lung and gut microbiota dysbiosis in NTM patients has rarely been studied and was therefore the focus of this study. Methods: We analyzed the microbiota diversity in sputum and stool samples from 10 healthy subjects and 10 patients with NTM-PD through sequencing of the V3 and V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. In NTM-PD patients, we comparatively evaluated the microbiota diversity according to the body mass index (BMI), with BMI ≤ 18.5 kg/m2 defined as “underweight” and BMI > 18.5 kg/m2 as “others.” Results: The sputum microbiota from NTM-PD patients tended to have lower index values of amplicon sequence variant richness, Shannon evenness, and beta diversity than those from the control group. Furthermore, NTM-PD patients with a low BMI had a lower microbiota diversity than patients with high BMI. Fecal samples from NTM-PD patients also significantly differed in alpha and beta diversity compared with the control group and exhibited a diversity pattern similar to that found in sputum samples. Conclusions: Our results reveal that the lung and gut microbiota of patients with NTM-PD exhibit an altered distribution and reduced richness and diversity.

Robust-PCA-based hierarchical plane extraction for application to geometric 3D indoor mapping

<B>Purpose</B> - The authors aim to propose a novel plane extraction algorithm for geometric 3D indoor mapping with range scan data. <B>Design/methodology/approach</B> - The proposed method utilizes a divide-and-conquer step to efficiently handle huge amounts of point clouds not in a whole group, but in forms of separate sub-groups with similar plane parameters. This method adopts robust principal component analysis to enhance estimation accuracy. <B>Findings</B> - Experimental results verify that the method not only shows enhanced performance in the plane extraction, but also broadens the domain of interest of the plane registration to an information-poor environment (such as simple indoor corridors), while the previous method only adequately works in an information-rich environment (such as a space with many features). <B>Originality/value</B> - The proposed algorithm has three advantages over the current state-of-the-art method in that it is fast, utilizes more inlier sensor data that does not become contaminated by severe sensor noise and extracts more accurate plane parameters.

A framework for building an evaluation model for luxury products

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a more inclusive and comprehensive model, which differed from existing evaluation models on brand value, to evaluate luxury products. This paper analyzed previous research, designed a luxury product evaluation model and discussed its applications and implications, a new attempt in the field of luxury product models. Methodology/Approach: In order to develop a luxury product evaluation model, this study identified major evaluation factors by conducting analysis on previous research, expert interviews and workshops. Furthermore, it conducted a survey on experts associated with the Korean Society for Quality Management and the general public in order to verify the usefulness of the developed model. Research Limitation/implication: New evaluation models consistently require more case studies and follow-up research in order to verify their validity and generalization. In particular, the application of this model is expected to propose policy implications and roadmaps for the development of promising luxury brand companies in the future. Findings: This study suggests Korean luxury brand companies or companies seeking to create a luxury brand apply the proposed luxury product evaluation model to diagnose their current status and establish future goals and guidelines. Originality/Value: This study proposes new, comprehensive perspectives and policy considerations on existing research on the evaluation of luxury products.
