        Neural stem cells injured by oxidative stress can be rejuvenated by GV1001, a novel peptide, through scavenging free radicals and enhancing survival signals

        <P>Oxidative stress is a well-known pathogenic mechanism of a diverse array of neurological diseases, and thus, numerous studies have attempted to identify antioxidants that prevent neuronal cell death. GV1001 is a 16-amino-acid peptide derived from human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT). Considering that hTERT has a strong antioxidant effect, whether GV1001 also has an antioxidant effect is a question of interest. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of GV1001 against oxidative stress in neural stem cells (NSCs). Primary culture NSCs were treated with different concentrations of GV1001 and/or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for various time durations. The H2O2 decreased the viability of the NSCs in a concentration-dependent manner, with 200 mu M H2O2 significantly decreasing both proliferation and migration. However, treatment with GV1001 rescued the viability, proliferation and migration of H2O2 injured NSCs. Consistently, free radical levels were increased in rat NSCs treated with H2O2, while co-treatment with GV1001 significantly reduced these levels, especially the intracellular levels. In addition, GV1001 restored the expression of survival-related proteins and reduced the expression of death associated ones in NSCs treated with H2O2. In conclusion, GV1001 has antioxidant and neuroprotective effects in NSCs following treatment with H2O2, which appear to be mediated by scavenging free radicals, increasing survival signals and decreasing death signals.         Driving frequency dependency of gas species in the bubble formation for aqua-plasma generation

        Effects of voltage driving frequency on the gas composition, electrical and optical emission properties of aqua-plasmas generated in electrolyte solution, are investigated and the experiment was carried out in the range of 10 Hz-50 kHz. In the range of 10-300 Hz, H<SUB>2</SUB> dominated bubbles are generated and it is attributed to electrolysis. With increasing frequency, the gas composition inside the bubble changes to the H<SUB>2</SUB>O which can be determined from the observation of atomic H to OH(A-X) transition from the optical measurements of aqua-plasma. In higher frequency than 2 kHz, the boiling on the electrode dominates to the formation of the bubble. Consequently, the radicals and plasma properties are varied with the driving frequency.

      • Photocatalytic performance of highly transparent and mesoporous molybdenum-doped titania films fabricated by templating cellulose nanocrystals

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, the synthesis of mesoporous Mo-doped titania films templated by cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and their photocatalytic performance are reported for the first time. The prepared titania composite precursors containing the CNCs and molybdenum chloride were spin-coated on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrate, followed by calcining at 400 °C for 1 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and UV–vis spectrometer were employed to characterize the phase composition, pore structure, morphology, and optical property of the titania films in relation to CNCs templating and Mo doping. Photocatalytic performances of the titania films were also evaluated on the photodegradation of trichloroethylene under a fluorescent light source. The Mo-doped titania films with CNCs templating were highly transparent and mesoporous, exhibiting only anatase phase, high specific surface areas ranging in 135.4 – 149.0 m<SUP>2</SUP>/g, and small crystallite sizes of 9.5 – 11.1 nm. The results indicate that Mo ions were successfully doped by substituting for Ti ions in the titania lattice. The Mo doping stabilized the anatase phase and also increased the surface area of the CNCs-templated titania film while decreasing the mean pore width. Notably, the visible light absorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of the CNCs-templated titania films doped with Mo were dramatically greater than those of the pure and the CNCs-templated titania films, which is ascribed to the decreased recombination rate of photoexcited charges and the increased surface area with aids of the CNCs templating and the Mo doping.</P>

        Purpose: Investigate the level of Internet and smart phone addiction of college students and difference of their perception on the art therapy. Method: Data was collected using 4 categories of questionnaires. Participants of this study were 383 college students who are currently attending universities located in seoul, Kyung-Ki and Incheon. The Chi-square test, One-way Analysis of Variance, Scheffé test were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 23.0 Result: First, the study has established that the status of attending universities, grade, people who living with, age affected the level of Internet addiction of college students. In terms of the level of smart phone addiction of college students, the status of attending universities, gender, age were the affective factors. Second, there was a significant difference on the perception of the advantages of the art therapy and the level of acknowledging it, depending on the level of Internet addiction. Finally, depending on the level of smartphone addiction, there was a significant difference in the level of perception of the art therapy, expectation toward the art therapy and the helpfulness of art therapy. The more the participants are close to the addicted level, the more they want to experience the art therapy. Conclusion: These results suggest. First, it is necessary to use bigger group of participants. Second, it is necessary to improve the research methods for college students. Third, nurse should offer holistic care toward the patients regarding their general characteristics by adapting this study. Finally, it is necessary to improve the art therapy programs for the college students who are addicted to the Internet and smartphone and to develop researches proving the effectiveness of these programs.

        In nuclear power plant, the reactor cooling system has maintained high-Reynolds-number flow above 1E+07 to cool a heat generated by the reactor. To minimize uncertainty for flow calibration, it is necessary to install a flow simulation system to maintain the high-Reynolds-number flow. Y-connection is selected to connect four (4) parallel high flow circulation pumps for minimizing system pressure loss. This paper describes the characteristics for Y-connection by computer flow simulation. It was confirmed through the results that the pressure loss of the Y-connection was lower than that of T-connection, and that the pressure loss of the connection was similar sixty degree (60°) and below of connection angle.

        Hybrid architecture of rhodium oxide nanofibers and ruthenium oxide nanowires for electrocatalysts

        We report the synthesis and electrochemical performances of the hybrid architecture of rhodium oxide (Rh<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>) nanofibers (NF) and highly single crystalline RuO<SUB>2</SUB> nanowires (NW) by combining the electrospinning process and a simple recrystallization process. The amorphous Ru(OH)<SUB>3</SUB>.xH<SUB>2</SUB>O precursors at relatively low temperature were efficiently transformed into highly single crystalline RuO<SUB>2</SUB> nanowires with the tetragonal rutile structure on electrospun Rh<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofibers. Pure Rh<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> NF and hybrid RuO<SUB>2</SUB> NW-Rh<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> NF exhibited different electroactivities toward H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> electrochemical reaction: Rh<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> NF facilitates the H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> oxidation vs. hybrid RuO<SUB>2</SUB> NW-Rh<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> NF promotes H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> reduction more favorably. The H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> reduction free from O<SUB>2</SUB> reduction interference at RuO<SUB>2</SUB> NW-Rh<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> NF is advantageous and finds the feasibility for selective H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> detection in various samples. Furthermore, RuO<SUB>2</SUB> NW-Rh<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> NF generated a greatly higher current induced by H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> reduction (i.e., enhanced sensitivity to H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>) than bare Rh<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> NF.

      • Pharmacokinetics of prothionamide in patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.

        <P>SETTING: National Masan Tuberculosis Hospital, Masan, South Korea. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the pharmacokinetics of prothionamide (PTH) in South Korean patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and to investigate whether differences in body mass index (BMI) could explain observed differences in PTH disposition. DESIGN: Seventeen patients participated in the study; all had MDR-TB and had received combination anti-tuberculosis treatment, including PTH, cycloserine, ofloxacin, para-aminosalicylic acid and streptomycin or kanamycin, for at least 2 weeks. The patients were divided into two groups based on BMI: Group A (18.5 < or = BMI<23), and Group B (BMI<18.5). Serum samples were collected over 24 h, and the plasma PTH concentration was determined by a validated high-performance liquid chromatography assay. RESULTS: After steady-state administration of PTH, the mean area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time 0 to 12 h (AUC(0-12h)) was 11.0 +/- 3.7 microg h/ml. The mean T(max) and t(1/2) were respectively 3.6 h and 2.7 h. No significant difference in PTH disposition was observed between groups A and B, except for ke and t(1/2). CONCLUSION: In the pharmacokinetic parameter estimates for PTH in MDR-TB patients during routine treatment, the pharmacokinetics of PTH did not appear to correlate with extent of emaciation in MDR-TB patients.</P>

      • 1987년 한국에서 발생한 렙토스피라병의 혈청역학적 조사

        Human leptospirosis was an unfamiliar disease in Korea until 1984 that outbreak of leptospirosis occurred among farmers and soldiers after field works for harvesting rice. During that time, Lee and Jo confirmed the first Korean cases of leptospirosis by serological test, isolation of causative agent and autopy findings. Afterward several outbreaks occurred also during autumn especially after flood in every years and some characterisitcs of leptospirosis in Korea such as clinical manifestations, serotypes and seroepidemiological features has been revealed by many investigators. Because of the major mode of transmission between rodents and human is by direct contact with leptospiral urine of rodents or contaminated soil by the urine, leptospirosis in Korea has been primarily a disease of person in occupations heavily exposed to contaminated soil or infected urine such as farmer, army and etc. Therefore it seems that leptospirosis is one of the main communicable diseases to be controlled urgently in Korea, for an agricultural people account for almost half of total Korean people. For clarifying the seroepidemiological patterns of human leptospirosis in Korea by sex, month region and main reacting serovars of L. interrogans among acute febrile disease occurred in 1987, 1,773 patient's sers with acute febrile episodes were tested by microagglutination test using 19 representative strains of leptospiral serogroup as antigen. All of those sera were collected from 10 collaborative clinics located in Kyunggi, Kangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Chonbuk, Chonnam province and Seoul. The results wee summerized as follows. 1) Among 1,773 sera of patients with acute febrile episodes, 219 (12.4%) were seropositive to L. interrogans, 487(27.5%) to R. tsutsugamushi, 241(13.6%) to R.typhi and 160(90.0%) to Hantaan virus. 2) Among seropositives to L.interrogans, the male outnumbered the female, 65% and 35%. 3) For age distribution, 26.9% of seropositives to L.interrogans were fifties, 19.6% were forties, 9.1% were sixties, 5.9% were thirties and 4.1% were twenties. 4) Eighty three percent of seropositives had occurred between September and October in 1987 with a peak in September. 5) Main leptospiral serovars reactive to patient's sera were Icterohaemorrhagiae(54.3%), Canicola(31.0%), CH-48(13.2%), Tarassovi(0.9%)and Cynopteri(0.5%). 6) For regional distribution, 65.8% of seropositives to L.interrogans were residents from Chonbuk, 12.3% were Chonnam, 7.3% were Chungnam, 5.5% were Kyunggi and 1.4% were Kangwon.

(2011) <I>European Journal of Cancer Care</I><B>20</B>, 803–809</P><P><B>Satisfaction with mammography in the National Cancer Screening Programme participants of age 40s in Korea</B></P><P>The aim of this study was to evaluate satisfaction with the National Cancer Screening Programme of mammography in Korea and to examine the association between subscales of satisfaction and general satisfaction. We conducted a cross‐sectional telephone survey for women who had obtained a National Cancer Screening Programme mammographic screening at general hospitals between May and October 2008. The present study included 2005 women in their forties. We performed multivariate linear regression using dependent variable as general satisfaction and independent variables as subscales of satisfaction, such as pre‐screening information transfer, staff interpersonal skills, physical surroundings and results reporting. Participants were stratified according to the result of their mammogram as negative or positive. Mean score of satisfaction was above 2.5 of 4 for all subscales. Women who received positive results were less satisfied with all of subscale factors. Staff interpersonal skills were the most important factor that contributed to general satisfaction. Future efforts such as staff training programme of communication/attitude skills, ensuring privacy and explanation of possible discomfort of the screening would be needed.</P>

        An outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Korea, 2008

        In spite of intensive surveillance programs for the control of HPAI, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in Korea in April 2008 caused serious damage to poultry farms, as did previous outbreaks in 2003/2004 and 2006/2007. Six viruses were selected from the Korean 2008 isolates for genetic analysis, and all eight gene segments from each of the influenza viruses were sequenced. A phylogenetic analysis showed that all of the viruses were of the same virus type and that the hemagglutinin (HA) gene was clustered with that of clade 2.3.2 viruses. However, the internal and neuraminidase (NA) genes were closely related to those of the clade 2.3.4 viruses (recent human and bird isolates from Southeast Asia).
