        High-j Proton h11/2 and g7/2 Intruder Bands in 113In

        Ma Ke Yan,Lu Jing Bin,Ma Ying Jun,Li Jian,Yang Dong,Sun Wu Ji,Wang Hao,Pan Hao Nan,Wang Jia Qi,Yang Qing Yu,Zhang Da Ming,Zhu Li Hua,Wu Xiao Guang,Zheng Yun,Li Cong Bo 한국물리학회 2020 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.76 No.12

Excited states of 113In have been populated through the heavy-ion fusion evaporation reaction 110Pd(7Li, 4n)113In. A new band with the configuration of a proton d5/2 orbital is identified. Two ΔI = 2 intruder bands, built on the πh11/2 and the πg7/2 orbitals, have been extended to spins (63/2-)ħ and (55/2+)ħ, respectively. The negative-parity πh11/2 intruder band shows a smooth increase in aligned spin, which is attributed to a strong proton-neutron interaction. The properties of the positive-parity πg7/2 band are discussed based on tilted axis cranking model calculations, and the features of the antimagnetic rotation for this band are shown after backbend. Furthermore, the contributions of the two-shears-like mechanism, the neutron (gd)ν shell and the core rotation are investigated for the positive-parity πg7/2 band.

Does the recent warming hiatus exist over Northern Asia for winter wind chill temperature?

        Ma, Ying,Mao, Rui,Feng, Sheng‐,Hui,Gong, Dao‐,Yi,Kim, Seong‐,Joong John Wiley Sons, Ltd 2017 International journal of climatology Vol.37 No.7

<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>Wind chill temperature (WCT) describes the joint effect of wind velocity and air temperature on exposed body skin and could support policymakers in designing plans to reduce the risks of notably cold and windy weather. This study examined winter WCT over Northern Asia during 1973–2013 by analysing <I>in situ</I> station data. The winter WCT warming rate over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) slowed during 1999–2013 (−0.04 °C decade−1) compared with that of during 1973–1998 (0.67 °C decade−1). The winter WCT warming hiatus has also been observed in the remainder of Northern Asia with trends of 1.11 °C decade−1 during 1973–1998 but −1.02 °C decade−1 during 1999–2013, except for the Far East (FE) of Russia, where the winter WCT has continued to heat up during both the earlier period of 1973–1998 (0.54 °C decade−1) and the recent period of 1999–2013 (0.75 °C decade−1). The results indicate that the influence of temperature on winter WCT is greater than that of wind speed over Northern Asia. Atmospheric circulation changes associated with air temperature and wind speed were analysed to identify the causes for the warming hiatus of winter WCT over Northern Asia. The distributions of sea‐level pressure and 500‐hPa height anomalies during 1999–2013 transported cold air from the high latitudes to middle latitudes, resulting in low air temperature over Northern Asia except for the FE of Russia. Over the TP, the increase in wind speed offset the increase in air temperature during 1999–2013. For the FE, the southerly wind from the Western Pacific drove the temperature up during the 1999–2013 period through warm advection.</P>

Deficiency of Follistatin-Like Protein 1 Accelerates the Growth of Breast Cancer Cells at Lung Metastatic Sites

        Ying Zhang,Xiaozhou Xu,Ying Yang,Jie Ma,Lulu Wang,Xiangzhi Meng,Bing Chen,Ling Qin,Tao Lu,Yan Gao 한국유방암학회 2018 Journal of breast cancer Vol.21 No.3

Purpose: Follistatin-like protein 1 (FSTL1) is a secreted glycoprotein that has been shown to play a role in various types of cancer. However, the clinical significance and function of FSTL1 in breast cancer have not been reported. We investigated the role of FSTL1 in breast cancer in this study. Methods: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, western blot analysis, and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction were used to monitor the expression of FSTL1 in breast cancer tissue and in serum samples from breast cancer patients. We employed a 4T1 breast cancer model and Fstl1+/− mice for in vivo studies. Hematoxylin and eosin staining, western blot analysis, and RNA sequencing were used to analyze the effect of FSTL1 on primary tumor growth and lung metastasis. Results: We demonstrated that the expression of FSTL1 is reduced in both the breast cancer tissue and the serum of breast cancer patients. We showed that reduced levels of FSTL1 in serum correlate with elevated expression of Ki-67 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in cancer tissues. Moreover, lowered expression of FSTL1 was associated with decreased survival in breast cancer patients. Experiments on the Fstl1+/− mouse model established that FSTL1 deficiency had no effect on primary tumor growth, but increased the lung metastases of breast cancer cells, resulting in reduced survival of tumor-bearing mice. RNA sequencing found significantly reduced expression of Egln3 and increased expression of EGFR in Fstl1+/− mice. Thus, our results suggest that FSTL1 may affect the expression of EGFR through Egln3, inhibiting the proliferation of breast cancer cells at lung metastatic sites. Conclusion: In conclusion, we suggest a suppressor role of FSTL1 in breast cancer lung metastasis. Furthermore, FSTL1 may represent a potential prognostic biomarker and a candidate therapeutic target in breast cancer patients.

      • Expression and Clinical Significance of miRNA-34a in Colorectal Cancer

        Ma, Zhi-Bin,Kong, Xiao-Lin,Cui, Gang,Ren, Cui-Cui,Zhang, Ying-Jie,Fan, Sheng-Jin,Li, Ying-Hua Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.21

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate differences of miRNA-34a expression in benign and malignant colorectal lesions. Materials and Methods: Samples of cancer, paraneoplastic tissues and polyps were selected and total RNA was extracted by conventional methods for real-time PCR to detect the miRNA-34a expression. In addition, the LOVO colorectal cancer cell line was cultured, treated with the demethylating agent 5-azacytidine and screened for differentially expressed miRNA-34a. Results: After the drug treatment, the miRNA-34a expression of colorectal cancer cell line LOVO was increased and real-time PCR showed that levels of expression in both cell line and colorectal cancer tissues were low, as compared to paraneoplastic tissue (p<0.05). Polyps tissues had significantly higher expression than paraneoplastic and colorectal cancer samples (p<0.05). Conclusions: miRNA-34a-5p may play a role as a tumor suppressor gene in colorectal cancer, with involvement of DNA methylation.

A Filament Level Analysis on 3-D Orthogonal Weave Microgeometry Modeling under Different Yarn Tension

        Ying Ma,Yueyan Liu,Congying Deng,Xiang Chen,Yang Zhao,Sheng Lu,Youqi Wang 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.10

3-D woven textile is generated through the weaving process. Yarn is a non-continuum material domain, thestructure of which is determined by inter fiber movement. In this study, the micro-geometry of 3-D orthogonal weave isgenerated at filament level predicting through the weaving process implementing the digital element approach (DEA). First, the basic concepts and explicit algorithm of DEA is introduced. The method of calculating adjusted digital fiber materialproperty in terms of discretization resolution is proposed. Second, the unit-cell topology of 3-D orthogonal weave is definedby a position matrix. The calculation of potential energy of the cell is derived. At last, a dynamic weaving process is designedto investigate the effect of yarn tension on fabric micro-geometry and cell energy. 4 unit-cells are generated under 4 sets oftension combination. Results show that as the fabric thickness decrease, the filaments of the weft yarns move towards thecenter. The weft yarns at the top and bottom deform into their final shape first. The applied tension on weaver plays adominant role in determining fabric thickness and convergence speed. By comparing the numerical results with themicroscope pictures taken from the actual specimen, it is concluded that the fabric micro-geometry produced by tensioncombination 4 closely matches the experimental results.

      • The Effect of Gender Composition of Research Teams on Individual Researchers’ Performance in China

Ying Ma 과학기술정책연구원 2017 STI Policy Review Vol.8 No.2

This article explores the relationship between the gender composition of scientific research teams and scientists’ individual performance. The gender composition of research teams is an important feature of workplace settings and influences the way people interact and communicate; however, previous research has not directly examined its relationship with scientists’ individual performance. Drawing on data collected on university faculties in China in 2016, this article tests several hypotheses about individual’s performance in teams with different gender compositions. The results show that team gender composition has a clear gendered effect on scientists’ individual performance. The effects of tokenism for women in men-majority teams is proven, but men in women-majority teams appear to be unaffected by tokenism. Moreover, the theories claiming that homogenous teams are more conducive to better individual performance than mixed teams are supported for men but not for women. The findings of this research suggest that recruiting more women into the scientific workforce may improve their performance and thereby help diminish the gender gap in performance. It also indicates that the Chinese preferential policies towards women in science formulated in recent years have had positive impacts. However, considering that more than half of the researchers in the survey are working in men-majority teams, the task of narrowing the gender gap in performance remains a challenge. Further work is needed to explore the tensions and benefits of working with the opposite gender.

Flow Factor Prediction of Centrifugal Hydraulic Turbine for Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO)

Ma, Ying,Kadaj, Eric,Terrasi, Kevin Korean Society for Fluid machinery 2010 International journal of fluid machinery and syste Vol.3 No.4

The creation of the hydraulic turbine flow factor map will undoubtedly benefit its design by decreasing both the design cycle time and product cost. In this paper, the geometry and flow variables, which effectively affect the flow factor, are proposed, analyzed and determined. These flow variables are further used to create the operating condition maps by using different model approaches categorized into Response Surface Method (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The accuracies of models created by different approaches are compared and the performances of model approaches are analyzed. The influences of chosen variables and the combination of Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and model approaches are also studied. The comparison results between predicted and actual flow factors suggest that two-hidden-layer Feed-forward Neural Network (FFNN), and one.hidden-layer FFNN with PCA has the best performance on forming this mapping, and are accurate sufficiently for hydraulic turbine design.

A Qualitative Exploration of an Eight-Week Mindful Parenting Program for Parents

        Ying Ma,Angela F. Y. Siu 한국상담학회 2016 Journal of Asia Pacific counseling Vol.6 No.2

Mindful parenting is a relatively new extension of mindfulness and is beneficial for the well-being of both parents and their children. In this study, an eight-week mindful parenting program was conducted in a Hong Kong community. The qualitative method was adopted to explore how the program could benefit parents with stress and parenting problems. Six participants were included in the interviews. Analysis of the qualitative data suggested four themes: enhanced emotion regulation, more compassion, positive changes in the parent-child relationship, and home practice consistency and obstacles. The practical implications of the mindful parenting program to improve parents’ emotion regulation and parent-child relationships are addressed. The limitations of this study and future research directions are also discussed.
