      • An Insect Counting and Recognition Method for Greenhouse Insect Pests on Sticky Paper using Convolutional Neural Network

        Greenhouses are built to promote crop growth, but the same environment also allows pests to reproduce and affect crops. Placing sticky papers in the greenhouse allows monitoring of the number of insect pests in order to predict the breakout of insects and to take appropriate action. Currently, the insect pests on sticky papers are counted and identified by manual inspection which is very time consuming and laborious. In this study, an automatic counting and recognition system for whiteflies and thrips using a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach was developed. The system makes use of a scanner to scan the images of sticky papers with insects and to recognize the objects as whiteflies or thrips. A graphical user interface (GUI) is provided; it was designed using Qt with an OpenCV image processing library. To apply CNN for object detection and recognition, we used the YOLO (You Only Look Once) real-time object detection tool. The sticky papers were collected from several greenhouses and preserved by using cellophane sheets as cover. They were then scanned to obtain high resolution images. Insect image samples were labeled from the scanned sticky paper images to train the CNN object detector model. The object detector model was further optimized in terms of iteration time, detection threshold level, and sample image size. The optimized average recognition accuracies were 86.30% and 90.45% for whitefly and thrip, respectively. This work can be used for automated insect sticky paper checking which is necessary for quarantine purposes.

      • H.264 부호화를 위한 화면내 예측 간소화 방법

        H.264의 동영상 부호화에서는 현재 화면의 이웃한 화소들을 이용하는 화면내 예측부호화 기법을 사용하고 있다. 기존 MPEG 1, 2 화면내 부호화 가법에 비해 화질의 개선은 달성하였으나 영상의 부호화 과정에서 영상의 종류와 관계없이 다수 개(9개)의 예측부호화 모드가 사용됨으로써 화면내 부호화 과정에서 연산량이 증가된다. 본 논문에서는 예측모드 사용의 빈도수에 따라 사용빈도가 적은 예측모드가 생략하고 화면내 예측부호화 함으로써 예측모드를 간소화시킨다.

        양자화 복원 레벨 개수 증대로 발생되는 부가정보 감소방법

        스칼라 양자화기는 구현이 간단하기 때문에 각종 영상부호화기법에서 많이 사용되고 있다. 스칼라 양자화기는 큰 양자화 계단크기를 사용하여 데이터양을 많이 줄일 수 있으나, 반대로 복원된 영상화질이 많이 나빠지는 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 양자화 계단크기를 그대로 유지하면서 양자화 복원 레벨 개수를 증대시킴으로 인해 부호화 성능이 개선될 수 있는 방법을 제안한다. 동시에 양자화 복원 레벨 개수가 증대됨에 따라 복원 레벨 영역에 해당되는 심볼 정보를 추가적으로 전송해 주어야 하는 문제점이 발생하며, 이를 해결하기 위하여 부가 심볼 정보를 감소시키는 방법도 제안한다. H.264 동영상 부호화에서 화면내 부호화 화면에는 4X4(수평방향 4화소, 수직방향 4화소) 블록단위로 복원 영역의 심볼 정보에 허프만 부호화를 적용하고, 화면간 부호화 화면에는 매크로블록내의 8X8블록과 4X4블록에 대해 복원 영역의 심볼 정보를 허프만 부호화한다. 이를 통하여 양자화 복원 레벨 개수 증대로 발생되는 부가정보를 줄임으로써 같은 부호화율에서 부호화성능이 개선됨을 보인다. Because it is easy to implement the scalar quantizer, it is used in various video coding systems. Although the scalar quantizer with a large quantization stepsize can reduce the amount of data, it has disadvantage that the reconstructed picture quality is poor. In this paper, we propose an efficient method which improves the coding performance by maintaining original quantization stepsize and increasing the number of quantization reconstruction levels. Simultaneously, for the purpose of solving the problem of transmitting the added symbol informations which is used to indicate the region of quantizer reconstruction level as the number of quantizer reconstruction level is increased, we also suggest the method to reduce the added informations. Therefore, for the intra-coded picture of H.264 video coding system, we generate the huffman codes for the symbol informations of quantization reconstruction regions by 4X4(horizontal 4 pixels, vertical pixels) block unit. Furthermore, for the inter-coded picture, we also generate the huffman codes for the symbol informations of quantization reconstruction regions by 8X8 blocks and 4X4 blocks within a macroblock. Adopting this method of reducing the added information by increasing the number of quantization reconstruction region, It is shown that the coding performance can be improved at the same bitrate.

      • Conventional Ultrasonography and Real Time Ultrasound Elastography in the Differential Diagnosis of Degenerating Cystic Thyroid Nodules Mimicking Malignancy and Papillary Thyroid Carcinomas

        Background: To evaluate the diagnostic utility of conventional ultrasonography and real time ultrasound elastography in differentiating degenerating cystic thyroid nodules mimicking malignancy from papillary thyroid carcinoma. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed conventional ultrasonographic and elastographic characteristics of 19 degenerating cystic thyroid nodules mimicking malignancy in 19 patients, with 30 surgically confirmed PTCs as controls. Based on size, the nodules had been grouped into less than 10mm (group A) and greater than 10 mm (group B). We evaluated conventional parameters and elasticity pattern. Color-scaled elastograms were graded as to stiffness of nodules using an elasticity pattern from I (soft) to IV (stiff). Results: Degenerating cystic thyroid nodules were similar to PTCs in conventional ultrasonographic findings, but the former frequently showed oval to round in shape (group A, 69.2% vs 18.8%, P=0.017; group B, 66.7% vs 7.14%, P=0.017) and punctuate hyperechoic foci (group A, 61.5% vs 0, P<0.001; group B, 50% vs 0, P<0.001). On real time ultrasound elastography, 7 of 13 degenerating cystic thyroid nodules in group A were pattern I, 5 were pattern II, 1 was pattern III. One degenerating cystic thyroid nodule in group B was pattern II, 5 were pattern III. The area under the curve for elastography was 0.98 in group A (sensitivity 92.3%, specificity 100%, P = 0.002), and 0.88 in group B (sensitivity 16.7%, specificity 100%, P = 0.014). Conclusions: As a dependable imaging technique, elastography helps increase the performance in differential diagnosis of degenerating cystic thyroid nodule and malignancy.

        Radix ranunculus temate saponins induces apoptosis via the death receptor and mitochondrial pathways in SGC-7901 cells

        Radix ranunculus temate saponins (RRTS), one of the main constituents extracted from the popular traditional Chinese medicine Radix Ranunculi ternati, has been reported to have various biological activities including anti-cancer effect. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of RRTS on the cell proliferation and apoptosis in human gastric adenocarcinoma SGC-7901 cells. The data showed that exposure to RRTS for 24 h produced cytotoxic effects on SGC- 7901 cells in a dose-dependent manner (with an IC50 value of 21.22±2.76 μg/mL), which was accompanied by apoptosis induction (from 2.18±0.89% (control) to 63.72±13.16% (100 μg/mL)). Both the extrinsic or death receptor pathway and the intrinsic or mitochondrial pathway were involved in RRTS-induced apoptosis in SGC-7901 cells. Furthermore, apoptotic signaling induced by RRTS was amplified by cross-link between the two pathways via the signal-integrating protein Bid. In conclusion, our findings contribute to better understanding the molecular mechanism of RRTS’ effect on gastric cancer cells and form the basis of the therapeutic development of RRTS in treating gastric cancer in the future.

        Genome‑wide identification of GMP genes in Rosaceae and functional characterization of FaGMP4 in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa)

        Background GDP-D-mannose pyrophosphorylase (GMP) is one of the key enzymes determining ascorbic acid (AsA) biosynthesis. However, little information about GMP genes is currently available for the Rosaceae species, especially in the AsA-riched cultivated octoploid strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa). Objective To identify the all the GMP genes in Rosaceae, as well as the predominant homologues and the role of GMP genes in strawberry AsA accumulation. Methods In the present study, we performed genome-wide identifcation and comprehensive analysis of the duplicated GMP genes in strawberry and other Rosaceae species by bioinformatics methods, the expression of the GMP genes from cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa, FaGMP) was specifcally analyzed by qPCR. Finally, the FaGMP4 was transiently overexpressed in strawberry to estimate the role of GMP in regulating AsA accumulation in strawberry. Results As results, a total of 28 GMP genes were identifed in the fve Rosaceae species. The origins of duplication events analysis suggested that most GMP duplications in Rosaceae species were generated from whole genome duplication (WGD). The Ka/Ks ratio suggested that FaGMP genes underwent a stabilization selection. qPCR based expression analysis showed diferent patterns of FaGMP paralogs during fruit ripening, while FaGMP4 expressed higher in the variety containing higher AsA. Overexpression of FaGMP4 in strawberry signifcantly enhanced AsA accumulation. Furthermore, the expression of FaGMP4 under the treatment of blue and red light was largely increased in leaves while signifcantly inhibited in fruit. These results revealed the vital role of FaGMP4 in regulating AsA in strawberry.

      • ABO Blood Group, Epstein-Barr virus Infection and Prognosis of Patients with Non-metastatic Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

        Background: A prior study showed blood type A/AB to be associated with an increased risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) compared to subjects with blood type O. However, the relationship between ABO blood groups and prognosis of NPC patients is still questionable. In addition, whether Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is associated with prognosis of NPC patients with different ABO blood groups is unclear. Materials and Methods: We conducted univariate and multivariable Cox regression analyses based on a consecutive cohort of 1,601 patients to investigate the above issues. Results: There was no significant difference in overall survival (OS) between different ABO blood groups (p=0.629), neither between A vs. non-A blood groups (p=0.895) nor AB vs. non-AB blood group (p=0.309) in univariate analyses and after adjusting for other factors. Interaction tests revealed that high immunoglobulin A against Epstein-Barr virus viral capsid antigen (VcA-IgA) level was associated with a favorable prognosis in male patients with UICC stage II disease who had an A blood type (p=0.008), compared with those with non-A blood type. In addition, male patients with an A blood group with a high blood lymphocyte level showeda tendency towards better survival in UICC stage III (p=0.096). Conclusions: ABO blood group status is not associated with the prognosis of patients with NPC. Additionally, blood group A male NPC patients with high VcA-IgA level or high blood lymphocyte counts might be correlated with a favorable prognosis in UICC stage II or III, respectively.

        Changes in Glucose Metabolism after Adrenalectomy or Treatment with a Mineralocorticoid Receptor Antagonist for Primary Aldosteronism

        Background: Data on the effects of excess aldosterone on glucose metabolism are inconsistent. This study compared the changes in glucose metabolism in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) after adrenalectomy or treatment with a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA). Methods: Overall, 241 patients were enrolled; 153 underwent adrenalectomy and 88 received an MRA. Fasting glucose, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and homeostatic model assessment of β-cell function (HOMA-β) were compared between the treatment groups after 1 year. Plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) and factors determining HOMA-IR and PAC were evaluated. Results: No baseline differences were observed between the groups. Fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, and HOMA-β increased in both groups and there were no significant differences in fasting glucose following treatment. Multiple regression analysis showed associations between PAC and HOMA-IR (β=0.172, P=0.017) after treatment. Treatment with spironolactone was the only risk factor associated with PAC >30 ng/dL (odds ratio, 5.2; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.7 to 10; P<0.001) and conferred a 2.48-fold risk of insulin resistance after 1 year compared with surgery (95% CI, 1.3 to 4.8; P=0.007). Conclusion: Spironolactone treatment might increase insulin resistance in patients with PA. This strengthened the current recommendation that adrenalectomy is the preferred strategy for patient with positive lateralization test. Achieving a post-treatment PAC of <30 ng/dL for improved insulin sensitivity may be appropriate.
