Adjustable and extensible hexagonal acoustic metamaterial cell combining multiple parallel Helmholtz resonators with optional apertures

        Fei Yang,Shaohua Bi,Xinmin Shen,Xiaocui Yang,Xinqing Wang,Xiangpo Zhang,Jinhong Xue,Xiaonan Zhang,Qin Yin,Juying Dai,Wenqiang Peng,Jingwei Zhu,Junhong Ren 대한기계학회 2023 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.37 No.12

To prevent noise pollution, a hexagonal acoustic metamaterial cell combining multiple parallel Helmholtz resonators with optional apertures is proposed. There were 6 trapezoidal chambers and 6 triangular chambers, and each front panel had 6 different apertures, which meant that there were 6 12 = 2176782336 possible permutations. The distribution of sound pressures obtained by acoustic finite element simulation revealed the acoustic absorption mechanism, which provided effective guidance to alter the absorption capacity. For certain scenarios, the acoustic absorption performance was optimized by the joint combination of artificial neural network and acoustic finite element simulation. Through manufacturing and testing the sample, actual average acoustic absorption coefficients were achieved at 0.6733, 0.7296, 0.8785 and 0.7065 for the target frequency ranges 350-950 Hz, 400-1000 Hz, 500-800 Hz and 350-700 Hz, respectively, with total thickness 40 mm. The tunable acoustic absorption property proved that the hexagonal acoustic metamaterial cell was appropriate for noise reduction with variable frequency ranges.

Evaluation and modeling of methyl green adsorption from aqueous solutions using loofah fibers

        Xiaonan Tang,Yueyun Li,Runhai Chen,Fanlian Min,Juanjuan Yang,Yunhui Dong 한국화학공학회 2015 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.32 No.1

Loofah fiber, an economical adsorbent material, was first developed for the methyl green (MG) removalfrom aqueous solutions. The loofah fibers were characterized by SEM, FTIR, N2-BET and the potentiometric titration. The pH, contact time and temperature were examined extensively. The adsorption of MG on loofah fiber increasedvery quickly in the pH range 3.0 to 7.0, remaining a high level at pH>7.0. The kinetics of adsorption of MG on theloofah fiber was proved to coincide with pseudo-second-order kinetic models (r2>0.99) very well. Langmuir isothermwas demonstrated to fit the experimental data better than Freundlich isotherm model. Monolayer adsorption capacityincreased with the increase of temperature. Thermodynamic constants were evaluated, and the results indicated thatMG adsorption onto loofah fiber was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic. The high removal efficiency of MG onloofah fiber suggested that the loofah fiber was suitable material in MG pollution cleanup.

Lactobacillus salivarius Strain FDB89 Induced Longevity in Caenorhabditis elegans by Dietary Restriction

        Yang Zhao,Liang Zhao,Xiaonan Zheng,Tianjiao Fu,Huiyuan Guo,Fazheng Ren 한국미생물학회 2013 The journal of microbiology Vol.51 No.2

In this study, we utilized the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to assess potential life-expanding effect of Lactobacillus salivarius strain FDB89 (FDB89) isolated from feces of centenarians in Bama County (Guangxi, China). This study showed that feeding FDB89 extended the mean life span in C. elegans by up to 11.9% compared to that of control nematodes. The reduced reproductive capacities, pharyngeal pumping rate, growth, and increased superoxide dismutase (SOD)activity and XTT reduction capacity were also observed in FDB89 feeding worms. To probe the anti-aging mechanism further, we incorporated a food gradient feeding assay and assayed the life span of eat-2 mutant. The results demonstrated that the maximal life span of C. elegans fed on FDB89was achieved at the concentration of 1.0 mg bacterial cells/plate, which was 10-fold greater than that of C. elegans fed on E. coli OP50 (0.1 mg bacterial cells/plate). However, feeding FDB89 could not further extend the life span of eat-2mutant. These results indicated that FDB89 modulated the longevity of C. elegans in a dietary restriction-dependent manner and expanded the understanding of anti-aging effect of probiotics.

Equol Induces Mitochondria-Dependent Apoptosis in Human Gastric Cancer Cells via the Sustained Activation of ERK1/2 Pathway

Yang, Zhiping,Zhao, Yan,Yao, Yahong,Li, Jun,Wang, Wangshi,Wu, Xiaonan Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2016 Molecules and cells Vol.39 No.10

The cancer chemo-preventive effects of equol have been demonstrated for a wide variety of experimental tumours. In a previous study, we found that equol inhibited proliferation and induced apoptotic death of human gastric cancer MGC-803 cells. However, the mechanisms underlying equol-mediated apoptosis have not been well understood. In the present study, the dual AO (acridine orange)/EB (ethidium bromide) fluorescent assay, the comet assay, MTS, western blotting and flow cytometric assays were performed to further investigate the pro-apoptotic effect of equol and its associated mechanisms in MGC-803 cells. The results demonstrated that equol induced an apoptotic nuclear morphology revealed by AO/EB staining, the presence of a comet tail, the cleavage of caspase-3 and PARP and the depletion of cIAP1, indicating its pro-apoptotic effect. In addition, equol-induced apoptosis involves the mitochondria-dependent cell-death pathway, evidenced by the depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential, the cleavage of caspase-9 and the depletion of Bcl-xL and full-length Bid. Moreover, treating MGC-803 cells with equol induced the sustained activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), and inhibiting ERK by U0126, a MEK/ERK pathway inhibitor, significantly attenuated the equol-induced cell apoptosis. These results suggest that equol induces mitochondria-dependent apoptosis in human gastric cancer MGC-803 cells via the sustained activation of the ERK1/2 pathway. Therefore, equol may be a novel candidate for the chemoprevention and therapy of gastric cancer.

Glycyrrhetic acid monoglucuronide: sweetness concentration–response and molecular mechanism as a naturally high-potency sweetener

        Yongan Yang,Yuangang Wei,Xiaonan Guo,Pengfei Qi,Hailiang Zhu,Wenjian Tang 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.4

Glycyrrhetic acid monoglucuronide (GAM) isobtained from the natural sweetener glycyrrhizin throughenzymolysis. Its sweetness concentration–response (C–R)behavior in room-temperature in water was determinedusing two-alternative forced choice discrimination tests. The C–R equation of resultant hyperbolic curve relatingsucrose equivalent (SE, %) to GAM concentration([GAM], mg/L) was SE = 19.6 9 [GAM]/(194.8 ? [GAM]). From the C–R function, Pw (2) ofGAM, relative to a 2% (w/v) sucrose reference, is morethan 900, which has much higher potency than its precursorglycyrrhizin. Molecular modeling showed that GAM isfinely bound into protein 1EWK through conventionalhydrogen bonds, p-Alkyl interactions and Van der Waalsbonds, which exhibited better protein inclusion than Glycyrrhizin. Thus, GAM could be developed

Transparent Lamellar Porous Material and Its Greatly Reduced Dielectric Constant

        Lili Liu,Cuijiao Zhao,Yawen Huang,Xiaonan Wei,Hongtao Yu,Junxiao Yang 한국고분자학회 2017 Macromolecular Research Vol.25 No.10

One trend for low dielectric materials is to reach low dielectric constant values at as low porosity as possible. In this work, a lamellar porous material was prepared by spin-coating of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanosheet composited film, followed by cross-linking of PVA and removing nanosheets. FTIR, XRD and TGA measurement results demonstrate that the templates were almost completely removed. SEM image shows that the etched PVA film has a lamellar porous structure. Dielectric test results indicate that at the porosity of only 17.5%, the dielectric constant of porous PVA is reduced to approximately half that of neat cross-linked PVA. The serial model shows a good consistence with experimental dielectric constant value. This explains well the high efficiency of lamellar porous structure in reducing dielectric constant.

Genomic Correlates of Unfavorable Outcome in Locally Advanced Cervical Cancer Treated with Neoadjuvant Chemoradiation

        Yuchun Wei,Chuqing Wei,Liang Chen,Ning Liu,Qiuxiang Ou,Jiani C. Yin,Jiaohui Pang,Zhenhao Fang,Xue Wu,Xiaonan Wang,Dianbin Mu,Yang Shao,Jinming Yu,Shuanghu Yuan 대한암학회 2022 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.54 No.4

Purpose Neoadjuvant therapy modality can increase the operability rate and mitigate pathological risks in locally advanced cervical cancer, but treatment response varies widely. It remains unclear whether genetic alterations correlate with the response to neoadjuvant therapy and disease-free survival (DFS) in locally advanced cervical cancer. Materials and Methods A total of 62 locally advanced cervical cancer (stage IB-IIA) patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation plus radical hysterectomy were retrospectively analyzed. Patients’ tumor biopsy samples were comprehensively profiled using targeted next generation sequencing. Pathologic response to neoadjuvant treatment and DFS were evaluated against the association with genomic traits. Results Genetic alterations of PIK3CA were most frequent (37%), comparable to that of Caucasian populations from The Cancer Genome Atlas. The mutation frequency of genes including TERT, POLD1, NOS2, and FGFR3 was significantly higher in Chinese patients whereas RPTOR, EGFR, and TP53 were underrepresented in comparison to Caucasians. Germline mutations were identified in 21% (13/62) of the cohort and more than half (57%) had mutations in DNA damage repair genes, including BRCA1/2, TP53 and PALB2. Importantly, high tumor mutation burden, TP53 polymorphism (rs1042522), and KEAP1 mutations were found to be associated with poor pathologic response to neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment. KEAP1 mutations, PIK3CA-SOX2 co-amplification, TERC copy number gain, and TYMS polymorphism correlated with an increased risk of disease relapse. Conclusion We report the genomic profile of locally advanced cervical cancer patients and the distinction between Asian and Caucasian cohorts. Our findings highlight genomic traits associated with unfavorable neoadjuvant chemoradiation response and a higher risk of early disease recurrence.
