The user experience of practical indoor power line communication (PLC) applications is greatly affected by the system quality-of-service (QoS) criteria. With a general broadcast- and-multi-access (BMA) relay scheme, in this work we investigate the joint source and relay power optimization of the amplify-and-forward (AF) relay systems used under indoor broad- band PLC environments. To achieve both time diversity and spatial diversity from the relay- involved PLC channel, which is time-varying in nature, the source node has been configured to transmit an identical message twice in the first and second signalling phase, respectively. The QoS constrained power allocation problem is not convex, which makes the global optimal solution is computationally intractable. To solve this problem, an alternating optimization (AO) method has been adopted and decomposes this problem into three convex/quasi-convex sub-problems. Simulation results show the fast convergence and short delay of the proposed algorithm under realistic relay-involved PLC channels. Compared with the two-hop and broadcast-and- forward (BF) relay systems, the proposed general relay system meets the same QoS requirement with less network power assumption.
Gasoline Desulfurization by Catalytic Alkylation over Methanesulfonic Acid

Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) was used as catalyst to remove trace organic sulfur (thiophene) from Fluid Catalytic Cracking gasoline (FCC) via alkylation with olefins. The reactions were conducted in Erlenmeyer flask equipped with a water-bath under atmospheric pressure. The influence of the temperature, the reaction time, and the mass ration of MSA were investigated. After a 60 min reaction time at 343 K, the thiophene conversion of 98.7% was obtained with a mass ration of MSA to oil of 10%. The catalyst was reused without a reactivation treatment, and the thiophene conversion reached 92.9% at the third time. The method represents an environmentally benign route to desulfur, because MSA could easily be separated from the reaction mixture via decantation and it could be reused.

Transcriptome profile of one-month-old lambs' granulosa cells after superstimulation

Objective: Superstimulatory treatment of one-month-old lambs can achieve synchronous development of numerous growing follicles. However, these growing follicles cannot complete maturation and ovulation. Oocyte maturation and competence are acquired during follicular development, in which granulosa cells play an essential role. Methods: In this study, we applied RNA sequencing to analyze and compare gene expression between prepubertal and adult superstimulated follicle granulosa cells in sheep. Results: There were more than 300 genes that significantly differed in expression. Among these differently expressed genes, many extracellular matrix genes (EGF containing Fibulin Like Extracellular Matrix Protein 1, pentraxin 3, adrenomedullin, and osteopontin) were significantly down-regulated in the superstimulated follicles. Ingenuity pathway and gene ontology analyses revealed that processes of axonal guidance, cell proliferation and DNA replication were expressed at higher levels in the prepubertal follicles. Epidermal growth factor, T-Box protein 2 and beta-estradiol upstream regulator were predicted to be active in prepubertal follicles. By comparison, tumor protein P53 and let-7 were most active in adult follicles. Conclusion: These results may contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms governing the development of granulosa cells in the growing follicle in prepubertal sheep.

Background Membranous nephropathy is characterized by deposition of immune complex. The initial inflammatory responses induce cell apoptosis and oxidative injury, thus contributing to the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease. Esculentoside A exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidant abilities, and protects against acute kidney injury. Objective The renoprotective effect of Esculentoside A on a rat model with membranous nephropathy was investigated in this study. Results Injection of cationic bovine serum albumin promoted the level of 24 h proteinuria, and induced histopathological damage, including glomerular atrophy and thick glomerular basement membrane in the kidney tissues. Intraperitoneal injection with Esculentoside A reduced the level of 24 h proteinuria, and attenuated the pathological damages. Esculentoside A attenuated cationic bovine serum albumin-induced reduction of Bcl-2 protein expression, enhancements in the protein expressions of Bax and cleaved caspase-3. Besides, the enhanced levels of MDA (malondialdehyde) and NO (nitric oxide), and reduced levels of SOD (superoxide dismutase) and GSH (glutathione), in rats with membranous nephropathy were restored by Esculentoside A injection. Moreover, Esculentoside A counteracted with the promotive effects of cationic bovine serum albumin on the protein expressions of phosphorylated JNK (p-JNK), p-ERK1/2 and p-p38. Conclusion The renoprotective effects of Esculentoside A on a rat model with membranous nephropathy was mediated by its anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic effects through inactivation of MAPKs pathway.
Evaluation of Cofactor Markers for Controlling Genetic Background Noise in QTL Mapping

In order to control the genetic background noise in QTL mapping, cofactor markers were incorporated in single marker analysis (SMACO) and interval mapping (CIM). A simulation was performed to see how effective the cofactors were by the number of QTL, the number and the type of markers, and the marker spacing. The results of QTL mapping for the simulated data showed that the use of cofactors was slightly effective when detecting a single QTL. On the other hand, a considerable improvement was observed when dealing with more than one QTL. Genetic background noise was efficiently absorbed with linked markers rather than unlinked markers. Furthermore, the efficiency was different in QTL mapping depending on the type of linked markers. Well-chosen markers in both SMACO and CIM made the range of linkage position for a significant QTL narrow and the estimates of QTL effects accurate. Generally, 3 to 5 cofactors offered accurate results. Over-fitting was a problem with many regressor variables when the heritability was small. Various marker spacing from 4 to 20 cM did not change greatly the detection of multiple QTLs, but they were less efficient when the marker spacing exceeded 30 cM. Likelihood ratio increased with a large heritability, and the threshold heritability for QTL detection was between 0.30 and 0.05.

Poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-butyl acrylate) (PNIPAM-BA) hydrogels were synthesized by copolymerization of N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) with butyl acrylate (BA), which have been proposed as adsorbents for the efficient removal of hydrophobic organic pollutants, e.g. pentachlorophenol (PCP). Adsorption experiments showed high removal efficiencies of PCP. The isotherm experimental data of PCP fitted Langmuir model, and the adsorption capacity of PNIPAM-11% BA hydrogel was greater than that of the original PNIPAM hydrogel. It is possibly due to the enhanced interaction between the hydrophobically modified hydrogels and PCP. Moreover, the PNIPAM-BA hydrogels could be easily recycled by the desorption process at 323 K in solution.
Experimental and Numerical Research on Uplift-Restricted and Slip-Permitted Screw-Shaped Connectors

Improving mechanical performance of the negative moment regions of continuous composite beams is essential for composite beam bridges. Uplift-restricted and slip-permitted (URSP) screw-shaped connectors can enhance the crack resistance of a concrete slab through free slip between the concrete slab and the steel beam. Furthermore, URSP screw-shaped connectors are more adaptable to the requirements of rapid construction than URSP T-shaped connectors. To investigate the slip and mechanical behavior of URSP screw-shaped connectors, nine push-out tests with various parameters were conducted. In these tests, the thickness of the foam sleeve wrapped outside the screw exerted a highly signifi cant eff ect on free slip performance. A refi ned 3D nonlinear fi nite element model with the foam’s constitutive model was established using ABAQUS. The stress mechanism and failure modes of the FE models were analyzed. Lastly, to estimate the slip performance of URSP screw-shaped connectors, an equation with a simple form was proposed via mechanism analysis and a regression method.
