In this study, the pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) of total phenolic content (TPC), gallic acid (GA), andp-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) from Pseuderanthemum palatiferum (Nees) Radlk. leaves was optimizedusing response surface methodology. The extract at the optimum conditions of TPC, namely OP, was characterizedusing GC–MS, HPLC, and spectrophotometry analysis. Furthermore, bio-functional properties ofthe OP, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antihypertensive activities, and cytotoxicity against cancerand normal cell lines, were also investigated. The results showed that all extraction models were appropriatein predicting the extraction processes (p < 0.05) of the target compounds. In addition to TPC, GA,and PHBA, the OP also contains a high amount of other valuable components that contributed to itshighly biological activities. Moreover, the OP was nontoxic on HaCaT cells with a concentration of nomore than 1000 mg/mL. From the obtained results, PLE proved to be a suitable technique for the recoveryof bioactive compounds from P. palatiferum leaves.

Bacterial collagenolytic protease-extracted Bigeye tuna skin collagen was subjected to catalysts-assistedsubcritical water hydrolysis. The degree of hydrolysis was the highest for hydrolysates obtained usingsodium bicarbonate catalysts. The color and pH values of the hydrolysates varied depending of thecatalysts used. Four different assays of antioxidant activities varied with respect to the various collagenhydrolysates with hydrolysates obtained using sodium bicarbonate catalysts showing the highestactivity. Ten bacterial species were studied to evaluate antibacterial activity among which nine showedpositive results. The average molecular size of the peptides in the obtained collagen hydrolysates variedbetween 300 and 425 Da. The total amount of structural and total amino acids varied between 116.63 and49.51, and 196.86 and 265.68 mg/100 g hydrolysate, respectively. The collagen hydrolysates obtainedshowed enormous potential to be used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

The present study assesses hepatoprotective effects of raw oyster lyophilized powder (OP) and subcritical water treated oyster powder (SOP) on D-galactosamine (D-GalN)-induced toxicity and acute ethanol intoxication in mice. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed that four phenolic compounds and glucose were identified from the SOP. The levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and malondialdehyde were considerably lower for the oyster extracts and the levels of glutathione, γ-glutamylcysteinesynthetase, glutathione S-transferase, and glutathione reductase were higher in the D-GalN induced mice compared with those in the controls. Histology analysis suggested that SOP can protect against and heal the D-GalN toxified liver. For the acute ethanol intoxication study, the enzymatic activity of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and SOP’s alcohol dehydrogenase appeared better than that of OP. Overall, SOP may protect the liver from acute ethanol intoxication and D-GalN persuaded hepatitis.
