      • Activity Changes in the Nucleus of the Solitary Tract Following Taste Stimulation

        Cation-specific epithelial receptors on the tongue have been well demonstrated. However, active regions along the nucleus of the solitary tract (NST) for cations Na(+), K(+), NH4(+) remain unclear, although best responses of NST neurons to taste stimuli vary depending on cells. In the present study, spatial distribution patterns of cation-specific active regions in the NST are investigated. The tongues of urethane-anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 25) were stimulated with artificial saliva (control), 0.5 M NaCl, 1.0 M NaCl, 0.5 M KCl, and 0.3 M NH(4) Cl. Then, three-dimensional positions of c-Fos-likeimmunoreactive (cFLI) cells in the NST were generated. The spatial distributions of cFLI cells in the NST were compared among five taste stimulations. cFLI cells were observed throughout the NST, irrespective of the stimulus; however, the intermediate-medial central regions of the NST had higher numbers of cFLI cells than the other regions in all taste stimulations. Analysis of images revealed that the activated regions in the NST differed significantly depending on the cations. The intermediate-dorsal-central region and the caudal-ventral region were activated by a 0.5 M concentration of sodium, the rostral-ventral region and the intermediate-dorsal/ventral region were activated by a 1.0 M concentration of sodium, the intermediatedorsal/ ventral region was activated by potassium ions, and the rostral-ventral region and the intermediate-ventral central region were activated by ammonium ions. These results suggest that responses of NST cells to cation salt ions are regulated differentially.         Gaming Related Law and Legalization of Casino Gaming In Japan

        일본의 카지노 게이밍산업은 최근 세게 각 국의 합법화 추세에도 불구하고, 아직도 카지노 산업에 대해서는 후진국에 위치해 있다. 그러나, 21세기에 접어들면서 일본에서도 카지노산업에 대한 합법화 움직임이 활발히 전개되고 있다. 특히 장기간에 걸친 경제 불황을 타개하기 위해 구호에만 그치고 있는 중앙정부의 정책에 의존하기 보다는 지방정부와 지역주민이 하나가 되어 지역경제의 활성화를 위해 적극 유치를 추진하고 있다.<br/> 이에 본 논문에서는 일본에서의 카지노가 아직은 합법화되지는 않았지만, 앞으로 가까운 시기에 새로운 산업의 탄생을 확신하고, 그 합법화에 걸림돌이 되는 일본의 현행 갬블산업 및 법제도를 포함한 일반적인 문제점을 간단히 지적하면서 일본의 카지노 게이밍산업의 합법화 초기과정을 소개하고자 한다.<br/> 본문은 세 가지 부분으로 간단히 정리하여 보았다. 우선, 갬블산업정책을 둘러싼 일반적인 문제점으로서, 파칭코의 법률상의 정의이다. 일본에서의 합법적인 갬블 게이밍(gaming)은 경마, 경륜, 복권, 보트레이스 등으로 행정부의 지휘감독 하에서 관리 운영되고 있으나, 실제 일본의 갬블산업에서 빼놓을 수 없는 가장 보편적인 갬블산업의 파칭코(pachinko)산업임에도 불구하고, 형식적으로는 “풍속영업등의 규제 및 엄부의 적정화 등에 관한 법률에서 허가”된 유흥업으로 공공연히 존재하고 있다는 점을 지적하려고 한다. 두 번째로, 일본 내에서 새로운 산업이 될 카지노 게이밍(gaming)의 합법화를 위해 여러 지방자치체가 활발히 유치활동을 전개하고 있는 상황을 간단히 언급하려고 한다. 마지막으로, 앞에서 언급한 것과 같이 이미 초읽기에 들어간 일본에서의 카지노산업 합법화는 본 발표자가 깊이 관여되어 있으므로, 실질적으로 진행될 운영방향을 포함한 미래 플랜에 대해서 정책을 입안하는 실무자 입장의 견해를 밝히고자 한다.

        A high sensitivity HARP(High-gain Avalanche Rushing amorphous Photoconductor) image pickup tube using 4 μm thick amorphous Se photoconductive target was fabricated and its characteristics were investigated. When the target voltage was increased more than 360 V, the signal current increases rapidly and the dark current of the target was suppressed at 3.2 nA up to the voltage of 490 V. And the peak spectral response of the target was obtained at the wavelength of 460 nm. Also the amplitude response of the HARP tube was 7.5% at 800 TV lines, and the decay lag was 3.4%.

        Utility of Elastography with Endoscopic Ultrasonography Shear-Wave Measurement for Diagnosing Chronic Pancreatitis

        Background/Aims: Rosemont classification (RC) with endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is important for diagnosing chronic pancreatitis (CP) but is based only on subjective judgement. EUS shear wave measurement (EUS-SWM) is a precise modality based on objective judgment, but its usefulness has not been extensively studied yet. This study evaluated the utility of EUS-SWM for diagnosing CP and estimating CP severity by determining the presence of endocrine dysfunction along with diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: Between June 2018 and December 2018, 52 patients who underwent EUS and EUS-SWM were classified into two groups according to RC: non-CP (indeterminate CP and normal) and CP (consistent and suggestive of CP). The EUSSWM value by shear wave velocity was evaluated with a median value. The EUS-SWM value was compared with RC and the number of EUS features. The diagnostic accuracy and cutoff value of EUS-SWM for CP and DM and its sensitivity and specificity were calculated. Results: The EUS-SWM value significantly positively correlated with the RC and the number of EUS features. The EUS-SWM values that were consistent and suggestive of CP were significantly higher than that of normal. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve for the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-SWM for CP was 0.97. The cutoff value of 2.19 had 100% sensitivity and 94% specificity. For endocrine dysfunction in CP, the AUROC was 0.75. The cutoff value of 2.78 had 70% sensitivity and 56% specificity. Conclusions: EUS-SWM provides an objective assessment and can be an alternative diagnostic tool for diagnosing CP. EUS-SWM may also be useful for predicting the presence of endocrine dysfunction.

        Effects of Interface Hydrophilicity and Metallic Compounds on Water-Splitting Efficiency in Bipolar Membranes

        Bipolar membranes (BPMs) were prepared by using commercial ion exchange membranes and hydrophilic polymer as a binder to investigate the effects of the interface hydrophilicity on water-splitting capacity. In this study, polyHEMA/MPD cross-linked with TMC was used as a binding material to enhance the BPM interface hydrophilicity. The enhanced hydrophilicity of the BPM interface accelerated the water-splitting reaction because the hydrophilic polymer layer increases the water activity by attracting water from the ion exchange layers to the space charge region. In addition, a mechanism of the metal catalytic reaction was proposed. Metal species were immobilized in the BPM in a hydroxide form and possibly react with water molecules and the quaternary ammonium groups reversibly. It was also observed that metal species immobilized in the membrane improved the water-splitting efficiency by increment of the membrane wetness and enhancement of the membrane conductivity, with an apparent optimum metal concentration for the water-splitting reaction.

        Effect of duration from lingual nerve injury to undergoing microneurosurgery on improving sensory and taste functions: retrospective study

        Background: The prognosis of recovery following microneurosurgery for injured lingual nerves varies among individual cases. This study aimed to investigate if recovery ratios of sensory and taste functions are improved by the microneurosurgery within 6 months after lingual nerve injury. Methods: We retrospectively assessed 70 patients who underwent microneurosurgery at the Wakayama Medical University Hospital for lingual nerve injuries between July 2004 and December 2016. Sensory and taste functions in lingual nerves were preoperatively evaluated using a static two-point discrimination test, an intact superficial pain/tactile sensation test, and a taste discrimination test. They were evaluated again at 12 and at 24 months postoperatively. The abundance ratio of Schwann cells in the excised traumatic neuromas was analyzed with ImageJ software following immunohistochemistry with anti S-100β antibody. Results: In early cases (microneurosurgery within 6 months after the injury), recovery ratios of sensory and taste functions were not significantly different at 24 months after microneurosurgery compared with later cases (microneurosurgery more than 6 months after the injury). Meanwhile, the ratio of patients with taste recovery within 12 months after microneurosurgery was significantly decreased in late cases compared with early cases. The abundance ratio of Schwann cells in traumatic neuroma was also significantly lower in later cases. Conclusion: Microneurosurgery more than 6 months after lingual nerve injury did not lead to decreased recovery ratio of sensory and taste functions, but it did lead to prolonged recovery of taste. This delay may be associated with a decrease in the abundance ratio of Schwann cells in traumatic neuromas.

      • Plasticity-Related PKM <b><i>ζ</i></b> Signaling in the Insular Cortex Is Involved in the Modulation of Neuropathic Pain after Nerve Injury

        <P>The insular cortex (IC) is associated with important functions linked with pain and emotions. According to recent reports, neural plasticity in the brain including the IC can be induced by nerve injury and may contribute to chronic pain. Continuous active kinase, protein kinase M<I>ζ</I> (PKM<I>ζ</I>), has been known to maintain the long-term potentiation. This study was conducted to determine the role of PKM<I>ζ</I> in the IC, which may be involved in the modulation of neuropathic pain. Mechanical allodynia test and immunohistochemistry (IHC) of zif268, an activity-dependent transcription factor required for neuronal plasticity, were performed after nerve injury. After <I>ζ</I>-pseudosubstrate inhibitory peptide (ZIP, a selective inhibitor of PKM<I>ζ</I>) injection, mechanical allodynia test and immunoblotting of PKM<I>ζ</I>, phospho-PKM<I>ζ</I> (p-PKM<I>ζ</I>), and GluR1 and GluR2 were observed. IHC demonstrated that zif268 expression significantly increased in the IC after nerve injury. Mechanical allodynia was significantly decreased by ZIP microinjection into the IC. The analgesic effect lasted for 12 hours. Moreover, the levels of GluR1, GluR2, and p-PKM<I>ζ</I> were decreased after ZIP microinjection. These results suggest that peripheral nerve injury induces neural plasticity related to PKM<I>ζ</I> and that ZIP has potential applications for relieving chronic pain.</P>
