        RNA-Seq for Gene Expression Profiling of Human Necrotizing Enterocolitis: a Pilot Study

        <P>Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) characterized by inflammatory intestinal necrosis is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in newborns. Deep RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) has recently emerged as a powerful technology enabling better quantification of gene expression than microarrays with a lower background signal. A total of 10 transcriptomes from 5 pairs of NEC lesions and adjacent normal tissues obtained from preterm infants with NEC were analyzed. As a result, a total of 65 genes (57 down-regulated and 8 up-regulated) revealed significantly different expression levels in the NEC lesion compared to the adjacent normal region, based on a significance at fold change ≥ 1.5 and <I>P</I> ≤ 0.05. The most significant gene, <I>DPF3</I> (<I>P</I> < 0.001), has recently been reported to have differential expressions in colon segments. Our gene ontology analysis between NEC lesion and adjacent normal tissues showed that down-regulated genes were included in nervous system development with the most significance (<I>P</I> = 9.3 × 10<SUP>−7</SUP>; <I>P<SUB>corr</SUB></I> = 0.0003). In further pathway analysis using Pathway Express based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database, genes involved in thyroid cancer and axon guidance were predicted to be associated with different expression (<I>P<SUB>corr</SUB></I> = 0.008 and 0.020, respectively). Although further replications using a larger sample size and functional evaluations are needed, our results suggest that altered gene expression and the genes' involved functional pathways and categories may provide insight into NEC development and aid in future research.</P>

        Development of the Humanoid Disaster Response Platform DRC-HUBO+

        <P>This paper describes a humanoid robotics platform (DRC-HUBO+) developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Robotics Challenge (DRC) Finals. This paper also describes the design criteria, hardware, software framework, and experimental testing of the DRC-HUBO+ platform. The purpose of DRC-HUBO+ is to perform tasks by teleoperation in hazardous environments that are unsafe for humans, such as disaster zones. We identified specific design concepts for DRC-HUBO+ to achieve this goal. For a robot to be capable of performing human tasks, a human-like shape and size, autonomy, mobility, manipulability, and power are required, among other features. Furthermore, modularized joints and a user-friendly software framework were emphasized as design concepts to facilitate research on the robot tasks. The DRC-HUBO+ platform is based on DRC-HUBO-1 and HUBO-2. The torque of each joint is increased compared to that in DRC-HUBO-1 owing to its high reduction ratio and air-cooling system. DRC-HUBO+ is designed with an exoskeletal structure to provide it with sufficient stiffness relative to its mass. All wires are enclosed within the robot body using a hollow shaft and covers to protect the wires from external shock. Regarding the vision system, active cognition of the environment can be realized using a light-detection and ranging sensor and vision cameras on the head. To achieve stable mobility, the robot can transition from the bipedal walking mode to the wheel mode using wheels located on both knees. DRC-HUBO+ has 32 degrees of freedom (DOFs), including seven DOFs for each arm and six DOFs for each leg, and a solid and light body with a height of 170 cm and a mass of 80 kg. A software framework referred to as PODO, with a Linux kernel and the Xenomai patch, is used in DRC-HUBO+.</P>

        Investment Efficiency, CEO Turnover, and CEO Career Concerns

        [연구목적] CEO의 기업내에서 투자에 관한 결정은 투자자들의 부의 관점에 있어서 중요한 문제이다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 CEO의 투자결정과 경력에 대한 우려가 CEO의 교체에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석하였다. [연구방법] 본 연구는 1992년부터 2014년까지 미국 상장기업들을 대상으로 CEO의 경력에 대한 우려가 기업의 투자와 CEO의 교체에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. [연구결과] 실증 분석 결과, 예측치보다 낮은 수준의 투자를 하는 기업들의 경우 CEO 들이 다음연도에 해고될 가능성이 크게 나타났음을 발견하였다. 또한, 이러한 효과는 CEO의 노동시장에서의 경쟁이 심하거나 CEO의 능력이 낮을 때 더욱 강하게 나타남을 확인하였다. [연구의 시사점] 본 연구는 선행연구에서 밝혀지지 않은 CEO의 경력에 대한 우려가 기업의 CEO 교체결정에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대한 실증증거를 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. [Purpose] CEOs’ investment decisions are critical to firms because inefficient investment choices are detrimental to investor wealth. We provide a link between CEOs’ investment decisions and their career concerns by investigating firms’ CEO turnover. [Methodology] Using the measures of investment efficiency, we find that firms with under-investment are more likely to experience forced CEO turnover relative to peers with efficient investment. [Findings] We also find that our results are more pronounced for CEOs facing intense labor market competition and for CEOs with lower ability. [Implications] The results imply that CEOs facing severe career concerns more likely to deviate from the optimal investment levels, and the board of directors and shareholders do not fully react to the inefficient investments by CEOs.

        Photocatalytic degradation of procion blue dye in aqueous solution by a TiO2-carbon nano-composite.

        <P>A nano-composite consisting of TiO2-CNT was prepared via the sol-gel technique by using titanium n-butoxide along with carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) followed by calcination at 450 degrees C. Spectral analysis reveals that the TiO2 formed was present on the carbon in anatase form. The effect of adsorption was investigated in an aqueous solution of procion blue dye in a darkroom and the photochemical reaction in aqueous suspensions of titania composite under UV illumination. The reaction was studied by monitoring the discoloration of dye via employing a UV-Visible spectrophotometeric technique as a function of irradiation time. The composite catalyst was found to be efficient in the photodegradation of the dye.</P>

        Overexpression of Neuron-Specific Enolase as a Prognostic Factor in Patients with Gastric Cancer

        Purpose: Enolase is a cytoplasmic enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in the glycolytic pathway. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the overexpression of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) can serve as a prognostic factor in patients with gastric cancer (GC). Materials and Methods: To assess its prognostic value in GC, NSE expression was measured by immunohistochemistry in a clinically annotated tissue microarray comprising of 327 human GC specimens. Cytoplasmic NSE expression was scored from 0 to 4, reflecting the percentage of NSE-positive cells. Results: In terms of histology as per the World Health Organization criteria (P=0.34), there were no differences between the NSE overexpression (NSE-OE) and NSE underexpression (NSE-UE) groups. The NSE-OE group showed a significantly lower rate of advanced GC (P<0.01), lymph node metastasis (P=0.01), advanced stage group (P<0.01), cancer-related death (P<0.01), and cancer recurrence (P<0.01). Additionally, a Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that the NSE-OE group had longer cumulative survival times than the NSE-UE group (log-rank test, P<0.01). However, there were no significant differences in the serum levels of NSE expression in patients with GC and healthy volunteers (P=0.28). Conclusions: Patients with NSE overexpressing GC tissues showed better prognostic results, implying that NSE could be a candidate biomarker of GC.

        우리말 사업보고서 가독성 연구의 가능성에 대한 탐색적 연구

        본 연구에서는 영문 기반의 사업보고서의 가독성을 측정한 기존 연구의 결과가 우리말 사업보고서에도 확장가능한지 가늠해보기로 한다. Li(2008)의 연구 이후, 회계와 재무분야의 많은 연구에서 사업보고서의 가독성을 비롯한 기업공시의 언어적 특성(linguistic features)에 대한 연구가 폭넓게 이루어졌으나, 상이한 전자공시체계로 인한 분석의 용이성 차이 때문에 국내에서는 이와 관련된 연구가 미비한 상황이다. 본 연구는 Li(2008)의 방법론을 차용하여 국내 상장기업들을 대상으로 우리말 사업보고서의 가독성을 측정하고, 이익특성 변수들 간의 관계를 확인하고자 하였다. 주요 분석결과에 따르면, 상대적으로 낮은 이익을 보고하는 기업의 경우 사업보고서의 가독성이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 사업보고서의 가독성이 낮은 기업의 경우, 이익의 지속성 역시 떨어진다는 점을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 이익조정 유인이 큰 기업들의 사업보고서의 가독성이 떨어진다는 점을 확인하였다. 이는 영문 기반의 사업보고서 가독성을 분석한 Li(2008)의 연구 및 후속 연구들의 결과가 우리말 기반의 사업보고서에서도 동일하게 적용될 수 있는 가능성을 시사한다. 본 연구는 우리말 사업보고서의 가독성과 관련된 텍스트 분석의 확장 가능성을 체계적으로 제시하였다는 점에서 의미가 있다. This paper assesses feasibility of annual report readability research in Korea. Using three different readability measures commonly used in accounting and finance literature (e.g., Flesch ease index, Fog index, and the length of annual report), we find that firms with lower earnings make their annual reports more complex and thus less readable. Additionally, we find that firms with less readable annual reports have less persistent positive earnings. We also present evidence consistent with prior studies that annual reports are less readable for firms just meeting or beating earnings benchmarks. Furthermore, the relation between annual report readability and corporate earnings is attenuated after IFRS adoption. Lastly, to check the validity of annual report readability measures estimated by using the Korean alphabets, we re-estimate our main analyses using alternative annual report readability measures (e.g., alternative Fog indices, average sentence length, and file size of annual reports); these results are robust to the alternative readability measures. In sum, we provide first large sample evidence of how annual report readability is related to attributes of corporate earnings in Korea, thereby being suggestive of feasibility of annual report readability research in Korea.
